donanod: Good day everyone. I have learnt a thing or two here and I think it’s best I give back.
My visa interview on 22nd May went thus:
VO: Why are you going to The University of Texas Arlington? Me: To pursue my MS in Materials Science and Engineering
VO: How did you get to know UTA? Me: A combination of advise from EducationUSA Advisers and my interest in Materials for Solar energy research informed my choice
VO: Did you apply to other schools? Me: Yes I did - Stevens Institute of Technology and University of North Texas
VO: So why did you pick UTA over the others? Me: My correspondence with the Graduate Advisor at UTA convinced me that the Materials Science and Engineering program at UTA matched my proposed research focus best
VO: When did you get your Bachelors? Me: 2015
VO: What did you do afterwards? Me: Went for my NYSC which concluded in October 2016
VO: Where did this take place? Me: Told her
VO: What were your duties and responsibilities? Me: I taught Physics and Further Mathematics to secondary school students
VO: Who will be funding your studies? Me: My Dad will
VO: What does he do? Me: Told her
VO: Do you know anyone in the US? Me: Yes, my Uncle and Sister
VO: What is your sister’s major? Me: Told her
VO: Your visa has been approved, be sure to keep your I-20 well because it’s very important. You will be contacted via text and email as soon as your passport is ready for pickup.
For some context: UG GPA: 3.51/4.00 (Major: Materials Science and Engineering) GRE: 315 - Q160 V155 AW3.0 TOEFL: 105 - R26 L28 S26 W25
What worked for me may or may not work for you. Similarly, what works for you may or may not work for me. However, we never know what works until we try.
I believe in God and He was and still is very important in all this.
Thanks to everyone who makes out time to offer their opinion and advice here. Cheers! Congrats...were you given any form of funding??. 1 Like |

abromeo: why do you want to study this course?
Why this university?
I choose CSUB because of they gave me admission early and they have good facilities to help student in their studies more over in CSUB i wouldn't just be another face in the crowd. i will work closely with highly qualified and experienced professors in modern classroom and laboratory settings
I have a National Diploma degree in computer science with this background this course is going to enhance my knowledge more and Nigeria is transferring her business processes from manual to automated so acquiring technical skills will make me remain relevant in the Nigerian business world. I hope to build modules and software's that will restructure the Nigeria business world.I hope to have an IT company in the southwestern of Nigeria just like Adela did here in Lagos. .i know this program will help increase my knowledge and give me the ability to design, implement and improve software solutions across Nigeria
Where are you going to in the US
I'm going to California State University Bakersfield, for my undergraduate degree in computer science
Why this university?
I choose CSUB because of the amount of quality research going on there in the field of Computer Science. I came to know that my research interest matches with the faculty there also as student I will be assigned a professor as my mentor and i had email correspondence with Professor Albert Cruz in which we had similar research interests and I wish to join his research group ..he also he made me to know that i wouldn’t have issues settling in the new environment besides at CSU Bakersfield, I wouldn’t just another face in the crowd. I will work closely with highly qualified and experienced professors in modern classroom and laboratory settings.
Why do you wish to study in the US ?
Ans. United State schools are way ahead in research in fields like Computer science. when compared to other countries of the world. Moreover, they stress on practical knowledge & not just book learning. A degree from united state is globally recognized as the academic standards are very high. Nigeria Universities do not have enough facilities to support students in their research, whereas US Universities have sound infrastructure to support students to gain both the theoretical as well as practical knowledge.Hence a degree on here does not really help in fulfilling the career goals of a person like me
What are the courses offered ? or What type of courses are there ?
Ans. There are a variety of courses offered at California State University such as Data Management, Java , c++ ,information technology, software management, Application package , introduction to computer science...e.t.c
How many schools did you apply to
3 schools
CSUB ,TROY university Alabama,Wichita state university
O; how did you hear about this school
ME : i discovered this school by extensive online research via google.com and academic search engines such as usnews.com internationalstudent.com, and i narrow my research to the school that has my research interest.
Vo: whos paying Me: My Mom. She an Real Estate Agent she sells and buy landed property.
what area will you specialize in
Me: Software development . This is because of the low rate of software development here in Nigeria. Actually that gap need to be close.
When did you finish high school?
ME: 2012
VO: What have you been doing since?
ME: I first went to obtain my National diploma degree in computer science at Yaba college of technology
VO: what course your ND IN and what year did you finish?
ME: In Computer science and finished in 2017
VO: Have you traveled out before
ME: I havent had any reason to until now.
*********************************************************
I need more review please , thanks
Please help check and criticize ....Thanks |

