After watching our England friendly again yesterday, here is my comprehensive reports of the match and players assessment




First of the block is our 4-3-3 formation which Rohr played in the first half. It wasn't a flat 4-3-3 rather it was a 4-2-1-3 where Onazi and Joel Obi were meant to shield the defence immediately while Mikel was to sit back behind our 3 attackers.

Ordinarily this setup should work if each man played his part well but unfortunately Onazi and Joel obi didn't and the whole team ended up paying for it.

Onazi in particular was terribly piss-poor in that match that it seems it was a deliberate attempt to by him to disorganize our play. Damn, Onazi couldn't stay in his position, he couldn't mark, he couldn't pass, he couldn't hold on to the ball, he was everywhere but no where in particular.

Several times he was caught out of position, and when we struggle to win back the ball and pass to him, Onazi will gladly gift the ball back to the English. The only time he made a successful pass was when he hurriedly returned a pass back to Joel Obi who initially passed to him because he was under pressure with 3 markers on him, but what did Onazi do?.. He passed back to Joel who was already choked obviously the ball was stolen.

Onazi kept on leaving gaps after gaps for the English to exploit, he would rather do another person's job than do his. Several times Idowu and Joel will have their man marked only for Onazi to run in from nowhere claiming he wants to mark too. Mikel will go forward to press, and you will see Onazi chasing him

Now we won't be talking about this issue if he was winning these balls, no! Because while he is running, Before he gets to assist his colleagues and inorder to double team the opponent,.. Fiam!... The opponent has passed the ball straight to the same spot where Onazi is coming from, leaving behind acres of space and time for a damage to be done.

Again and again this repeated sloppy play was what Onazi kept on doing. It was terrible and an eyesore to watch. I wonder how he is going to remedy such shambolic display. He should be forced to remain in front of the two center backs please.

As for Joel Obi, that one was another error going forward. They were several times he sent balls forward which didn't connect with our Frontline. He always kick the ball so waywardly without end product. In middle and defense, it was a battle between him and Onazi on who will get more in each other's way.

He was busy playing what we call "anywhere belle face" football. Both on the ball and off the ball. He had no business clashing with Balogun because he should have seen that the ball was Balogun's to clear from miles away, he actually made us a laughing stock with that head clash.

If Onazi or idowu or Moses had the ball, instead of opening for a pass, he will rather bump into them. Likewise Onazi, instead of opening for a pass, he will go and bump or intercept the player with the ball. Honestly, Rohr should have dropped one of the two.

Henceforth, i will suggest that if Rohr will play a 4-3-3 then it should be a flat one and should not be a 4-2-1-3 triangle anymore because with the triangle, plenty spaces will be left behind our CM and DM.

Let it be a trio of Onazi - - Mikel - - Joel instead of

The flat 3 man middle will be better than a triangle 3 man middle.


But honestly, 3-5-2 formation should be our main formation going into this world Cup. We succeeded in qualifiers against African oppositions using 4-3-3 but it seems 4-3-3 isn't working anymore against the rest of the world.

Football is dynamic, if we are well suited with 3-5-2 against world oppositions then by all means that is what we should be perfecting now.

Most matches are won from the midfield, whoever controls the middle dictates how the match will go, and whoever dictates how the match will go will most likely (around 80% of the time) determines who wins the game.

Let Rohr stop the experiments and focus on our midfield play and 3-5-2 formation perfection because as it is we don't have any problems with our Goalkeeping, Defense and attack. Our problem now is the our midfield... I repeat!.. We have a big problem in that midfield of ours.

Presently the midfield doesn't link up and provide supply for our strikers, the midfield doesn't provide cover for our defenders.. The midfield is presently not doing its job and Rohr is supposed to focus there. The middle is responsible for our uncoordinated play for so many matches now. Onazi and Joel should be made to sit on the bench with their seat belt fastened!!

Let Ogu, Etebo, and Ndidi pair mikel there henceforth.. Enough is Enough This experimentation with Joel Obi or Onazi must stop, it has to stop!!

However, Sone Aluko, Hope Akpan, with outstanding performances for the SE have been dropped, set aside and forgotten.

Hope Akpan is forgotten man, he is living on his little past glory.

Sone Aluko's past season is below Average, I mean he is way too below what was expected.

Aina took championship by fire but lost form towards the tail of the season. There was a time the coach started considering Tomori as better option.

Aina is the only person that tried, others you mentioned are below our standard currently. That they were born 'away' doesn't mean that they have 'already made' jersey no.

He scored only 8 goals in all this past season for Leicester... Three of them were from outside the box. Not one or two but three.

