Please encourage her. Research is like a hybrid yoga and when you go into it you won’t regret doing that.

Some of the advantages of research using myself as example:

1. I have gained both national and international accolades

2. In my current university, I received the highest salary since am paid as research professor not as teaching professor even though I teach.

3. I am also an adjunct professor to two universities in another countries where I fulfill the duties on agreed terms.

4. In terms of combined salary, due to exchange rate currently is in the range of 1.8-2.5 mill Nigerian money monthly.

5. I also get research Funding where I can do my research, attend conferences, earn extra income and pay salaries as well to research assistants etc.

6. For each academic scientific publication I made, I get paid from both the university (1200 usd per Q1 paper) and the government (200-2500usd per paper depends on quality of paper). Meaning per Paper published, I can earn between 1400-3700 usd apart from my salary.

7. I also focus more on lab-to-market, where I directly sell my products or services to the public, industries and resellers. In the past, I have sold my tank designed to recover and purify phenols from Olive mill wastewater for 6700usd per unit.
I have sold custom sensors developed in my lab to commercial farmers. Also, my disposable glucose sensors are under clinical verification after which will be customized for commercialization etc.

8. I have got to learn many things and get increasingly exposed. Research, conference and business made me to have visited 65 countries, ...my target is 120 countries anyway.

9. Fortunately am quite young and some of my Phd students are almost as old as my dad and Mum. They appreciate and respect me. That makes them learn more.

10. I feel happy providing solutions to immediate problems around me.

#NOTE: there are currently financial fundings for innovative FEMALE researchers from Africa to encourage them.

With more research we can solve our problems and provide solutions to the populace, sell our ideas and products and develop the next sustainable creations.

Prof. Wip7, Sir, I must say you're a great source of inspiration to so many upcoming scholars. The Lord bless you real good.
Please what area of research can one dive into in microbiology (especially Environmental Microbiology).

Please what area of research can one dive into in microbiology (especially Environmental Microbiology).

Microbiology as we know has varied fields and majorly dealing with microorganisms. This course has high potential to generate huge income and has been well used by developed countries in food, biotech and allied industries. There are lots of microorganisms that are used in food and beverage preparation.

If you can have set of equipments to grow, isolate and extract the valuables from the bacteria, this will generate recurring incomes. Particularly, In our lab, we have grown and used 3 types of microorg that of commercial value to synthesis biomagnets and also used in microbial fuel cells.

For environmental Microbiology, you can look into any of the following that suit your interest considering the availability of equipment at your end:

modifications of the nutrients and other conditions for optimizing the bioremediation process.

Oil Biodegradation
Petroleum oil is toxic and pollution of the environment by oil causes major ecological concern. Much of the oil can be eliminated by the hydrocarbon-degrading activities of microbial communities, specifically the hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (HCB) and related microorgs.

Degradation of Aromatic Compounds by Acinetobacter
Aromatic compounds are found in various petrochemicals and pharmaceutical wastes. Acinetobacter strains isolated from the environment are capable of the degradation of a wide range of aromatic compounds.

Analysis of Waste Biotreatment
Biotreatment, the processing of wastes using living organisms, is an environmentally friendly alternative to other options. Bioreactors have been designed to overcome the various limiting factors of biotreatment processes in highly controlled systems.

Bioelectricity generation and simultaneous treatment of waste
You can check previous page where I have shown one of the hybrids MFC designed in my lab for electricity generation using microbes. A microbial fuel cell (MFC), or biological fuel cell, is a bio-electrochemical system that drives an electric current by using bacteria and mimicking bacterial interactions found in nature.

Microbial Enzymes: Production, Purification, Isolation and Commercial Utilization
Applied and Industrial microbiology uses microorganisms to produce valuable commercial products or to carry out important chemical transformations. You can read more via this link: http://www.contentextra.com/lifesciences/files/topicguides/9781447935674_LS_TG2_2.pdf

Below are some of the microorg that have been used. Best wishes as you carry on your research.

Prof. Wip7. It amazes me so much how a man of ur kind, with so much busy schedule still have time for us, people you barely know! Thank you so much and God bless!

My first degree is in Electrical and Computer Engineering and Master's in Communication Engineering.
My research interest lies in telecommunications. However, for the fact that I applied for PTDF Ph.D scholarship, I decided to do some work on IoT and M2M Networking.

Considering the trend of things and the status quo (wrt technology) I'd love to hear your view on an area that's blazing hot in my field and of course with less stress, lol that I could possibly consider??

Thank you so much sir.

Nice you have combined fields for yourself up there. These days, stuffs that have to do with digital solutions and smart device fabrications will be an asset for you personally and to deploy industrially.

You may look at:

1. Industrial IoT in 4G and 5G environment towards smart manufacturing

2. Development of Flexible Smart home energy management systems

3. Email based remote access and surveillance system for smart home

4. Flexible Device fabrication for Industrial use such sensors, meters and readers

5. Designing self-destructing wireless sensors with security and performance assurance

6. A wireless sensor network-based monitoring system for fishpond aquaculture

7. A IOT based wireless sensor network for traffic information monitoring

8. Low cost smartphone diagnostics for food, medical and agricultural use.

9. Tools for water quality monitoring and mapping using paper-based sensors and cell phones

10. Smart phone based immunosensor for detection malaria, fever etc

All these are research needed in both developed and developing countries and will require both electrical and computer engineering skills which you already have.

Best wishes!

This will depend on her interest and content of the program. So ask her what she is interested to work with, futuristic areas of research and solutions she wants to provide.

With my scanty knowledge of that field “measurement and evaluation”...I believe this field is significantly based on psychology and psychoanalysis.

