Now, I know you know that it usually takes a ton of time and effort to find winning products to sell, like the slim teas and the toning creams of this world, but nowadays, – not anymore.

There are a ton of people of people jumping into the mini-importation business in Nigeria because it is profitable, and also because the Internet has greatly reduced barriers of entry with the likes of Alibaba, Aliexpress, 1688, Wish, Liquidation, etc…
And honestly, after a short training, they are left to test and experiment with different products month after month until they can find a winning product and strike gold. But frankly, while testing is a great adventure, for someone with a limited start-up budget, it also means your time and money are going down the drain.
So what if I told you that you could find winning products, their suppliers and targeted audiences in a jiffy?
And all without:
Spending N1,000 – N10,000 testing Facebook ad targeting.
Spending hours trying to think of a problem you can solve.

From practise, there are two major ways to spy on your competition, and this is really powerful stuff if you didn’t know already. You can;
1. Monitor Facebook Ads on your timeline: Going forward, you should closely monitor product ads on your Facebook Timeline. When you notice there’s a huge amount of likes, shares and comments on a particular product advert, itindicates that people are genuinely interested in acquiring that product, and you have a POTENTIAL winner right there. It means people are interested in that product, people would like to have that product, and if you decide to sell that product, chances are you will get the same or better responses depending on your promotion.

NOW HERE’S A SWEET SPOT:
Did you know that you can know the exact targeting used to generate the amount of interest you saw on that Advert?

To complement your Facebook Advert monitoring effort, I will also show you how to get the targeting information for any Ad you are monitoring simply because it pains me to see people struggle so hard without results. You can thank me later.

At the top right corner of any sponsored ad, you will see three dots, click on it. This gives you a drop-down menu of options, click on ‘’why am I seeing this?’’ You will see a break-down of the targeting information associated with that Ad.

Here’s a sample of the process in pictures:

The summary of the targeting data, is that Fabulous Fashion Collections want to reach people with;

Interest – Shopping.
Demographics – 25 and older.
Location – Abuja.

Cool trick right?

Note: Facebook only allows you to use the ‘’Why am I seeing this’’ feature about 7 – 9 times daily, after that they will stop you so you don’t abuse the feature. Use your daily passes wisely.

Now the second and I believe most effective of the two ways is;

• Using tools to hunt down winning products on other established stores: (Thank you technology!) There are a number of tools I use to find products that are already selling well on major foreign stores. These tools help to acquire the data for winning products which include: Profit, Analytics, Engagement, Links, Facebook Ad copy, Product Video, and Facebook Targeting. Some of the tools you can use are Intellygence Chrome Extension, Commerce Inspector, etc…

With this method, you completely save money and time as the data you get access to can take you from 0 sales in months, to multiple sales weekly.

It is so simplified that all you have to do is choose a winning product, get the data, prepare your promotions, get the product from suppliers, set your prices, and then target your audience on Facebook like the pro you will become.
Remember earlier I said you needed 3 things to really become a successful mini-importer? While we’ve already talked about the possibility of products, where you also need to focus on is your audience – the buyers.

Let me address your perception. I thought the same as well initially, but then I realized that it is people you are selling to and people have problems that need resolving, people love fancy things, and people like to imitate what other people are using whether they are in the US, UK or Nigeria. For example, people abroad have pimples/acne and people in Nigeria have the same, people abroad love handbags and dresses and so do Nigerians, people abroad have beards they groom, and so do Nigerians. Do you see where I am going with this?

As an importer, you even need to introduce newer, more effective solutions to your audience rather than constantly dwelling on the old. The caliber of people you want to market to that can give you a profit, are people who want what the abroad people are using (excuse my grammar).

All the slim teas, creams, dresses, handbags, rechargeable juicer, handheld sewing machine, are solutions that were created and used by people abroad first, before one enlightened importer decided to bring it to the Nigerian market and they have generated millions. So much so that a lot of people jumped into importing those items as well. But it can never be like the first few people who imported it.

So you don't want to limit yourself to what is selling, that is cool and you can find that by monitoring your Facebook timeline, or looking for best sellers on Jumia and Konga, but you also want to get your own winning product, be among the first to introduce it and collect the dough.

Unlike Amazon and the likes, Jumia and Konga are not exactly open about displaying bestselling items on their site. However they release a bestseller list annually? (I'm not really sure about the frequency) but you will have to sign-up for their newsletter to catch this.

Another way is to look at the ''recommended for you'' category on the home page. The product offerings here are few, but from my previous experience with a large e-commerce organization, frequently sold products are normally displayed in this category.

And my third and final suggestion will be to do what I call ''Category Drilling.'' You have to select a niche and drill down to the products in that niche. You will know best selling products by the number of sales and positive reviews on each product.
