The United States received more asylum requests than any other developed nation in 2017, overtaking Germany, new figures show. Asylum requests went up 26 percent in the US to 330,000 last year, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development said in its annual International Migration Outlook. Germany, which had topped the ranking since 2013, meanwhile saw a 73 percent drop in applications to 198,000 as the massive influx to Europe across the Mediterranean has slowed, the report said. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5864807/US-asylum-seekers-destination-OECD-2017.html

The report was released as President Donald Trump faces a criticism over his administration's practice of separating migrant children from their parents on the US-Mexico border. The United Nations has slammed the separation practice as unconscionable, while Amnesty International blasted it as 'nothing short of torture.' A view from Mexico of the US Customs and Boarder Protection is housing underage people caught illegally entering the United States at the Tornillo Port of Entry in Guadalupe Bravos. Immigrant children are led by staff in single file between tents at a detention facility next to the Mexican border in Tornillo, Texas. US Border Patrol agents patrol the bed of the Rio Grand in front of where the US Customs and Boarder Protection is housing underage people.

The rescue ship carrying 629 migrants which has been left stranded in the Mediterranean for two days dock in the Spanish city of Valencia. The Aquarius rescued hundreds of migrants, including 134 children and seven pregnant women, trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya on Saturday, but ended up adrift off the coast of Sicily as both Italy and Malta refused to let it dock.

Running to the US won't solve the problems of these people totally. The governments of their countries have got to step up and work towards the development of their countries too. I don't blame Trump much though. The US cannot take more than it can afford na. |

Let's even put Trump aside, the numbers are just not sustainable and another solution needs to be found closer to home. I don't claim to have all the answers but I strongly believe maybe working with the South American countries in one form or the other is key maybe to improve the economic situation and security even though that creates it's own set of challenges. I agree there are many issues in many of these countries but the solution is not for everyone to move to the US or Canada or Germany. It's also interesting that in these conversations the governments of Mexico, El Salvador etc are not called to account in any way and the focus is all on US Canada etc. skarlett: |

Wow! These numbers will distablize any economy. Imagine people trouping in hundreds of thousand into another country. Some will be sick without money. The country will be forced to treat them free. The pregnant women will need to access urgent medical care (most times without a dime). They'll provide shelther, feeding, sometimes clothings etc. The labour market will be congested. Many will be jobless and will be forced into doing illegal things to survive. Security of the local people becomes a threat. The good roads you see, the portable water, electricity, medical facilities etc For all these, the government uses tax payers money to build and maintain. And you come empty to enjoy it free. Hewww, Lawd! I really don't blame Trump. |
