HIGH RISK

Just then, they saw Nurse Josephine entering the compound from her night duty. Today she was not wearing her uniform. She had changed into a fitted black gown and slung a handbag on one shoulder. She was deliberate in her movement; the sway of her hips noticeable as daylight.

“Bros. Shey you see why that thing wey Mister Cosmas talk hard? How person no go look this kind yansh ehn, which kind wahala be dis?”

“You don’t have to look Irikefe. Look somewhere else.”

So they both turned to face the back of the shops and continued talking. Irikefe said, “Ehen bros, did you hear that Buhari has now declared June 12 democracy day instead of May 29 and awarded MKO GCFR?”

“It’s in the news.”

“All of that na wash. If he likes, let him celebrate Awolowo’s birthday on December 25th we dey vote am out next year.”

“Hahaha. And I hear the whole thing sparked a rowdy debate in the house of Reps. Dina Meleye and Alfa Belgore are reinterpreting the Law too. Many think it is political desperation. They believe once they mention MKO that people will start cumming. They should remember what happened when they wanted to rename UNILAG.”

“But this is already gazzetted by the president and the families of both MKO and Gani have accepted. So it may be too late for detractors.”

“Well, whatever. Come 2019, we are changing the change. Err bros, she don pass?”

“I don’t know. I’m also not looking.”

“I hope say the God of Mr Cosmas dey see o. I dey try keep my eyes pure as well. Ehen, you see how our super Eagles dey mess up anyhow? You see Onazi the other day?”

“They said it is because he stopped paying tithe to T.B Joshua. So dem don tie him leg. See as him dey use belle dey run against England.”

“Hahaha. But what happened against Chech Republic when he did not play?”

“They put John Ogu. That one wey him yansh fat like Nurse Josephine own.”

“Excuse me?”

They both knew it was the nurse but they pretended not to have heard.

“I think the new kit is getting into their heads. They think they are models. Dem go hear am when we meet Croatia next week. Players like Luka Modric, Ivan Rakitic and Mario Mandzukic – guys that have played at the highest level of club football. Guy, wahala dey o!”

“Did someone just mention my name?” Josephine said.

They now turned and faced her.

“Good morning nurse,” They said in unison.

“Irikefe I heard what you said.”

“Haba Nurse. No be so na. Nurse Jo. Can I call you Jo?”

“I don’t have your time. Ndi, I need to see you,” she said.

“Irikefe saw Ndifreke’s discomfort and said “Err nurse, you can see me instead. He is not feeling too well.”

“Is your girlfriend attending antenatal in my hospital?”

“Oh…”

With that, she turned and went inside. “Let me freshen up. I’ll come to your room.”

“But bros, why can’t she just see you out here? Me I can shift if I am a distraction.”

“I don’t know Irikefe. But don’t worry, I’ll be fine.”

“I hope so.”

“What do you mean by you hope so?”

“Bros, lets just say I cover you with the blood of Jesus.”

Ndifreke shook his head and went inside.

Lukman noticed the exchange from a distance. He had started avoiding Ndifreke since he realized the scum was also interested in the nurse. He did not want to hear “she is treating Maya. It’s nothing” and all that type of rubbish. He had seen enough movies to understand what was going on. Moreso, the nurse looked at him the way she did not look at any other man on Katakata Street, much less him. He would never forget the day he asked her out after talking to Ndifreke about it.

“Good morning Nurse.”

“Yes, barber, how can I help you?”

Barber! That was what she called him. After he had gone and waited at the gate of the hospital!

“Call me Lukman, dearie.”

“Dearie? Since when?”

“Err, not like that nurse.”

“What is this all about Lukman? As you can see, I am just closing from work. I have had a long night.”

“Erm nurse. Actually, I went to see a friend, so as I was going back I saw you coming out so I said maybe I can accompany you back home.”

