REFORMS NOT DESIGNED TO WITCH HUNT WORKERS -Bayelsa Govt
...SAYS FIGHT AGAINST FRAUD MUST CONTINUE

The Bayelsa State Government has stressed that the implementation of the ongoing public sector reforms in the tertiary education sector of the state is not and should not been misconstrued as a witch hunt.

The Commissioner for Education, Hon. Jonathan Obuebite, said in a statement on Tuesday that the government would not backdown on the implementation of the reforms.

He Insisted that over-aged, unproductive workers would be removed from the system to create opportunities for a younger generation of qualified Bayelsans to make input into the development of the institutions.

He said that the the government was resolute in its determination to rid the state of the fraud syndicates who have deprived the State of billions of Naira that should have gone into development.

Obuebite said that reforms were designed to remove the cases of multiple employments, over-aged workers, certificate fraud and others which have foisted a burden of an over-bloated wage bill on the state.

According to the Commissioner, the ongoing exercise is being implemented to weed out unqualified and unproductive people for young and deserving Bayelsa youths to be employed.

Obuebite said that it was the objective of the Restoration Government led by His Excellency, Governor Seriake Dickson to ensure that Bayelsa was ranked among the best when it comes to the issue of the organization of effective and well-organized tertiary education system.

He explained that the government was not directly involved in the issue of the workers in the tertiary institutions as the workers were not government employees.

However, Obuebite said that the government was in support of the decision of the councils and the school’s management as they were in the interest of the schools and indeed the society.

He said that government had taken steps to cushion the effect of those retired by the management of the Niger Delta University by approving and releasing three months salaries for them.

He said, “With the ongoing reforms, the State government can now channel funds to provide infrastructure in all the institutions rather spend it on salaries alone.”

Obuebite commended the management of the NDU for supporting the efforts of the government to prevent fraud and wastage and the establishment of a well-structured system in the university.

He said that the current measures were designed to ensure that the tertiary institutions had a functional and effective system.

Your school management said there is no increase in school fees. You people are allowing these politicians to use you all and send you people out of school. You people should hold your management responsible for the problems in NDU. I am a pioneer student of that school and I can tell you for free that Dickson is the only person that has shown interest in the development of that school asides from the founder of of it, who is the late DSP Alamieyeseigha. I remember when we had some issues almost like this and other developmental requests and of water, when we striked and the den governor who happened to be late Alams, he said, and I quote him"Education is not for the poor" ask any pioneer student from 01 to 03 knows very well about this statement. Asides from those ETF Interventions building and the ones they inherited from the secondary school, then the lecture theatre, no other building was done by any government or even the school. NDU never had auditorium and a senate building, Governor Dickson is doing that, NDU has over bloated salary wage bill, 89 and 98 years old still in active service, why? Now the villagers have been paid to come out and put up a show of shame.Sylva was the first to tell the NDU management to run autonomous.

am a student of NDU. we protested last month nd we are to b punished soon, imagine student paying 200k for school fees aside acceptance fees nd other hidden fees

[A PATH FOR THE COURAGEOUS ALONE

Sanitising a system is not a task for the lilly livered.

I have a catalogue of definitions of fraud especially by many who have embraced the noble duty of defending the seemingly defenceless, and my inference is thus;
People will naturally cover and protect their relatives and close friends even if it means promoting an irregularity.

However, in as much as it is human to deliberately overlook and cover acts of fraud to protect our close relatives and friends, does humanity alone justify this?
If I may ask, what is even the right thing to do?
- Is it to relieve the aged and pensionable relative of their duties or to constantly encourage them to falsify their credentials, plead extensively and in certain cases, blackmail those in authority all in a bid to be retained?
- When did the civil service employment become a traditional stool such that it is now inheritable as has been the custom in NDU?
- Is it true that many Bayelsans would prefer that the system is left in its state of continuous decay and degeneration, than to effect a positive change as long as they keep earning their monthly pay?

A parent never finds it comfortable subjecting a child with a dislocation to the seemingly harsh treatment of relocation. The options available are either you
- go through the temporary pain of adjustments now and enjoy bliss later or
- completely avoid the readjustment because you can't stand the temporary pain and rather live permanently with the deformity.

Which do you choose?
The right way is to go the path the Hon. Henry Seriake led Restoration Government has chosen. It will cause some pain but only temporary in nature so as to ensure a blissful future. Only the courageous can endure this considering the cloying sentiments involved.
Bayelsa can never become the Dubai of Africa if we continue to entertain these treacly sentiments. We would have only succeeded in fast forwarding the dooms day because it is indeed inevitable if deliberate steps are not taken now.
- And why not now?
- when would be more appropriate?
- who stands to benefit in the long run?
The reformation will ensure there is a
1. Structural reorganisation
2. Professional reorganisation; and
3. Enforcement of accountability.quote author=Emmalex45 post=67557166]THIS GOVERNOR MUST BE A WICKED TYPE[/quote]
