GGU is an unranked school that was a red flag to the VO. maybe if you had applied to a better school you would have had a better chance of approval

Thanks for the observation,I never knew about this anyway. Now what are the chances of getting another admission and I20 and still making it this fall? I wouldn't want my sevis fee payment to expire

Visa denied. Lagos. Post 2. 6am
Interview lasted for about 6 to 7 minutes

Me: Good morning
VO: no answer, pass me your passport and I 20
Me: Gave her

VO: why did you choose this school?
Me: I chose GGU because GGU has this curriculum that suits my career goals in this sense that offer students this environmental law and justice clinic whereby students get to work under attorneys and other US agencies(names one agency) while they study gaining rich practical experience on environmental Law. Then secondly GGU offered me a merit scholarship of 18000 dollars ( She was just starring at me)

VO: which program are you going for?

Me: masters degree on environmental Law

VO: (Cuts in) LLM on environmental law so what will this degree do for you?

Me: This degree upon my return to Nigeria will score me a job as legal officer with Nigerian Federal Environmental Protection Agency, then secondly when you look at PORT Harcourt where I live, there's a lot of ongoing environmental pollution cases and most of these victims are masses who can't afford to pay a lawyer,so I intend to set up a service oriented NGO in ph where these victims could be offered free access to justice and I believe that a good knowledge of this course will go a long way in equipping me.

VO:How many schools did you apply to?

Me 3 schools

VO: what's your highest qualification?

Me: BL... Barrister at Law

VO: Are you married
Me: Sure am married

VO: Any children?

Me: Yes I have one child,a son

VO: who is paying the rest of the tuition:

Me: My elder sister(calls her name)

VO: why did you chose this sponsor?
Me: Because she's been the one paying my tuition since secondary, university and Law school, she's like a mother to me

VO: sorry I won't....(hands me a blue paper and my passport

Me: Thanks

Please the gurus in this house should help me look at this, add or subtract where applicable. I actually prepared well for my interview and my interest is a bit dampened which is not too good for me.
I have a virgin passport which I have had since January 2014.

I am looking at reapplying but don't know what to state as the reason for the previous denial/what has changed in my application. I wouldn't also mind a mock Please help a sister

And if am to reapply, please what's the appropriate thing to state as reason for my previous denial?

Your sevis fee is valid for a year from the date you paid.I'm not sure about getting admission for fall18 in your desired program bc most schools admission has passed its application deadline date for fall. You still have option to apply for spring with a better institution so your sevis fee would still be valid for spring 19

I need people with good university recommendations in the US.

Profile:
MSc grade: 4.64/5 (Automation Engineering, Finland)

BSc: 4.3*/5 (Different engineering discipline from top Nigerian university)

GRE: Q-158, V-155, A-4.0. (could've done better, but didn't have much time to prepare, may try to improve)

1 IEEE conference publication.

Looking to secure a PhD admission in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering cool.

I applied to 5 universities for Fall 2018 start but got bounced by all, except NYU that requested me to defer in order to provide IELTS/TOEFL for 2019 admission. Cornell rejected because I couldn't get IELTS waiver.

I guess I'm having a though time because I'm switching field to pursue what I really desire, but I know there are some good (ranked) universities that would be good fit for me. People who have sure university information should please share with me so that I can research them on my own.

Thank you.

EDITED:
US Schools applied to MIT, Stanford, Cornell, NYU, and University of Cincinnati.

Canadian Universities: U of Toronto(application incomplete because of NASU strike) and McGill.

Did you read my post well? I applied to 5 different top schools and 4 already rejected before seeking people who know for sure (based on real US admission experience) schools that will admit. If you don't have anything to say, just pass. I check those sites more than you do.

Same school that denied you accepted many. Check what is wrong with your application. If its ietls or toefl that's holding you, get it done and apply again.

