There are quite a few valid reasons for asylum: persecution from drug cartels and cults, gay rights, terrorism, dislocation due to natural disasters, etc. Turning away people without even asking what brought them would be cruel, for those without valid or with fraudulent reasons that will be quite justified IMO.

I'm OK. Actually don't particularly care about who gets picked.

Asylum seekers are usually desperate and in dire straits, it's not easy to abandon all you know and go to a place you are not sure you are welcome. The asylum process itself is not an easy one and you get kept in semi prison for the duration. I have heard people stay in that Limbo for up to 2yrs or more, that's 2yrs of your life not going forward or backward with no certainty of outcome. People shouldn't imagine its a walk in the park or that you'll be fed KFC.
