I will continue study physics. what I need now is little more details about programming.
You may not need a technical knowledge on programming. While it is good and very necessary, try to build yourself towards the project management side. This way, you head and manage developers. Having a knowledge of the working principles of the code is very necessary to adapt to the industry.

So whichever way you choose to. I work in the IT industry and I don't have any coding knowledge. Learn more of Java, python, html or you can be a front end web developer. Most developers are back end developers making the front end developers scarce. Currently, we are needing a frond end developer and no one to be found now.

Do your best bro but don't kill yourself with code grin grin

God bless you my brother. I will tell you something about what happened to me back then. I wanted to study elect/elect but I was given mathematics. When I asked some people about the course, they started laughing at me that I would end up becoming a primary school mathematics teacher. I was so discouraged. I talked to my dad (although he is late now) about it and he told me one thing; he said go and make extensive research about the course on your own and make the best out of it. I held on to that statement even up to this very moment. I did personal research and I saw alot of opportunities for mathematics graduates. I will mention a few; I.T industries, financial institutions (banks and insurance), academics, medicine, climate agencies, etc.

To cut the long story short, after making personal findings, I fell in love with academics especially research. How mathematics was used to study and understand complex phenomenon ranging from our biological world to our physical world. I studied hard and did excellently well. I got a scholarship to do my msc mathematics in Senegal 2 years ago and now I have a PhD mathematics scholarship in Germany.

Why did I bring up my story; for the OP to understand that anything you conceive in your heart now would go a long way. Whether in physics or civil engineering or anywhere you find yourself. I have some mathematics and physics friends who graduated and are now in the IT and engineering industries, some work in banks and insurance companies, some are in oil and gas sectors. I have worked with some in academics during the course of research. They are great guys even better than we mathematicians. They have wide range of knowledge in different areas of science and engineering.

OP, don't let anyone discourage you, not even me. You're the brain work, architect and engineer of anything you choose as a career. I will say this again, make the best out of anything you do.

Good luck.
Congrats bro and well done for the comment.

While studying physics, I didn't ever imagine teaching in secondary school and I don't see myself doing that.

i'm a graduate of Physics and im very proud of it because studying physics was my dream long before i entered the university.

i was talked down several times. i was asked what will i do with physics. i am one of those who dislike engineering.
who doesnt love oil companies and other multinationals. if an accountant can work there, an engineer can work there, then a physcist can also work there

i didnt go to school to get good grades. i went to understand Physics.

but first, when i got into school i discovered that physics like engineering had different options. then i sat down and located my strength and went down to business.

it was not an easy ride. i read every minute available to me ( not to pass exams). i came with above 4points at the end of the day.

as much as my life seem to depend on physics, i tried hands on other things. i didnt literature( today writing is my passive income). the only regret i have is i didnt learn a skill so im handicapped with head knowledge. i also did self tutor on computer( i get passive income from microsoft concepts).

on thing you should understand and i have come to know about physics.it is not how much equations and formulas you know( i have forgotten some). physics explains natural phenomenon physics make you analytic and creative. it makes you scientific in thinking.

of job.

is is true we have job challenges in the country. but however, you should understand like other courses, with physics you cam work anywhere and also be self employed.

there are no practical sections in the classroom but you take it extra miles to learn it outside. it is a plus to you.

another question you need to ask yourself is what do you want from life. do you want to be become
an entreprenure, a lecturer, researcher or on a paid employment? then study your physics and channel your energy toward it.

goodluck

preferrable yes, But as technology is getting more and more advanced you can your an android smartphone or tablet. And as to where you should start. I think you should go with web programming(html, css, javascript et.c) its more easier and popular infact it is more needed than the c, c++, java, e.t.c. but i dont know your taste is it web programing or just programming
programming.

You need a system preferably a laptop or desktop.

Even your phone can be a platform for coding if you really want it to.

I always say there is no excuse for any young Nigerian today. Information is at your finger tip.

