The Dahomey wouldn't be completely free for almost a century in 1823 when king Ghezo defeated Oyo under the aid of a well-known Portuguese Brazilian slave trader known as Francisco de Souza. Much of this history is actually recorded by the Europeans who had vested interest in the area. They even recorded the fall of the kingdom of Whydah in 1727 to Dahomey's forces some years prior to the defeat by Oyo. The kingdom of Whydah was important to them because it was a major supplier of slaves.
