Cucumbers are water filled pod like fruits that grow on vines. The leaves of cucumber plants are broad. Cucumber plants start producing fruits after 40-60 days of sowing of their seeds. Do you know that excess application of nitrogen especially nitrates can ruin your chances of making money from cucumber farming. Excess nitrogen makes the leaves of your cucumbers big and very soft. Fungi hyphae will be able to penetrate the cells easily. Excess nitrogen is also an invitation card to all manners of destructive insects and diseases. As beneficial nitrogen is to plants, it can also be very destructive is used without caution. Some humates like humic acid and fluvic acid can reduce the harmful effects of excess nitrogen. |

Why do some cucumber farmers harvest 300-500 bags (45kg) of cucumbers per acre while you harvest just few bags? |

Downy Mildew is one of the most devastating diseases of cucumbers in Nigeria. It is not caused by fungi as erroneously assumed, it is caused by oomycetes. There are things you can do to significantly reduce the incidences of Downy Mildew. |

For organic farmers, do you know that neem oil, black soap, fermented cow urine and ghost pepper (or any very hot pepper) can serve as a good insecticide and fungicide? |

thirtybillion A farmer once said he applied pesticide once and it worked like magic but after subsequent application, the pesticide become ineffective. How can one deal with such situation where pests develop resistance to your pesticide? |

You need to use different types of pesticides. Interchange them and do not solely depend on one. Also, use the recommended dosage. Pests hardly get resistant to organic pesticides though. |

Do you know that you can improve the efficiency of pesticides by tinkering with their pH? Some pesticides perform better if you amend their pH. Most manufacturers will not tell you this. |

Know your market well, some markets prefer the dark green cucumbers while others like the light green cucumbers. |
