Fighting imperialism, racism and neo colonialism is not an easy task in the world of today. Even after gaining independence, most African countries are still covertly ruled by the West. The same goes to their Prizes and Awards. What most of us that revere Nobel Prize don't know is that the 'Nobel' is a European prize and NOT an African or a global prize. It shouldn't come to us as a surprise why Chinua Achebe who was no match to Wole Soyinka, failed to win the Nobel Prize. Achebe is a critic of European literature demeaning Africa while Soyinka is just a Euro-assimilist. The West tried to use the Nobel to promote Soyinka more than Achebe, but Achebe's works promoted and spoke for him. Don't misunderstand me: Uncle Wole is good, but Achebe is better! It was during Chinua Achebe's days in the university that he began to become critical of European literatures about Africa - contrary to what he read in high school days that made him have a dislike for Africa. https://etimes.com.ng/achebe-imperialism-and-politics-of-the-nobel-prize/ It's believed that one of the most scathing criticisms that denied him the Nobel Prize was his criticisms of the book: : 'Heart of Darkness' by Joseph Conrad. Conrad was a British writer who is revered as one of the greatest novelists to write in English Language. As a professor of English at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Achebe had in February 1975, presented a Chancellor's Lecture, titled: "An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad's "Heart of Darkness." Decrying the author, Joseph Conrad as a bloody racist, Achebe insisted that Conrad's famous novel dehumanizes Africans and renders her as "a metaphysical battlefield devoid of all recognizable humanity into which the wandering Europeans enters at his peril." At the lecture also, Achebe criticised a quote from Albert Schweitzer, a 1952 Nobel Peace laureate, which says: "The African is indeed my brother, but my junior brother." https://etimes.com.ng/achebe-imperialism-and-politics-of-the-nobel-prize/ The lecture caused a storm of controversy with many of his white colleagues being upset by his remarks. Some were surprised that Achebe would challenge a man honoured in the West for his "reverence for life," and recognised as a paragon of Western liberalism. In 1986, Soyinka was awarded a Nobel prize instead of a man that became the ONLY living author in "Every Man's Library" (by Alfred Knopf). The Amherst lecture was later published. And in 2011 The Guardian of London named it, "One of the 100 greatest non-fiction books ever written." https://etimes.com.ng/achebe-imperialism-and-politics-of-the-nobel-prize/ Written by Chike Nnamani, a writer and public affairs analyst, writes for promotion of negritude.

Anything igbos can't or/ haven't attain, the next thing is to discredit it. When Chimamanda Adichie won a global award no one complain of it being a western award. To the typical igbo the Pulitzer award is non racial because Adichie won it while the noble laureate is racial because it wasn't awarded to Achebe. Maybe you should also explain why Yorubas has won 14 Grammys and nominated severally while no igbos has won the Grammy. I guess Grammy is also racial or marginalizing igbos. Hate, Inferiority complex and Victim syndrome is the genetic makeup of an igbo man. show me an igbo man without this trait and I'll show you a bastaard. #spit. |

ariesbull:well said but I think the greatest damage these nonsense prizes do to us, are the standards they set for us ie wole Soyinka won a Nobel peace prize here but his equal in the west isn't even up to a class D writer. Even chimamanda that's so celebrated isn't up to a class D writer in the U.S. The real danger is the wole Soyinkas become the standard here and people start emulating them thus destroying our standards and ability to compete in the international stage. One now realises why the Asians rejected all western prizes. The west really destroying Africa. It irks when western journalists cone to Africa to hail nollywood, or do a documentary on a village boy trying to make a helicopter with assrbled motorcycle psrts that clearly will never fly and the dude feels intelligent. I wish ppl like me were more in Africa. The few that are awake. The rest are useless. |

PVision2020 Your points were salient, until your last paragraph Should it be safe for me to say rituals, skull-mining,ass-licking, betraying and vulturisation is the genetic trait of a Yoruba man.;and that show me a Yoruba man without these traits and I will show you a bastard? I will not say so,because I have lived with Yorubas for a long time, even though some of them have these traits mentioned above,a lot of them are good and are more interested in making the best out of life like any other human in Nigeria. We are talking about literature, you jump into Grammys,if we leave you now you will tell us to equate the amount of dead people between Yorubas and Igbos? You sound intelligent yet unwise,mischievous,hate-filled,bestial and dangerous....but let me believe it's the hangover from TGIF.. You are an example of the illiterate of the 21st century not been those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, relearn and unlearn. Now let me help you.... The writer wasn't tribal but stressed the antagonism associated with pan-africanism,with Eurocentrism as the ultimate beacon;as a factor....many other authors have followed Achebe in his quest for been artesunate to neo-colonialism even in our books. The likes of James Ngugi Wa'thiongo had joined Achebe's reasons.... But oh no,you do not want to learn, you come here and begin to call a tribe names....I respect humans,I am pro-life, I respect Nigerians. The man in bodija and oke-padi does not make Igbos his problem but what his family will survive on,same as the man in Aba and Onitsha, same as in Zaria and Kontagora. Please be wise, and lessen hate...so that years from now,you should have a good legacy to pass on the next generation. |