You can collaborate with people around the world.

There are various repositories for all subject matter and most of them are free.
any app or web for a startup.

Good morning.
My name is Adeshina Waliyu, a 100 level student(lautech ogbomosho). There is a matter I have been worrying about, due to fear, I have fall in love with my phone searching for info about the issue. And nairaland is one of the site that I always tend to, to know about what I don't know because I believe there are many talented people and experienced people that can put me through.

I have read many topics on this nairaland that relate to the issue that's bothering me yet I still feel like I haven't see what I need. May be it's because most of the topic I read were posted like 4 to 5 years ago, sorry to say I feel like Nigeria then is different from today's Nigeria.

The issue that is bothering me, that makes me need the counsel or advice of people is about the course I was given.
I's a pre degree student 2015/2016, I chose Civil Engineering but unfortunately I scored 255 in Pre degree and 245 in jamb, so I was given Pure and Applied Physics.
Though at that time I was discouraged but later I got over it (Since physics is my best subject). Then I decided to study physics but getting to 100 level, what am hearing from people around me and my brothers is that I should change my course.. What they are telling me is that physics is among the best course in the world
but not here in Nigeria. They said it's better to cross to Engineering.
Though am just a 19 year old boy but I think it's better to start thinking about my future......
So I have been in a dilemma since because my decision will have Great impact to my future.
I can't make a rash decision. That's why I decided to hear from people that will tell me what I don't know.
Please is it true that the hope for science student especially physics graduates in time of job in this Nigeria is not much . I know life is unpredictable and we should follow our instinct. But it is better to know more.
I will be very grateful if you can spare some of your time to give your opinion..
Baba...calm down jare.

Kindly go through this thread...I was encouraged by the comments there years ago and I believe it is still relevant today:

Listen, I am not hear to boast or whatsover. I finished an got a work as physics graduate 3 months after NYSC. I work and even earn more than an entry level Medicine and surgery graduate. I got my job without knowing anyone.

There's this one thing about a physics graduate which you guys fails to understand. Physics graduates are highly analytical and logical. This skill alone can get them any way and they are highly sought for especially in IT industry where I work.

My problem is that most unemployed people are those shouting Physics Teachers up and down on nairaland
I'm not condemning physics as a course, I was just condemning that post. The Op is obviously looking for advice, especially from those who are degree holders in physics, but that comment did not even proffer one advice except that it is best course in Nigeria.

Exactly. The point is that most graduates or youths have a skewed view of the real world out there. They only know about engineering, law, medicine, and pharmacy jobs.

Like you rightly said, a project manager in a pharmaceutical firm will earn more than a pharmacist in that firm. So if a physicist sees himself as a teacher, then such person will end up earning 30-50k and end up average in the society.

Nigerian's are not crying due to high rate of unemployed physics graduate but unemployed graduates across all disciplines.
Say what you know please. Project manager will earn more than a pharmacist in a pharmaceutical firm owned by a Pharmacisthuh
Unless you are comparing a project manager who has risen through the ranks to become a manager and a newly employed entry level Pharmacist. The difference won't be much even at that, besides the Pharmacist could have his community pharmacy or use his license to earn from other sources than the company where he works.

Or let Mama catch you for project

Those that passed through physics dept has story to tell with some ppl's CGPA no fit flash mtn to airtel
Lol. You know my school very well. Lautech doesn’t reward hard labor and brilliance. Them fit still frustrate person despite his ingenuity.

My advice for op, struggle to have at least second class upper, pass test of English exam like TOEFL before you graduate and keep searching for foreign scholarship online. For scholarships, you will need toefl and international passport.

Also, if you graduate with high CGPA, companies like banks will still be after you. As a scientist, obtain programming skills too.

