Technical Talk.... F-35 engine
__________

The LiftFan of the F-35B generates 89 kN of thrust which is more than the full afterburner thrust of the GE F404 engine onboard the LCA Tejas or the Gripen.
★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★
While developing the LiftSystem many engineering difficulties had to be overcome, and new technologies exploited.

The LiftFan utilises hollow-bladed titanium blisks (a bladed disk or "blisk" achieved by super-plastic forming of the blades and linear friction welding to the blisk hub). Organic matrix composites are used for the interstage vanes. The LiftFan must safely function at flight speeds up to 250 knots (130 m/s) This condition appears as a crosswind to the horizontal intake and occurs when the aircraft transitions between forward flight and hover.

The clutch mechanism uses dry plate carbon–carbon technology originally derived from aircraft brakes. Friction is only used to engage the lift fan at low engine speeds. A mechanical lock-up is engaged before increasing to full power.

The gearbox has to be able to operate with interruptions to its oil supply of up to a minute while transferring full power through 90 degrees to the LiftFan.

The Three-Bearing Swivel Module has to both support the final hot thrust vectoring nozzle and transmit its thrust loads back to the engine mounts. The "fueldraulic" actuators for the 3BSM use fuel pressurised to 3,500 lbf/in2, rather than hydraulic fluid, to reduce weight and complexity. One actuator travels with the swivel nozzle, moving through 95 degrees while subject to intense heat and vibration.

Dear Mr. LionelRichie,

Please forgive me for interrupting your "F-35 tea party". Rather than just copying hybrid propaganda from Amerikan blogs & military sites who are only doing their nasty jobs of marketing these "flying coffins" at all cost, I'd like to draw your attention to an important document from one of Amerika's shrinking allies - The Australian Government titled:

"THE OBSOLESCENCE OF THE F-35 AS A STRIKE PLATFORM"

This beautiful document - which I love so much, even went a step further in defining the word "ob·so·les·cence" for those who may not know its definition. grin

1. The process of passing out of use or usefulness; becoming obsolete.

2. The process/condition of going out of date, surpassed or being no longer of use.

3. Biology Reduced during the course of evolution; made no longer useful; vestigial
or nearly vestigial. Used of an organ or other part of an organism.

However, in case you do not have much time on your hands to peruse this document, I have highlighted some of the high points stated in this document. grin

The pervasive changes in capabilities we are seeing both in the region and globally were not anticipated when the JSF program was defined during the 1990s. Claims by Defence and the prime contractor that the F-35 can be competitive and survivable against such capabilities have no basis in fact, and examination of such claims consistently shows reliance on unvalidated simulations, personal opinion, hearsay and logical fallacies.

The capabilities being deployed by Russia, China and their clients, are not unsophisticated Soviet era designs, built to compete with specific Western systems of that period – including the same Tier 2 Western systems with which the F-35A JSF is required by its JORD vi to be comparable! Russia’s technological strategists during the 1990s defined very specific and well-considered goals for Russia’s post Cold War developments in air power which, as in China, have materialised in spades under the guidance and drive of some of the world’s best new age capitalists.

These included the capability to deny “offboard sensor data” to Western fighters, by denying the use of, or shooting down, Western ISR (Intelligence Surveillance Reconnaissance) and Electronic Attack platforms. Russia developed very long range Surface to Air and Air to Air Missiles for this purpose, the former including the now operational 400 km range S-300V4/SA-23, and the S-400 Triumf / SA-21vii (See Annex D).

These capabilities are now supplemented by a range of new “Counter-Stealth” long-wave AESA radars, operating in frequency bands outside of those that the F-35’s stealth capability was built to defeat, allowing the F-35 to be tracked at tactically useful rangesix. (Annex E).

Thank you sir! grin cheesy grin