fergie001 Stop being economical with the truth, I'm too smart to be bamboozled by your hypocritical rants. Right from the second paragraph, the writer has made it obvious that the argument was based on the fact that Soyinka was given the Noble prize in literature and Achebe wasn't. So it's crystal clear that had Achebe been awarded the Noble Laureate , "Igbo Amaka" would have been the music and not the petty-pseudo-Pan-African gospel you guys have been preaching about the award. When Adichie won Pulitzer - Pulitzer wasn't racial. Emegwali won numerous international awards, but you won't hear the igbo preachers come up with their pan- African gospel about the awards rather they will all shout igbo amaka. Achebe himself was recognized all over world, but alas when it comes to igbos the world can't be racial and bias... lol. The same thing played out in the last headies award. The cry cry babies won't let us rest, " why won't headies "dash" at least one igbo award" they all cried, equating awards to the esusu traditional titles they dash to every Tom, dick and Harry in their enclaves. Not forgetting that they've won and dominated this same award and several indeginous art and sport awards for a very long time without any other tribe crying foul. Right from Zik to Ironsi to Ojukwu to Ekwueme to the lowest in the igbo caste system, this three things they've in common. HATE, INFERIORITY COMPLEX & VICTIM MENTALITY |

PVision2020:Why didn't you attack the writer? Do not be clever by half... Did he attack Yorubas? Perhaps he attacked Wole, You could have picked up your pen and attacked adichie,Achebe even ekwueme and the likes...... Who is now hating between your vitriols and the man's article.... You are saying they always complain...is it not within their exclusive rights to complain when their rights are impugned upon? Did the Yorubas not also complain during the Jonathan presidency of marginalisation? So what is your point? I believe you not to be like someone I know here... When Jonathan made a 'motorpark' reference to your elders which was in itself attrocious, you guys almost skinned him alive and rightly so.....then,look at yourself?a youth? Tomorrow's leader...a Yoruba friend of mine will say yinmu Don't wear your tribe on your head, those who are dead,do not mark tribes on their graves... You are as I said before, asinine to anything positive if you move on with this bestial and devil-may-care attitude... Attack adichie, even attack the writer but do not bunch him with his tribe because they are good and bad everywhere.... You wanted to derail and start the tribal-ish,but you scored an own goal because you already want to be part of the few who think with their nostrils and not their head..... You will complain when pushed to the wall, even northerners who have a large chunk of leadership also complain..... The writer might have been too sensational....but this brickbat between Achebe and Wole has been on for years... I have asked you again.. Would it be safe for me to say all Yorubas are vultures, into skull-mining,ritualists,prostitites,kidnappers and so on,and for you to show me one who is not,is to show a bastard..including you, your family? How does that sound?does that not sound derogatory? Does that not sound like speeches terrorists make before carrying out their actions? Please,go to the mirror, and take a good look at yourself again and observe the fallacy you oozed out here.... Learn to live in peace with all men,so that you will live long.... Attack the issues the writer made that you see as been uncomfortable with, and not bunching a tribe.....I am helping you,in your quiet time, you will discover how 'off' your statement made you look....I know you will not admit it here, but I know you know.... Be wise... |

What most of us that revere Nobel Prize don't know is that the 'Nobel' is a European prize and NOT an African or a global prize. It shouldn't come to us as a surprise why Chinua Achebe who was no match to Wole Soyinka, failed to win the Nobel Prize.Only Igbos who had to catch up with Yorubas merits everything they get, every other Nigerian tribe cheated the Igbos to get whatever they have. A professor Kenneth Dike did not cheat a more senior Professor Oladele Ajose, who was the first African Professor to be appointed and most senior African on the Academic Board of University of Ibadan, for Dike to have become appointed as School Principal by an Igbo School Council Chairman. One day true to the words of Achebe on Igbo catchup with the Yorubas that were ahead, an Igbo will be found worthy to be recognised like Wole Soyinka who became the first African ever and the first black man to be awarded the Nobel prize for literature over 30yrs ago. That day, the envious Igbos who say the Nobel prize is nothing, will finally regard that prize seeing that an Igbo has also won it behind the Yorubas. |
| Re: Imperialism And Politics Of The Nobel Prize by Throwback: 9:12pm On May 26, 2018*. Modified: 1:46am On May 27, 2018 |
PVision2020:The agony the Igbos feel on realising the feat of Wole Soyinka as a celebrated playwright who ticks all the boxes for the 3 genres of literature (Prose, Poetry, Play/Drama), consumes them to the point that they cannot hide the shame and defeat. To the Igbo, Literature is only about fictional prose, so since Achebe is a celebrated fictional writer, he ought to have won the Nobel prize before a Wole Soyinka who was a poetry and drama genius. They do not care that Soyinka is also a celebrated poet and playwright/dramatist who Achebe cannot measure up to. In fact, the reasons for the selection of each winner of the Nobel prize of all categories and all the years is written boldly on the website. The reason for Wole Soyinka's merit of the award is as stated below, but will our bitter and envious Igbos ever give up their bad belle? The Nobel Prize in Literature 1986So why are Igbos still besides themselves with grief and comparing a poetry and drama genius who also had footprints in prose, with their own fictional prose genius? I reckon Achebe's lack of versatility in Literature that Soyinka possessed, ensured he will not have the crowning glory that Soyinka accomplished for Africa. To them, the Igbos must have everything and everything any other Nigerian achieves, is a robbery perpetrated against the Igbo. The delusional belief is to even think that Achebe was being considered or was a runner up in the selection process for the 1986 award, such that if Soyinka was not selected, Achebe would have been the alternative. Adichie has never been a Pulitzer finalist talkless of even winning the Pulitzer like the Yoruba Journalist Dele Olojede who won it as the first African born winner of that also illustrious prize that has also eluded those who envy the Yoruba and have been determined to catch up with them. |