Josephine was used to this type of attention. Some years back she would have been adamant that she be left alone. Now she was resigned to the fact that men were attracted to her and would always plague her and she had to live with it. She tried not be rude if it was a man she did not fancy. She would let the barber walk with her and say whatever it was he wanted to say. Since they lived in the same compound, he would eventually get to understand the league she played in and return to his lane.

“You know nurse, since the first day I saw you I felt the need to rub minds with you.”

“Oh.”

“Yes nurse. Since you came to this compound my mind has been shaking, and I know that it will only stabilize after I rub it with yours.”

“Hmmm.”

“Yes nurse.”

“Oya, rub the minds let me hear.”

“I have been waiting for this opportunity all my life nurse. I am twenty-six years old. Since I realized myself, I have only had the picture of one woman in my mind. From the first day I saw you it was as if the angels took the picture in my mind and moulded it into you.”

“Oh really?”

“Yes nurse. I may not be up and down the country to impress you, but if you let me, I will show you that there is another level of love that is yet to be discovered which I will take you to.”

With the mention of the word love, Josephine’s mind slammed shut. Everything else he said went with the morning wind. She started thinking about the day ahead. She would of course sleep after the night she had had. Food was what she was not sure about. She had options, even though she preferred to do her cooking. She realized that they were nearing their compound and stopped and faced Lukman who was still waxing lyrical.

“Barber. A word of advice from a nurse.”

“Please say it my sunshine.”

“Stay away from codeine.”

With that, she trotted on, leaving him standing there with mouth agape.

Lukman began to sweat in his jacket. He found a handkerchief from his breast pocket and dabbed sweat from under his eye patch. Was that a wrong approach? Did he say anything wrong? Could he have just waited for her to notice his personality? But how could he do that when Achike was trekking to Cotonou for her everyday? What else was he going to show? Was it not better to kuku tell her his mind as he opted to do? What kind of embarrassment was that? He had lingered on the street and then finally returned to tell Ndifreke what had happened when he saw them going to her room almost hand in hand.

Lukman shook his head as he thought about it. Just then, Maya’s little brother Tobi met him beside the kerosene tank at number 223 where he stayed out of sight to observe the compound. Tobi was a hip-hop enthusiast like himself; this made them close even though Tobi was much younger. It was he alone Tobi confided in that he was going to go into music and become the next African China, an artist whose unique pidgin reggae dancehall style he hoped to keep alive, especially now that the veteran had started flirting with hair-dressing. “A new voice of the masses must arise from this ghetto.” Tobi once enthused.

“Did you see Falz new video Bro Lukman?”

“This is Nigeria abi?’

“Yes, the guy badt! The girls in hijab doing shaku shaku. Did you see their hips?”

“Hahahaha see this smallie. You sef dey look hips.”

“Bro Lukman you know say I know everything na.”

“Well, some Muslims are fighting him over that. He may pull it down.”

“Lai lai. They said they would take him to court. Meanwhile, he, his mother, his father, and all his ancestors are lawyers. Nothing will come out of it.”

“Of course I know that. He has already said he won’t pull it down. The thing is giving the boy even more fame. Pididy, BBC, everybody rushing on his train. And na copy copy o! Wetin me I come do for this Lagos sef?”

“You need to get brain to know when to copy and how to copy well. De guy try.”

“Na true.”

“Bro Lukman. E be like say something dey worry you.”

As he said that, an idea struck Lukman.

Mama Akunna finished changing her grandson’s nappy. The baby was staring at her intently. Though he could not talk when he was in his body, he did understand what was said to him and was conscious of the goings on in his environment. He sensed his grandmother was worried. So he looked into her eyes for an answer. She did not want to look at him. She fed him and got him dressed and just as she was about to strap him onto her back he decided to screech. He let out a few loud pitches and then she said, “All right I will tell you. I am worried about Maya. I don’t like what I’m sensing. Tonight the incarnation we need will happen; I will get my sister into her womb. Tonight she experiences the first kick.”
The baby stopped crying as abrubtly as he had started to. His grandmother tied him to her back and went outside to look for Wasiu.

