I guess you are talking about course work Masters and not thesis or research based Masters...
Different schools, different rules. people apply for MSC and are given Phd instead..
It is just easier to get funding with a Phd, cause it comes mostly with offers than an MSC Its not cast in stone... No he didn't!! Its harder to get a Phd admit than a master's, most schools have capacity to admit fewer doctoral students compared to master's, very few doctoral positions are available which makes it competitive compared to a masters and I will just leave it at that. 3 Likes |

Emmanuelson: Visa denied yesterday June 13 by the black American woman denied the two in front of me. My profile : Gre 313 Toefl : 110 Applied to five schools : university of New haven(50%scholarship, tamuk(in state tuition and $1k scholarship), university of New Hampshire($10k scholarship), MTSU and NCA. all accepted me and three gave me scholarship
Vo: pass your passport and i20 Me: passed Vo: why computer science Me: having studied computer engineering during my undergraduate, I started working in my department as a graduate assistant with a lecturer slot in waiting and I choose to study computer science because it aligned with my career goals and there are only few lecturers in my dept that can handle both fields of computer science and engineering so this will give me edge over the others Vo: why USA? Me : the us education systems have been deemed the best amongst all others and they are well know for their quality of education and research opportunities. Me Studying in an IT course and United States Being center of innovation and inventions with the big IT guys in the us I couldn’t think of a better place to go. Vo: what’s your highest level of education and when ? Me: B.Tech Computer engineering and 2015 Vo: what have you been doing since then ? Me: went for my nysc and have since been working as a GA in my school where I graduated Vo: how many schools did you apply too! Me:five Vo: why this school? Me: apart from the fact that I got a 50% scholarship that is equivalent to $8,235, one unique thing about university of New Haven computer science program is their area of cyber security and digital forensics network.the school have a state of art Henry c Lee institute of forensic science that feature a crime scene simulator center.. vo cuts in Vo: who is sponsoring you ? Me: in addition to the 50% scholarship I got, my parents will take care of my remaining expenses Vo: what do they do? Me: no , have not had any reason to Vo: I see you have a brother in the us ? Me: yes my little brother lives there along side my mom who are...she was typing then cuts in
I’m not convinced bla bla bla
Note: my mom and brother are both legal permanent residents in the US I went with my mom to her interview as a beneficiary few years ago but I rejected the immigrant visa because I don’t want to migrate to the us...
I would love to reapply please are there dates available for recently denied applicants now?
WOW!! Sorry It seems she figured out that you qualify for another category of VISA and that student visa root ain't the best for you. Because she definitely knows you will change status after approval. Your Relatives can File for You...(I think i read here someone saying that a VO was advising an applicant to file for Immigrant Visa instead of nonimmigrant this week on this forum).

like i said earlier, different schools different rules.. some schools have more seats for Phd than MSc, it all depends on the faculty Size and research area..
It is not cast in stone.
Most MSC research/thesis based students go in for their PhD after their MSC..., so bros, it is almost the same once you have a good academic profile and scores.
Most schools offer their MSC research and PHD students funding, thought majority are directed towards PhD cause of the long term commitment.
It is easier to get in for an MSC coursework degree. (This is the Cash Cow for most Schools), but baba MSC research Thesis and PhD are almost the same in Engineering, your research area matters.
I REST MY CASE. Have a good day |

Your insights and advise are excellent, however, you see the bolded line; that's where you goofed. Your knowledge of PhD application process is kinda parochial, maybe because you don't know that PhD application is like Job hunting, compared to MS its is NEVER easier. Chidinho10:
I like your choice of schools. PhD in Electrical Engineering should be easier to get than MS in same course

Visa approved on 8th June Lagos Embassy 7:15am My Transcript V.O: Good morning and how are you doing? Me: I'm fine and you? V.O: what are going to do in the USA? Me: to have my masters degree in Mathematics V.O: How do you find out about the school? Me: Through the recommendation of my mentor who is a professor of mathematics from the University of Lagos. V.O: What will you major on in mathematics? Me: I'll major on Abstract algebra V.O: (surprised ) Why abstract algebra? Me: The course is very scarce here in Nigeria and we have limited lecturers in the field, apart from that I created a deep love for this aspect of mathematics which made me the best student in algebra during my undergraduate and I also did my final year project in abstract algebra. V.O: how many universities did you apply to? Me: 4 V.O: Name them Me: Montana State University, University of Illinois Chicago, Howard University and Sam Houston State University. V.O: how many admits? Me: 2 V.O: Name them Me: Howard University and Sam Houston State University V.O: Why this particular school? Me:I was given assistanship V.O: (she checked my I-20) who will be paying for the little balance? Me: My dad V.O: What is he doing? Me:He works with the government and he has a filling station. V.O: what will you be doing as a G.A? Me:I'll be grading papers, leading group discussion and taking first year students tutorials. V.O: What is differential equation? Me ![sad](https://www.nairaland.com/faces/sad.png) I was not expecting this, but with confidence since its my field and I teach Further Mathematics and we just finished differential equations ) Differential Equations is used to balance or check the stability of two systems (I now remembered that this definition is an advance definition from stability theory) then I asked her "do you in want the dy/dx and she responded yes mathematically, given y=ax^n dy/dx=anx^n-1 V.O: What is the difference between abstract algebra and linear algebra? Me: (I felt like these questions don dey too much oooooo) algebra is a combination of symbols and the rules that guides the combination which is divided into two: Abstract Algebra is the abstract think section of mathematics which deals with groups, topology and others spaces, while linear algebra is an aspect of algebra that deals with straight equations. V.O: Do you have any friend or relative in the USA? Me: No (she brought out the white paper and I was just happy inside me, my mind no even dey Wetin she dey say again while she circled the part I'll pick the passport) V.O: Keep your I-20 as this will be needed at the point of entry and you will be using it as your ID in the US...... So sorry it's coming late. I just picked up my passport today and thanks to all those who posted their transcript cos I learnt a lot from all the transcript I can across here... You can even increase that figure to 5000%, honestly i think you are right. Just like I am also right to say white cows made white milk and brown cows made chocolate milk.
I won't comment further cos world people are already hovering looking for the next blackmail they will table against me. Red herring spotted.
So, that bolded line above is so out of place, I am still musing over the relationship between that line and the discussion at hand.
Just know that the AVERAGE application pool for MS EE is far more competitive than that of PhDs...
I sincerely want to know how you arrived at this motor park conclusion.

Please if one applies to just one school and get the admission although in the course of search for schools I had a short list of 4 schools but didn't apply further since admission application was made early and the 1st application was successful. Would it be bad to say I applied to just one school when a V. O ask. 1 Like |
