dear friends,
i recently purchased a 2000 landcruiser from a friend and soon after i noticed that when im in traffic for about 10 minutes the abs and vsc and traction control lights come on with an alarm. this lasts for about 20 seconds and stop when the traffic moves.
if the traffic is really bad then the alarm and light become permanent and the brake pedal becomes stiff and the brakes dont respond again. until i get a mechanic to bleed the brakes or disconnect and reconnect the abs from the battery.
i also noticed that when driving normaly there is a hiss like air escaping when i step on the brakes.
i have done some research on the net and i discovered that it is a common problem with the 00-04 landcruiser, 03/04 4runner limited, tundra, sequoia and some lexus lx470 and gx470 as they share the same brake system.
i have consulted some good mechanics who have concluded that the abs is bad and some advised me to change it to the older and simpler landcruiser brake system which uses a salvo instead of the abs brake pump.
changing the abs is very expensive (abt 350k) and will not guarantee a permanent solution.
please has anyone experienced this and if so how did you sort it out.
i want to change the brake system only as a last resort.

From your story your mechanics could be very correct. But run a scan on your Abs system. Conversion from ABS to servo. grin kazeems don come again. If you check your ride well. Only the Abs system was built in there. A servo alone would not work perfectly well with that ride considering the body weight of the car. Any one who advises you to convert to servo is an enemy. Run a scan first and post fault errors here. If you are in lagos and you need help. Call 08156087872 or 08165520837. Bb pin is 7BE1C522

Iv replaced the abs unit (toks) for more recent toyotas and it was not 350k, so far no issues.

Call 080232512039 if you are interested in a tokumbor unit.

older models use servo and the weight difference is not much. i really want a permanent solution to this headache.
actually the difference is that the abs uses a pump to distribute the brake oil and this pump works once u step on the brakes until there is full pressure while the servo uses pressure applied on the pedals with a booster (servo) to distribute the oil.
the abs system of my model is complicated that mere corrosion of the abs terminals can cause complications which might make one change the whole abs.
also i strongly suspect that the master cylinder of my abs has a faulty seal (considering what i read on forms like ih8mud.com and also the hissing sound when i step on the brake pedal).
hence i will love to have a brake expert examine my master cylinder very well and see if there is a bad seal which can be replaced instead of changing the whole unit.
a member of ih8mud .com changed his whole abs unit before he discovered that his terminals were corroded and when he cleaned them the unit worked fine.
anothe user also wrote that stiff and unresponsive brake pedal is a result of a faulty master cylinder while a collapsed brake pedal is due to a failed brake pump.

Finding it difficult to locate your servo. Perhaps the way you snapped the pix. Definitely you should have your Abs light on. Run a scan first

It's 3 in one. You are looking at abs unit, servo and master.

Truth is most of the dirt came from the a/c pipes when i flushed them.
the previous owner had changed the abs about 3 to 4 months ago. which really gives me doubts about getting into the same quicksand.
i considered changing to the older servo system because i rarely speed very much so im not bothered about slamming on the brakes at 180km/h.
asides the abs issue i have absolutely no issues with the truck. the engine purrs smoothly and surprisingly fuel economy is comparable to that of a v6.

I did a search and stumbled on your post. I am in a similar problem with my brake system on Lexus Gx470. How did you solve your problem? Did you carry out the conversion?
Re: Toyota Suv Brake Issues by sultaan(m): 1:23am On May 22, 2018
Old post, but that break fluid needs to be replaced. So of your fluid is dark, flush it it should be almost colorless

I know it is old post but I wanted him to confirm if he carried out the conversion and the outcome. My lexus gx470 has ABS problem and cost of replacement is very steep. If a conversion can be done at a more cheaper price, I will gladly go for it.

Interesting. Seems OP may have moved on...hopefully he'll come here and say something.

Someone I know has a related? fault with a 2008 Land Cruiser V8 (2UZ FE engine). Maybe some more light can be thrown on it here.

Vehicle is not throwing up any diagnostic test codes. Brakes work normally. No leaks, sponginess or excessive pedal travel. The problem is that if the vehicle is on a steep incline (such as when trying to go over a large speed breaker/bump at speeds of about 1km/h to 5km/h) and you take your foot off the throttle or brake - the vehicle rolls back and the anti-slip (VSC/TRAC) warning light and buzzer come on. On the same incline, another Toyota SUV we tested for comparison simply rolled back slightly until the torque converter held that vehicle stationary - without any buzzer or VSC/TRAC warning light drama.

All mechanics who have checked the vehicle don't seem to know what to do, especially since there are no DTCs. Any ideas, any one?
Re: Toyota Suv Brake Issues by SmartToyota(m): 11:14am On May 23, 2018
This one would be quite difficult to know the issue since there are no trouble codes.

Yes. Most mechanics gave up when they couldn't get any DTCs. Those who had no interest in DTCs wanted to do the trial and error thing (i.e. keep changing parts blindly until we stumbled on a solution) and I had no time or patience for that.
Re: Toyota Suv Brake Issues by Nobody: 7:21pm On May 24, 2018
This must have been the malady that affected my MY02 4Runner that cause PO to swap out the ABS system for a standard one.

One of the first work I'll be doing on this rig in the future is bringing the ABS system back to stock.

The genuine Toyota ABS unit is not cheap and I have a running search on eBay for one.
Re: Toyota Suv Brake Issues by SmartToyota(m): 9:36pm On May 24, 2018
It would be a daunting task to keep changing parts just like & finding out the replaced isn't really the problem. You might want to consider selling off if its gonna give you headache

Thank you Autoelect.

We are not sure but I and others trying to troubleshoot this matter think we have unravelled the mystery. The vehicle has hill start assist so we suspect that is what is kicking in whenever the vehicle is allowed to roll back on a slope. The other Toyota vehicle we tested (but which did not trigger VSC/TRAC lights when rolling back on the slope) for comparison is a Toyota Sequoia (3 UR FE), US specification. The Land Cruiser is a GCC specification vehicle.

I'll do my best to get the VIN but that may take some time, unfortunately (vehicle is off site with owner at the moment). While troubleshooting the VSC/TRAC light matter we didn't know any one with a Land Cruiser so that we could compare like vehicles with like. If you do have access to a Land Cruiser of the same specification and model year I would be very interested in knowing if it behaves the same way.

Edit: Three weeks ago, the vehicle's front brake caliper (passenger's side) developed a leak (some obscure seal in the assembly) and mechanic advised replacing both front calipers. This was done promptly (with much financial pain) undecided. Apart from this no other work has been done recently. The vehicle also has some "driveline/drivetrain thump" which Land Cruisers are apparently notorious for but the owner is too tired to tackle that problem yet.

I don't have access to a similar vehicle.

Uncle, as promised.

I found the following:

1. A total of 4 Service Bulletins
2. 136 documents from the repair manual
3. 14 Electrical Wiring Diagrams
4. 1 New Car Feature Document
5. 3 Campaign Publications

The documents are so many and one has to download them individually, so I did not get past the Service Bulletins.

Until I get the VIN, I cannot determine which of these documents apply to your model, the above applies to every type of 2008 LandCruiser produced.

Yes. I removed the ABS completely and installed servo and master. It is working well and it cost me around #50,000. Parts sellers were quoting #500,000 for new ABS assembly and #350,000 for tokumbo and there is no guarantee it will still not go bad again. A member of Club Lexus forum has a writeup on step by step to take for the conversion including pictture's . My mechanic equally told me he has converted about 5 Lexus cars with ABS.
My mechanic will soon disable the ABS sign on the dashboard.
