Unisex share and rent apartments together including some university hall, it's not like the UK is Saudi Arabia where it is haram. Even PG halls in Nigeria unis have unisex hostels. Interns in health programs share same apartments offered by Government hospitals.

The arrested criminal should have insisted he was offering his room for sex instead of raping a traveler and betraying the trust.

I will be surprised if she made any payment, either by way of a deposit prior to the tenancy starting or afterwards. In addition, she slept there all night, only to report at the police station the next day, when you have a phone at hand to call for help and possibly sleep on the benches or pay handsomely at a motel / inn. There was cold-blooded calculation on her part.

You also have to factor in certain generational or cultural slants.