Don't make my mistakes. Before going to Lautech, I had received calling into pastoral ministry. So, my aim was just to obtain a degree. I graduated with 2:2. After graduation, I felt I don't want to become a pastor, and I started job hunting. Even private schools rejected me. I'm very good in Physics and Maths but schools say my certificate is not related to education. Poor schools are offering me 15k salary - over my dead body! I have this pastoral gift and God is still talking to me about it. I left my initial church because I felt their doctrines and how the church is run looks like a business enterprise. In my new church, to become a pastor, I must go for Masters in Theology, and I don't have money again. I didn't even have parents while in Lautech. Wellwishers paid my fees. Which Wellwisher will i approach for Masters in theology? That's my fate. A very hopeless situation.

And you think the project manager won't have another side hustles? How much is an entry level pharmacist paid?

Do you know that an entry level web developer earns more than a pharmacist? With many side hustles? I have a pharmacist at home so I am not making a blind argument here.

TheEminentLaity said everything that I would have said in different words. As it turns out, I have both an engineering and physics background, so I can provide an objective assessment of both.

It is true that engineering equips you with the skills to become factory/industry oriented, so if that's all you want in life, then you can change courses to an engineering degree, stop reading here, and be confident that you've made the right choice. That's it!!

BUT!

Why limit yourself so much? Physics is a portal to limitless potential. You lack ambition if Nigeria is all you're thinking about. In every single developed country, physicists are among the most respected individuals, both in industry and academia. With a good physics degree and demonstrated academic excellence, many international institutions will be willing to sponsor you to a full scholarship to pursue your post-grad degree(s).
Also, as long as we live in a physical world, you will be equipped with the knowledge to innovate, having acquired an understanding of the working principles of the physical universe.

The world is vastly bigger than Nigeria. That Nigeria doesn't appreciate physics degrees doesn't mean you will not find places in the world where your knowledge will prove useful. Dream BIG and don't be so pessimistic about your potential.

Whatever you choose, spare some time to learn programming too! Needless to say, computers are now an indispensable part of human existence, so knowing how to code will automatically give you a competitive edge over those without such knowledge; and in a very useful way.

Good luck!

With physics you must have a focus in terms of your specialisation and its economic importance.

Those graduates that are caught out never looked ahead whilst they were undergraduates.

Physics usually would encompass - electronics, geophysics, astronomy, meteorology etc.
You must know your specialisation inside out.

In the modern world, regardless of your interests, you must take programming and scripting as additional skills - C++, Java, Python, BASH, MATLAB etc.
E.g. C++, BASH and MATLAB.

You cannot escape it. The earlier you start the better for you.

No food for lazy man and you must obsess over your future.

You would lose friends along the way. You would lose them when you are pauperized in any case.

Be focused.

Don't let anybody tell you otherwise.
Gbam......A physics graduate has more hope than Electrical, Computer and Electronics Engineering graduates combined in this modern world!!!
In a class of 45 that I graduated with, more than 25 are Bankers and Investment Bankers today. Others are Lecturers in Federal Universities around the country, few are Researchers with Multinational and Foreign NGOs as Data Miners and Analyst.
I, myself being a practical Physicists, delve into Electronic circuit Design, Robotics, Automation, Process Control and Internet of Things.
Bros, Physics is Life and Life is Physics.

Don't let anyone puts you into confusion.

So many people here and in the society at large will tell you that physicist will become a teacher.

It is not always true. Destiny differs. And peoples aspirations differ.

While it is true that secondary school will attract some physicists especially those with BSc, a good number are also likely to work in different sectors of the economy such as telecommunications and ICT, banking, civil service, etc.

As a physicist, if you find yourself working in radiation centre and possibly consulting like one of my friends, I can assure you that most engineers won't see your back financially.

The guy in question makes a min of #3m monthly on the average and has travelled to almost 36 states of the federation using flight as a result of physics.

He's in his early 30s and has three standard buildings at Eko. He has five cars of which the least is about #2m and a loving and caring family.

No course is a ride off.