“Emm, I don’t mean to be rude nurse, because I appreciate what you are doing for me. Just that I wonder why we have to only meet in private. You know how it is with me.”

“What are you afraid of?”

“Nothing. Just that people here are, you know, quick to draw conclusions.”

“You shouldn’t worry about their conclusions if you are not doing anything untoward. Unless you are unsure of yourself. Can I sit?”

“Sure.”

She sat on the stool he offered her. Like in just about all the rooms you would enter in a face me I face you, there was hardly room for more than one chair so unless you trade the place of a wardroble, a cupboard or a table. A bed was always a given. The boys’ room could have had more than one chair if they wanted, as it was notably scanty. But they chose to have only the one stool. The other seat would inevitably be the bed. Ndifreke would not sit on the bed but remained standing. She was grateful that the room was kept clean at least.

He leaned against the wall and watched her.

“I am a medical practitioner. I know the value of confidentiality. You might think it is okay to talk outside or in the corridor but I know it is not. Here, not only the walls – the doors, ceiling, the breeze, they all have ears. I will tell you what I have to tell you in what I am sure is utmost confidentiality, and then you decide if you want to tell others. But I will not stand outside and tomorrow we wonder how the information got out.”

“I understand nurse. I’m sorry.”

“It’s alright. Now I will insist that you sit down.”

“I am fine nurse.”

“You need to sit for what I am about to tell you.”

Now Ndifreke was worried. He left the wall and sat on the bed and faced the nurse inevitably.

“Now before I tell you about your girlfriend I want you to understand something.”

“Tell me.”

“I am not trying to seduce you. I don’t have to.”

“No nurse, don’t say that.”

“If we don’t settle this we will continue to have these awkward situations I do not want.”

“Okay.”

“I have seen your eyes. I know you are struggling. I at first thought you would be difficult because you hardly glanced at me when I first came here. But from the moment you put your eyes on me I have already seen that you are only a man afterall.”

“Come on nurse.”

“I won’t make your life any more complicated than it already is. Nothing will happen between us because I have enough sense not to let it happen. Not because you know how to have serious conversations in public or can rest on a wall and keep a distance.”

“I love Maya, nurse.”

“Well I’m impressed.”

“I said I’m sorry.”

“Alright. Now that we understand ourselves, I’ll go straight to the point. Your girlfriend is anaemic as I feared. Acutely so as a matter of fact. And her thyroid hormones are too low. I will not bore you with the technicalities of the situation but I can tell you that her pregnancy is high risk. She needs a lot of care and monitoring and everything she is not getting at the moment.”

“My God.”

“Yes, I thought so. Why I said you should sit.”

“What do I do nurse?”

“I suggest you go and talk to her mother.”

“She is not willing to cooperate.”

“Well, she has no choice. She could lose a child and grandchild or both. Be a man and walk up to her. You both have to sit down and see what you can do for Maya. After she has had her baby, then you can fight over her future. For now, it is her health alone that should matter.”

“Is it about money? The need to talk to her.”

“Yes and no. Yes because you cannot afford the care she needs. No because we are talking about an unmarried teenage girl who is still living with a parent. Even if you had the money, you need access to her to be able to be there for her. Her mother also needs to stop her drama and save her child.

“Nurse, why don’t you help me and tell her?”

“I can, but I needed to tell you first. You are my client, so to speak.”

“Thank you.”

“You now owe us ₦30,000. The thyroid hormone test costs an additional 10k. We don’t always do it but after we lost someone recently with similar symptoms to your girlfriends’ I thought to add the test to what she needed to do.”

“I can’t thank you enough nurse. I will pay you back.”

“I bet you will,” she said and stood. Ndifreke stood too. There was a brief awkward moment when he was not sure what to do.

“Can I give you a hug?” He said.

“I don’t think that is a good idea,” she said and took two steps and reached the door. She was about to turn the knob when they heard a crashing sound and screaming from outside.

They both burst into the corridor at the same time and rushed to the foot of the stairs where they found Maya crumpled.

TO BE CONTINUED.