VO- Why Bleep University? Me- [s]"Apart from the fact that I was impressed by the level of responsiveness of bleep Uni grad admission with consequently led to early admission decisions"[/s], bleep also houses 3 National Research Centre of Excellence.( names them) I intend to take advantage of this facilities to carry out research peculiar to my concentration. Gurus abeg help una boy please Raycupid: Please this is my proposed transcript, scrutinize mercilessly as I would rather get it here than from the VO Me:Good morning VO: good morning, pass ur i20 and passport Me: passes them VO : where re u heading to? Me : Prairie View A & M university Texas, for my masters in electrical Engineering. VO: So why PVAMU? Me: I chose PVAMU for some reasons, the main ones being that I would love to have the opportunity to work with two professors from the university, prof obiomon and prof xianglang ,during my search for schools I was very intrigued on their approach in the fields of micro electronics where they instead of the Norm of viewing them mainly as tools in computer Engineering and telecommunications, instead utilized them for computational Biology and systems pharmacology in their various researches. In addition to this PVAMU Is well equipped with good laboratories and research centres with Notable fundings from both NASA and NIH, I Look forward to working in center for computational systems biology which is one of the six main research centers of the dept. VO: What would this course do for u? Me: I currently work As Junior maintenance engineer in *** pharmaceutical, this degree with a concentration in microelectronics would give me the required training in machine circuitry and also design and maintenance of electronic components such as this used in microprocessor used in control systems for manufacturing processes, this would see me rise to the position of a senior maintenance and controls Engineer. Also as because of my proposed research topic, I look forward to working with the pharmacology research team. VO: How did u get to know about PVAMU? Me: it was one of the schools recommended by a senior colleague ,so I then researched more about it via college sites. VO: how many schools did u apply to? Me: Three schools, PVAMU ,University of Louisville, UND. VO: What have u been doing after Graduation? Me: First I did my NYSC and then after that I got a job as a maintenance engineer at ***pharmaceutical. VO: Who would be sponsoring you? Me: my parents would co sponsor with my aunt and her husband ********* PS: My first degree was in mech Engineering. please gurus take a look and highlight any loopholes or things I didn't address

You diversify some risk away when you apply to more than 1 school. I applied to 8 schools (A3, R4, W1). You've got to invest time to research on them. I only paid application fee for 2 of them, others only cost me time and data. And yes, I also did the WES evaluation, but I ended up not using it. |

Oh, I see. But I doubt the fact that international students cannot apply [of course, I could be wrong.]. While it's true that it's not a stand-alone MSc, prospective international undergrad students can still apply. There are no programs in UW-Madison that a certain category of students cannot apply to. Tittle 9, bro. It is very important for you to read instructions before choosing schools to apply. UW-Madison's MS Finance is just like a 5th year program for their undergraduates. They take courses in their fourth years (final year of undergraduate), do a summer internship and then complete the coursework in their 5th year. A lot of schools do such and I remember one of the Texas schools having such a platform. The program is not open to international applicants or even applicants from other universities. This is my propose transcript. Guys please tell me where I need to improve
WHY ARE YOU GOING TO THE U.S ? I am going to the U.S to pursue a bachelors degree in supply chain management at southern Arkansas university magnolia.
WHEN DID YOU FINISH HIGH SCHOOL 2011
WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING After my high school in 2011, I did a one year program in computer studies and after that I went for my national diploma and in 2015 I did a one year industrial attachment at xxxxx company where I was luckily retained.
SO WHY ARE YOU JUST GOING FOR YOUR BACHELORS DEGREE I discussed with my boss 3years ago about my career plans which I considered to be 3-4-4. That is 3years with them, then proceed for 4years bachelors degree, then come back for another 4years before going for my Masters degree.
TELL ME YOUR STUDY PLAN I will be taking 120 hours of credit course over the period of 48month which some of the courses I will be taking includes: leadership ethics, human resources management, entrepreneurship, supply chain management, total quality management and so on.
TELL ME ABOUT YOUR SCHOOL Southern Arkansas university is a public institution located in magnolia, Arkansas. Situated less than 20miles north of the Louisiana state line. It was founded in 1909 and it utilizes a semester based academic calendar. It as a 17:1 student to instructor ratio.
HOW MANY SCHOOL DID YOU APPLY TO 4. Penn state uni, Michigan state uni, uni of Houston Victoria and southern Arkansas uni.
HOW MANY ADMIT 2. SAU and University of Houston Victoria.
SO WHY SAU I chosed this school because it has a corporative and experiental educational program which integrates classroom experience into real life world connecting me with the experts in my field of study and also it has a structured curriculum which aligns with my career aspiration with the aim of developing me with the technical, analytical and concepted skills to become a globally attuned leader in my profession
WHAT WILL THIS COURSE DO FOR YOU It will better equip me with the requisite technical expertise coupled with the experience and expertise that would prepare me for a leadership role at my place of work when am back to Nigeria. Also a degree in supply chain management is in high demand. A lot of companies here outsource this skill because it's professional expertise and skill supply is still very low. I intend to learn this skill using global best practise that can be modelled for use here.
HOW DID YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS SCHOOL Even though SAU was recommended to me by my boss. I did an extensive research online for schools offering supply chain management. I narrowed down my s
HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT THIS COURSE My current line manager told me how taking a course in supply chain management was very instrumental to his career growth and I also aspire to become a supply chain manger in the nearest future.

I am still not sure that an international student cannot get admitted into the MS Finance track. Come on! There are many international students who got admitted into the program after one or two semesters of their undergrad career. That international student are barred from the program is a bit ridiculous. ![smiley](https://www.nairaland.com/faces/smiley.png) 1 Like 1 Share |