MIT, stanford are very tough to get into. Those i knew that got in had 330 to 338 in their GRE with strong CGPA. Try lower top schools.
Re: General U.s.a (student) Visa Enquiries-part 13 by Quoran: 11:18am On May 16, 2018
I don't think you are having a tough time because you're switching fields. For a PhD, if you're not a good fit for their research, schools won't offer you admission. If you're going for Internal combustion engines, Computational Fluid Dynamics, biofuels etc, you have to look for schools who have faculty members doing you chosen research area. PhD admission is all about 'best fit'. If you're not a good fit for the department , you will struggle and most departments and faculty members want to avoid these.

Please, retake the GRE and improve your Quant score. There's a possibility that some of the departments you applied to probably didn't even look at your application.Though the GRE is just one of the application materials, most schools nowadays use it to filter applicants.

Though you have to do most of the research yourself, if you specify your research area and Interest, I can help you with a list of schools. Also, when searching, do not search in broad terms. Check individual faculty members pages. Cheers.

Thanks so much,it was still in search of spring admission that landed me into choosing this school Most schools that offer LLM on environmental law run on fall terms,I rarely see spring. I was supposed to go on spring this year but couldn't get a date for visa appointment last year November

You need a complete application package for those caliber of schools and you should have written TEOFL/IELTS instead of asking for waivers. Please write it and accept the offer from NYU for Spring. You can try to apply to other schools too but the competitiveness means you have no assurance of securing an offer. A bird in hand is worth.............

Thank you for your response. I think Arizona is a very good university. I overlooked some schools because I did not have enough time to write IELTS and I was very sure I'll get admitted to at least one of the university I applied, but now I'm really hungry for admission to a very good/ decent university and I will have to write IELTS next month or so. I definitely will be looking to get TA/GA/Scholarships.

You're right. Even NYU has not made an offer, they only requested that I defer my submitted application for Spring '19 review. Later they sent a message that they won't be admitting new PhD students until Fall '19. I don't have the luxury of time to wait for a whole year again, that's why I am seriously searching for school for Spring '19 start. Thank you.

I'm considering Dynamics and Control as my primary research concentration, I don't mind Propulsion as a second option. I know my GRE score was not as expected, but there was no time to really prepare for a retake to meet Fall '18 admission. I will retake it and write IELTS too.

I knew I was really ambitious, but I already submitted most of the applications before squeezing out time from work to write GRE. I will take GRE again, but honestly I prefer IELTS (7.5 or 8 overall in 2014) to TOEFL, although I haven't sat for TOEFL before but I don't really like its structure. I may consider taking it now, it's cheaper here and I think I want to really create time and prepare for it. Thank you.

First, you don't have to retake the GRE if you dont have the luxury of time and money. You seem to have good GPAs to make up for your not so high Gre score. Phd admission is not all above GRE score, research fit, research experience, Gpa , advisors lor and Sop matter alot. Just to motivate you, I know someone who got in VT phd Civil engineering with a GRE score of 307 but other aspects were stellar. Just to put it in perspective, VT is ranked 7 with MIT and Mich, ann arbor in civil ranking. Once you meet the gre cutoff of each school, you should be fine. However if you have time and money you can retake the Gre. Secondly, ditch that plan of writing ieslt and not toefl if you have not paid. Toefl is more recognized in the US and its easier. Most schools might not take ieslt from you, so dont limit yourself. Thirdly, I know you don't want to hear this but plan for fall 2019, more opportunities are available in Fall than spring because fall is the main admision season and many students graduate in Spring. No one can recommend schools for you, you need to put in some work yourself by researching for schools and you can come here to ask for opinions about the school if anyone has any first hand info or not. Here is a link to engineering schools ranking by US news https://drive.google.com/open?id=0BwKmQy59LeEpUW5tbEZhRHJmR1U Go to mechanical engineering tab and check each school website to see which of them you would like to attend based on your criteria. Spread your risk well but make sure you shortlist tier 1 schools
