IMHO, I think they have different certifications for either private or commercial pilots like BBN's Miracle, he is a private pilot but wants to be certified as a commercial pilot too.
As a private pilot, you can pilot gliders, biplanes and other smaller planes but as a commercial pilot, you make your home in Boeings.
Just like cars; your being able to drive a car doesn't mean you can drive articulated vehicles too (trailers and tankers), you need special training/license.
