A chat between a mother whose son is on life support and her boss has led to a debate on social media.

The mother sent a message to her boss explaining she couldn't come to work because her child is on life support. But the boss said that was no excuse to miss work and warned her she will be sacked if she doesn't show up to work the following day.

The chat was met with mixed reactions by social media users. Some said the boss was just being professional and it's wrong for the mother to let another person's business suffer because of her personal issue. While others said the boss was wrong to have reacted the way she did.

I know a lot of people would have different opinion about the matter, but in this situation, I would allow Justice and Equity to guide me in making any decisions as the boss.

I think what the boss meant was that the son is already receiving the best of care and attention, hence no need for the mother to be with him for a long stretch of time.

But all the same, it's an insensitive statement.

As painful as it may seem, the boss is right anyways!

How will she get money to pay for the hospital bills if she doesn't go to work. The son is being taking care of in the hospital. What difference will she make if she stays in the hospital with him? Is she the doc or the nurse?

I know some emotional people will support her, but hey.........how do you pay bills if you don't work?

Right or wrong, the employer is only protecting her business interests.

BUT

A mother's heart is with her child. She knows the condition the child is, hence her plea for understanding from her boss.

Since the boss is having none of it, let her face front. She'll get help I know.

The mom actually sounded condescending and entitled. A simple apology for her continued absence from work could have melted the boss's heart. Businesses are not run on emotions, sorry to say. Her son is on life support, there's nothing she can do for him other than sitting there and watching him sleep. Why not while away time by getting some work done, it will even help clear her head a bit. This might sound cold but I'm with the boss on this one.

You're right yeah.

But you know people are wired differently. She wears the shoes and knows where it hurts most.

The boss is in the clear.

She (mom) has played the sentiments card and I see her getting lotsa help.

The man can have the luxury of going to work while his son or daughter is sick. Because the wife will be there. But not so with the woman... It is completely different.

Truly, I see nothing wrong there, there's a business that survives on staff working to make money and someone decides to stop working indefinitely

The tone the woman used is definitely emotional blackmail, she should make the choice between her son and her job.
At least she should have been more polite and even suggested leave without pay or half pay.

If I'm the employer and you approach me in a mature way, best I would do is leave on half pay

I see people using their brains here and asking the necessary questions.

My own question here is; how does Buhari continue to hold the office of the President whenever he goes on life support in the UK, and yet we allow him?

I hate people feeling entitled. Her tone is actually condescending, more like the boss owes her for the child on life support.

I am with the boss on this

We always look for excuses to justify our actions. She should have brothers or sisters or even friends or church members that could help stay with her son till she closes and meet up with them.

If you set your heart to get something done, you will do it. It's the will. Life's hard......you just have to be strong and fight your way through!

I feel her pain though.......but work has to go on!

I understand the emotions and I never said life wasn't important!
Let's look at it this way: What exactly will she be doing in the hospital, when the son was already on life support? She will probably sit there mopping and crying or something!

The situation doesn't look like it happened in Nigeria where patients are not well taken care of. Probably happened abroad...USA or so, where medics take good care of patients! The nurses will look after him well and the doc will attend to him appropriately.

We need to drop emotions and be factual!

And what will she be able to do in her office with such an emotional state? Besides, there are a big if in your statement.

Besides, what is the current state of health of the child? There are so many big if in your statement which does not account for the situation in ground

Hmmmm....
First of I will say the boss is kind hearted n pays attention to details so well and that's a plus to the boss. If it where some bosses they won't talk further with you at the end of the day they will do what they so wish.

I wonder what the ill-behaved woman is feeling like, entitled or some sort of right-flexing. She's even on a shifting job, why then complain whereas your colleagues can cover for u in some time frame while u stay away (like if the work is for 8hrs) u can do just 5 while ur colleague cover the remaining for you, rather she chose to trade words with her boss like it's her fathers company or something.

Imagine every other person's have someone sick and displays similar attitude how then will the company cope and pay her staff and still remain afloat.

Where I did my IT wayback in school days, I was hospitalized for two weeks sent a message to my boss with the doctor's report and stuffs, my boss just replied "get well soon, cheers" (wondered what was cheering about the matter)knowing fully well biz ain't for sentiments and emotions I went further to enquire if I'm given a break or leave the man just say I should get well soon, that they are praying for me(Lolz) when I resumed work this white dude slashed off the two weeks in my salary(I weak) argue till tomorrow the fact remains that business that's profit oriented don't bring in emotions, sentiment or entitlements. If u will be off for awhile go for leave, break or quit then be in to take responsibility for your action regardless.

Then she should quit the job and pursue her son's life.

We are too emotional and sentimental in this country...someone's business is on the line...a business that provides daily bread for hundreds of people..how will her employee pay his bills if she doesn't work?...she even sounds authoritative and needy.

She wouldn’t be emotionally stable at work. What if things get messed up because she couldn’t concentrate? Come on...that child means more to her than the job. What if she has no one to keep an eye on the child and follow up with the nurses? No husband, no friend, no relative? I don’t know her story. I can’t judge her.

I had an accident May this year on my way to work. My husband was driving on the freeway and we lost control at a ramp. After the accident, while waiting for the ambulance, I called my boss to give him heads-up and he asked if I could walk, I said ‘yes’. He told me to get Uber and get my asss off to work, as a client was waiting for me and was getting impatient. Such a mean selfish creature!

This is sad.
Nobody plans to fall sick and when it happens, it is no one's fault.
We should learn to be human beings first before anything else.

The importance of life depends on the emotional connection of the life about to be lost, wetin concern the companies clients with a workers kid... Such is life, what if she's a surgeon and her absence can mean loss of lives