Your situation is not hopeless. Before I come to that, let me debunk a statement that you made, "Lautech doesn't reward hard labor and brilliance". This is not true.

I know of a friend who graduated with First Class in Agric Econs from Lautech. Enrolled for MSc in Econs at Ui and graduated with MPhil/PhD grade (55-59%). Got admitted into MPhil/PhD in Econs, Ui. While on the programme, he secured a job at one of the federal agencies at Abuja where salary is not disclosed to the general public but I can assure you that take home is not less than #400k (salary and allowances) per month with his MSc. This made him abandon the programme.

One can graduate with 2.1 and is unemployed for years. I have seen a good number of them, 4.0 above on 5.0 scale who have stayed ten years beyond after graduation while those with 2.2 secured jobs; some of them in commercial banks. Second Class (Upper Division) is fine. However it is a necessary but not sufficient condition to be employed in Nigerian economy. The sufficient condition is GRACE.

GRACE can lift a Third Class to a multinational company. I have seen some of my class mates and school mates working in oil and gas companies with Third Class and are doing extremely well. It is called GRACE.

As for your situation being hopeless, I disagree with you. Your situation can only be hopeless if indeed you have truly have the calling from the one who created all things and you chose to turned it down. That's when you will find life difficult until you hearken to His call. If He has called you, don't let your case be like that of Jonah.

My dear,

Let me tell you a small short story. I was in your shoes when i was given admission to study Industrial Physics in FUTO. But I held on and graduated, now I realized that there is no aspect of engineering that i want to go into that seems difficult for me. I have worked in a piping and mechanical engineering company, am currently working in a civil engineering company and trust me I dey perform very well. All thanks to my background, Physics.

Try and focus on your studies and don't fall for those saying that you won't use what you learn out there. I promise you, you will see a lot of application based on all the equations you learn in school. So hold on tight to what you have, cause believe it or not engineering students wish they have the broad knowledge that physics can give you.

Cheers.

I studied physics as first degree. Depends on your interest. You may work in a consultancy firm, bank, research institutes, engineering firms, investment banking firms etc. I and a lot of my classmates work in the above firm. I work in a government owned engineering firm in Canada. Some of my classmates work/ed for P&G, Pwc, GE, Huawei, Ericsson, Instructors at Universities etc Alot of my seniors work in oil and gas e.g mobil, E and H, schlum, some of my juniors work for hyundai heavy industry, Nigerdock, scholars in the US etc.

In my class, we were only 18 when we graduated out of about 88 students that started. About 5 changed changed to Engineering after 1st year, another 5 changed unis, about 10 changed to social sciences and the rest (88 - 20 - 18) dropped out. It's a tough course so you have to work hard and also try to grad with atleast 2.1.

To work as an engineer though, you would likely need a Masters in Engineering or another Bsc in Engineering.
If you grad with a strong 2.1, above 4 out of 5 cgpa, there is a good chance you would end up in the USA.

Your opportunities are limitless....you are not shackled by the chains of specialization.....what most companies look out for is Ur ability to analyse and think outside the box......the maths and physics will help with that.....most importantly, develop yourself in other areas such as public speaking (helps build confidence) take up leadership positions (helps improve problem solving and working with people), keep your grade 2.1 preferably at least a 4 in a 5 point CGPA system (might come in handy for scholarships) and align with the computer age (hone your software skills...you can start with Excel)

And as for where you can work.....oil companies, consulting firms, manufacturing companies, teach, research institutes and privately

Go for web development.

Learn Java and Python. Please do know that the programming language used in developing any website/portal depends on the functionality of that portal.

With my experience in the IT industry, I would recommend you ignore those css etc. and learn Java, Python, and PHP. These are programming language in high demand.

Don't mind anybody telling you that physics teacher or lecturer is what you will end up with. Your story looks similar to mine and I'm happy to tell you that I got my job with FAAN by the virtue of my course which is Physics. Just aim to finish with the best grade possible and the sky is your starting point.
