gregyboy:Where exactly do you live? Have you ever taken time to visit Dahomey Museum? Are you really read? You amaze me with these your views. Is this how you reason? Obviously, you and your likes are amongst the Edos ,whose views ridicule archeology and oral historical account. Before you can comment on Dahomey, you need visit the place and see,how Yoruba had influenced, their tradition, despite the fact that Yorubas aren't the majority, among the ethnic groups in Bénin Republic. This is the power God has given to Yorubas to dominate any environment the settledown .Honestly, stop quoting me because, you have not given out anything as fact or reference to back up your opinion. At least, if Edo did anything in Dahomey country, there must be a footprint of their tradition and language influence ,either written books by Western historians or Dahomey descendants. Kindly cite some books written by Edo Authors, researchers or stop commenting because you are wasting your time.... ![]() |

They would just go to oyo with what means of transport tell me please ,their little pony can't withstand the rigor of the journey is too far from the coast oyo were trading with the Portuguese in the coastal area badagry and Cotonou popo kingdom .some explorer did make it to oyo though and gave account of it ..beautiful city with fortified earthen wall fortress and also his multi internation market which is located at a strategic trade root for easy commerce the market had a great influx of traders from far and wide region of the savanna . visited by neighboring empires traders, Arabs Hausa Fulani as far Sudanese . How many northern empire was visited by the white explorer before the coming of the brits to colonize us ""kanem bornu kano "" , northern empires which are more advance than little primitive kingdom of the south

The city engaged extensively in trade and became wealthy. It was known for its powerful cavalry. The capital city was Oyo-Ile, also sometimes called Katunga or Old Oyo. The palace of the ruler (oba) was the most important building. The large market was the heart of the city. There was a tall wall made of earth around the city for defense. The Oyo traded with the Portuguese for guns and horses. Their cavalry and guns enabled them to dominate the region between 1700 and 1900. Civil war and divide and conquer strategies of the Europeans eventually brought about the decline of the Oyo.

Moneywomen17:Ok....did it say conqured ...no it didnt fellow yorubas like will say its conquering ...this was simply migration the oyo king took advantage of the people and added them to it territory ...these were d same group of people who ran from war and slave raid to seek comfort in Dahomey ur king took advantage of them as well as history is concerned oyo only colonized his brothers ... Its strength still lies within a kingdom |

gregyboy:- This argument is so unnecessary. Conquering and colonizing are not exclusive. To colonize a people, you must conquer them directly or indirectly. Maybe the word you are looking for is assimilation. - I am very familiar with Oyo and Dahomey's history. Dahomey was conquered sometime in the 1740s during the Oyo-Dahomey wars, which is when it became a vassal state. The Dahomey wouldn't be completely free for almost a century in 1823 when king Ghezo defeated Oyo under the aid of a well-known Portuguese Brazilian slave trader known as Francisco de Souza. Much of this history is actually recorded by the Europeans who had vested interest in the area. They even recorded the fall of the kingdom of Whydah in 1727 to Dahomey's forces some years prior to the defeat by Oyo. The kingdom of Whydah was important to them because it was a major supplier of slaves. -I don't know what exactly you mean by the bolded. Ketu did not seek comfort in Dahomey. Ketu was Oyo's ally, which makes Ketu a sworn enemy of Dahomey. Ketu and Dahomey were like oil and water, so none seek refuge in the other. The two were in constant warfare. Ketu was a vassal state just like Porto-Novo. Both kingdoms maintained a degree of autonomy, but were still vassal kingdoms to the Oyos. Their manpower were utilized in Oyo's imperial army. |

gregyboy:European traded with the coastal tribes not with the north the more superior northern tribes ...The acquisition of firing arms and white explorers support led to first Dahomey revolt under oyo empire, their firing arms was very effective in scaring the horses but they were crushed my technical and more trained oyo foot soldiers they were crushed and defeated by the oyo sword men |

Why would this tribal forest pygmies think Yoruba are cowards when we fought the most wars than any tribe in Nigeria i want to know the yard stick being used for this stereotype to think we are .cowards .This a joke and far from the truth , being civilized and i have undergone series internal wars that made us to cherish humanity and learn to coexist with our neighbors shouldn't be misconstrue as act of weakness ..we are urbanize people we've reached a level of empire and state read books written by explorers that managed to get into Yoruba hinterland,we had more cities that the whole Europe in combined we were city builders.. lot people lives among us for centuries .oyo empire have hausa bariba Nupes and other tribes in their imperial army which rose to the level of generals much like Roman empire, the first oyo empire general lisimo ""Are ona kankanfo was from portnovo ...Yoruba is a spirit not bound by language or ethnic bigotry ....Benin claim to be strong yet you were defeated and your chiefs were hung like dogs in your own land abomination no Yoruba oba or king would allow himself to be put in to such embarrassment he would rather commit suicide or die fighting ..your king was chained alike slave and jail in calabar. No yoruba king would allow himself to live to witness such inhumane and degrading situation "iku ya ju esin lo, .Yoruba king would kill himself..king must fight till death a general most fight till death that's yoruba .....1966 coup akintola was the only premier that fought till death taking lot of soldiers lives with him and wounded alot in the assault he knew they were coming for him he would have ran away but is unlike Yoruba man,,his not a bastard he is a yoruba with obvious tribal mark omo akin oo gbo'do she ojo... he armed himself and fought ganlanttly till death ... .Counter coup..when ironsi was running with tail between his legs to, Adekunle Fajuyi house for protection when the junior officers came to kill ironsi , Adekunle Fajuyi didn't allow them to do it he insisted they have to kill him first to kill ironsi he gave his life according to military ethics no Benin or Ibo man fit do that for their fellow tribe's man not to talk of a Yoruba man.when abacha was killing everybody threaten to kill obasanjo... obasanjo was out of country he was warned globally not to come back to Nigeria that he would be killed he came home to face the death ...that is a true Yoruba man for you |
