The stats were no surprise, South Africa is a much more advanced, older economy than Nigeria, even politically and with more advances in infrastructure.. South Africa was also a settler colony... Without that much European influence South Africa most likely would have been like the rest of Africa..

To be frank, Nigerians in general are not so crazy about retail outlets, even some of my well to do Nigerian friends who live in the West complain to me how they miss those small markets around the neighbourhood where you could just go get anything you want. I'm surprised you see shoprite as something to brag about, we need malls in Nigeria, but even the middle class and rich Nigerians are not that crazy about shoprite and the likes, many prefer online shopping.
l like malls though, but then even here on Nairaland when an investor talks about building more malls, you would see the criticism and backlash from Nairalanders complaining about the irrelevance of malls.