Why not go for “Phd In educational management and statistics” or Phd in Measurements, planning and statistics”. This has elements of math combined auctural science with art and management...

Let others also comment!

Pardon me to say this: not that i am discouraging anyone, it is hard in Nigeria to get funds for research, everything is politics. Moreso, we have or no platform to do thorough research. I can tell you that almost all PhD students in Nigeria struggle on their own to get their studies going, no industry and school relationship. Even tools for numerical analysis is lacking. That's a nice idea and suggestion. I am currently co-supervising Master and PhD students with some academics in Nigeria and I can attest that there are many things that need to be done for foreign-based Nigerian to find the academic back home attractive.

Some of the few things that are lacking or personally I think can be or must be improved:

1. The salary of academics must be increased substantially. As far as am concerned, I earn far far far far than Nigerian Professors for now. The monthly salary of a professor must be bigger than a senator salary and PhD holder must earn far higher than Chairman or house of assembly members.

2. Academic merit systems must be established to encourage emerging and academic focus researchers

3. Academic promotions must be based on the academic output (Research, International Publications in SCI/SCI-E journals, Modern Teaching and academic mentorship)......Academic promotion in Nigeria is significantly based on a number of years even if the academic is not productive (this is backward).

4. National Research funding, Industrial and University-based funding of research should be established.

5. Employment and promotion should not be based on ethnic or tribal since everybody is Nigerian.

6. University must invest and subscribe to the major publication outlets so the staffs can have access to current publications

7. Conference funding and Publication monetary award must be encouraged and established

8. The system of supervision is very obsolete where a PhD last 6-13 years is more like craze.

9. Majority of research analyses are done abroad. Hence, investment in pieces of equipment and devices is largely needed.

10. Industrial PhD and masters need to be encouraged.

You cant imagine someone earning roughly 2 mill nairas monthly or have project funds bigger than Nigerian senators with various research facilities to return to earn 350 k naira...In the end, such Professors that will start asking for sex for marks or start selling questions/handouts. ...Am just saying oooooooo!

Even, by parento distribution, less than 5% will go out, and 95% or less will remain. Government should keep up from slumbering.

RESEARCH FUNDING

Getting Funding is not easy but is very very possible. Applying for a research grant can be a long and painful process and there are no guarantees it will end in success. The useful tips shared below could prove just the boost you need to secure financial support.

This will largely depend on your academic profile, nature of research, type of solution your research will provide, who will benefit from the research, is the research nationalistic or of international usage, how easy and practicable the research can be reproduced, does it have commercial value? The experience of the investigator, the innovation and significance of the research outputs.

You can access one of the resources here: https://researcheracademy.elsevier.com/research-preparation/funding/successful-research-grant-applications-getting-right

Also, you can write a grant and I can advise and mentor!

Best wishes

Let's all wake up off this complains of government. The lack of industry - academic relationship is the major challenge we're facing. Institutions in the country are not patriotic towards creating funds that will help our local institutions research on areas that will help the institutions, the academics and the nation at large.

Also, some of our institutions and staff like UI, Unilag and Covenant are also accessing research grants from foreign institutions. So Prof can still come back to Nigeria and he will still have access to the grants.

Regarding phase change and reactive transport research: Due to the world demand of alternative energy and energy storage materials, I think the research may be directed towards that.

You may find some of these very interesting:

Increasing thermal conductivity of phase change materials based on nanocomposites for energy storage

The efficient use of energy and sustainable development has become one of the urgent tasks for human beings with the rapid economic and industrial development due to the increasingly serious energy crisis and greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, the development of efficient energy storage devices and systems is essential for improving energy efficiency and reducing the gap between energy demand and energy production.
Phase change materials have been widely used as efficient materials in latent heat thermal storage systems for various applications, particularly, it has been the focus for renewable energy saving especially solar energy storage. However, the poor thermal conductivity of most organic phase change materials has long been considered as one of the big obstacles hindering their practical applications.

So in this research, you can synthesize various nanomaterials/nanocomposites that can act as efficient nanofillers to improve the thermal conductivity of organic phase change materials. The enhanced material will be very useful in solar air heaters, solar cells and electronic materials especially if you prepare it in film form.

I really appreciate your response. I think, CO2 (CO2 storage or conversion) will likely be good one for me, because I am looking at reservoir or underwater pipelines problem and its solutions. Thank you sir.
Re: Thread For PHD Students by wip7: 4:50pm On Jun 17, 2018
Interested to research any of these or you have a suggestion:

For PhD or Master students interested in working in any of these fields or have a suggestion can contact, I can guide the students, assist with material characterization and publication in reputable journals.

Unfortunately, I have busy schedules and I travel a lot. Hence, only serious-minded and academically active researchers will be accommodated.

Also, for those that have PhD and want to do 1 year Post training, I can guide on securing a fund to do that in Turkey or Canada, Unfortunately, this has age limit of 35 years and quality of CV (publication is a yardstick).

1. Wastewater treatment

2. Nanomaterial synthesis

3. Sensor development

4. Battery and supercapacitor fabrication

5. Bioelectricity generation

6. Targeted Drug release and control release system

7. Synthesis of polymeric materials for various application including biomedical and antimicrobial.

8. Synthesis of functional nano fluids for energy storage

9. Biocementation using various microorganisms.

Take note:

I am also quite good with Programming and have expert skills with Python, Wolfram language, JS etc and various scientific computing such as DOE etc.

For those interested in robotics and smart home automation, smart device fabrication, I am versatile with Raspberry and Arduino for basic and commercial ready products.