I disagree. Mikel's style of leadership is not by noisemaking or shouting on the pitch. I have seen Mikel carry the team even before he got the captain band.
Mikel is an inspirational leader. The players look up to him big time and draw keen inspiration from him. He motivates in the dressing room or in team meetings when he speaks to them... He motivates also when he galvanises them with his exemplary performances. Saying he lacks the will to motivate is missing the plot on how Mikel actually motivates this team both on and off the field. I remember seeing him urge the players on when we were applying the high press on England... I see these details and more. Even against Argentina, he kept urging them on even after being 2-0 down, using his hands to signal for them to keep fighting.
Remember how he led the U-23s to the Olympics too? Mikel has his style and the players absolutely cherishes his leadership.

Mikel is one of the team's biggest motivators if not the biggest. No question.

You have to rate these guys based on the number of minutes they played for the SE.

Etebor was on from start to finish against Algeria in Uyo and he was impressive.

Against Cameroon and Zambia both in Nigeria Agu came in as a substitute and held the CM and DM respectively, together. And these two games were our toughest of the whole qualifiers.

Against Algeria away Etebor was woeful.

Against Congo where we have both players together Agu owned and bossed that midfield with little effort while Etebor almost didn't come to play.

I wouldn't go into Onazi because he is practically done.

My point is that Agu has not started a game for Nigeria and there is no game he played and didn't impress

People are happy that we beat Argentina,naturally,they are happy with players that did it...Ogu s performance was outstanding...he showed his defensive prowess and tactical positioning...Again,you are as good as your last game...based on this, Ogu did well against England. His calming effects and uncanny positioning and defending was super grade

Going away from Onazi and Joel obi, let me talk more on other members of the team

Iwobi is our next generation number 10 and playmaker. That boy was born for this role. That guy is super talented, so far he has been played out of position several times and yet he has delivered (this is for those who are defending Aina to know that versatility of player is necessary and should never be a yardstick for poor performance).

Iwobi virtually stole the midfield against England especially in the second half, dude played with passion and hunger. He swapped severally with Mikel both in AM and CM and free role. And he was master class. Henceforth, Let him be taken from the wings and put in the middle and be allowed to so his thing. As a matter of fact, Rohr should stop this idea of double DM.

Mikel as usual was a leader and he played very well both first and second half. He held onto the ball well and dictated play with Iwobi in the second half. Our playmakers going to this world cup are 3. Mikel, Moses and Iwobi. I must say that we are really blessed. Because if any of them goes off day, tge remaining two will standin for him

Ekong is gradually turning into a beast, a warrior and a warlord in that defense. His command of our defense line is top notch and his awareness is something else. Kudos to him. I wonder what he is doing in a lowly Turkish league anyway. I pray this world cup brings him good fortunes.

Ebuehi, oh my Ebuehi .. Small but mighty, lanky but strong as a steel. A fine mixture of skill, technique and grit, with power runs down the flank. He bested Ashley Young and practically left him gasping for breath. Let him add assist and goalscoring to his chart and Marcelo won't have nothing on him.

Balogun is as a fine wine in the heart of our defense, he did his job cleanly and neatly. If not for the clash of head with Joel which switched him off, he had a fine game. With him on, our Oyinbo wall is still very much intact. Tho we conceded two goals in the first half, he did well enough to keep the scoreline respectable while Ekong was trying to get into the game. BTW, if the midfield hadn't opened up like they did, the defence would have shielded us well

Idowu.. On him i will say little, he did his bit and could rarely be faulted except in the first half when walker and co ran riot at his wing. Then again, our whole defense was on panic mode because of our midfield couldn't do there job, so idowu is excused


Uzoho was super all through, i can't fault him for either of those goals, the velocity of that second goal in particular was too high. Yes it came directly at him but i have seen top Goalkeepers flap at such shots before so i will give him a pass. As a matter of fact, he did better than the English keeper.

Ighalo.. Needs feeding to score. There is practically nothing any striker can do when he is not fed. The only time he got fed, he rattled the post which Iwobi scored on the rebounds. Rohr has to work on our midfield inorder to supply him more.. Enuf said

Moses.. Unfortunately i like his one man football, his game brings a different approach to how we play. Sometimes it works, other times its irritating but overall its been effective so far. I will say, just let him do his thing.

Shehu.. I believe he has overstayed his makeshift startup right fullback. Please let him start from the bench henceforth, he can always deputies for Ebuehi. Thank you

Ogu... My man is a cool, calm but dangerous midfielder. Who can shoot and give tidy passes as well. We all saw the calmness he brought into the game when brought on. As a matter of fact, with Ogu in the midfield, you are assured of a dangerous long Ranger at any time. Something Joel obi can't do

Etebo... Like Forgiveness will say "on and off" player. well on his day, you will see a beast but on his off day, he is either climbing a shoulder or simply turning into a nuisance but against England, he too brought sanity to our midfield.

Omeruoh... I will say that finally i can put back my trust in him again (i actually removed my trust when he gifted SA 2014 and Zambia 2016). So far he has proved rock solid and infact he is a current threat to our oyinbo wall with his commanding presence in our backline.
