I also got 10k from UNILORIN after graduating as Best student in my Department. The real deal is not the money but the fact that it keeps making my CV attractive to organisations. Thank God, Look beyond the paltry sum and celebrate ur achievement. The Award will distinguish u in the labour market. It's not all about money

It is an award by an individual not the school. Nothing unusual.

However, if I was the one, I would not go the stress to get the money. Just include the achievement on my CV.

BBN was sponsored by private firms desiring to make money not for philanthropic purposes. Two different cases. You can't tell a private individual/firm how to spend his/their money.

You do not become the best graduating student because you want to be "dashed" money. Not done anywhere. It is the prerogative of anyone to give you an award not an obligation.
Your comment is interesting. So if i walk up to you and give you Five naira as a gift you wouldn't see it as an insult since it is not your right?

This is why we are so backward. Our institutions of learning do not have the courage to encourage the best. The government and the ministries dont care. After 4 to 6 years the devalued students will be caged in poorly equipped camps for weeks then released to waste more time on nothing instead of research and development of our country.
Nigeria full of lazy leaders with no idea at all what to do for society.

I guess so. I got a certificate of recognition during my NYSC days for building an FM station in Ilorin camp in the early 90s. Though the NYSC eventually sponsored the project so I got some financial reward later.

The last I checked, in saner climes, nobody dashes money to the best graduating student. He gets a certificate and a handshake and that is that, he could also get job offers from companies that wish to recruit

It speaks poorly of our educational system, that so-called graduates think that a Best Graduating Student should get monetary gifts. So many ignorant people in this country, venting over the wrong things

Three things are involved:

1, I do not have the right to tell you how to spend your money.

2, I have the right to decline your gift if I desire.

3, There is no place where students MUST be paid for performing well in school. Your performance is for you and warrants no reward as a MUST except on benevolent grounds by an individual/authority - which is their right to give or not.

Precisely.

The nest graduating student, unless he/she is pretty dumb, is set on his /her way for much better things than a prize.

Whatever is worth doing is worth doing well, the student is not entitled to any monetary reward. If someone gives me five naira as a gift i may be tempted to curse the person because i did not beg you for it neither am i entitled to anything bigger. You just don't come around someone to ridicule the person. If i come to your wedding and present a plastic spoon of N50 as a gift how will you see it? Only give to people what is reasonable. Don't you know some gifts are a mockery to one's destiny?

Let's see it this way: There is an award in place that rewards a student who performs excellently in a particular course or general and they decided to invest 2K on the winner.

My take:

1, It is their money.

2, They have the right to invest any amount of money for an award. E.g. We have scholarships that pay 1 thousand pounds per annum (which is not enough for someone) to PG students, but people still jostle for it. You might not like it, but that is the scholarship body can afford.

3, S/He (student) reserves the right to accept it or decline.

4, It is not obligatory to "dash" a student money because s/he performed well in school. It is an optional decision.

What should be encouraged is people giving to the school and sponsor not berating folks for the amount of money they decide to donate.

Don't come here and form learned. That award is shameful. I wouldn't give a primary school pupil that award.

Actually, he was not 'forming learned'; HE IS LEARNED.

The objective of that award may not be anything monetary because I don't see that. Good people in a better person see things that the younger generation cannot see; and so, do things which objectives may not be understood by the younger generation at that point in time.

A good research will convince you.

We students should stop following the crowd; carve out a niche for yourself. I never heard, seen or read any of the principles(whether formal or informal) of success and/or prosperity to be inherent in public opinions; instead, it is always personal.

Your reasoning is illogical when compared to the point(s) he made.
Many of the people ranting on this topic spent their money watching and voting on BBNaija. Don't you think they should have cast those monetary votes on educational platforms?

Seconded... Bro... That's why I left, and I'm doing honestly better than 60% of graduates in Nigeria.

Thank God you said better than 60%(though I doubt your statistics), but not 100%. Even if your statistics is right, why are the other 40% better than you through a platform of scam, in this case education, as you supported?

The simple truth is you either found what you are better/best in or you changed your method of approach. If not, success in that path wouldn't have been possible.

If you really want to know, then it will be best if you do a comprehensive study to find out yourself. If not, whatever you may be told in support of this by individuals will remain a theory and not a fact to you.

The truth is that the message, I suppose, you are referring to has been over-stretched on an unbalanced pedestal. If everyone should flow in that angle, the society will be uninhabitable for everyone.
