Football is all about love and passion and the technology sector is not left out. They also have love for the game and that is why I have taken my time to compile a list of major phone brands in Nigeria and the football clubs they support or have sponsored at one time or the other. Some of these phone companies have great love for football teams, some secretly admiring their favorite teams while others have gone ahead to sign multi million pounds sponsorship deals with their favorite clubs. Football is the world’s biggest sport and is watched by billions of people. There’s no better way of showcasing your brand than getting into a sponsorship deal with a football team and some of these phone giants have done just that ! Note that some of these sponsorship arrangements have elapsed but that doesn’t mean we should kick them off our list, the beauty of it is that they enjoyed good relationship with their football teams while it lasted. It’s really good to see football and technology going into partnership.

Manchester City and TECNO MOBILE:

Manchester City Club and current champions of English premiere league launched its global partnership at the City Football Academy on Wednesday 30 November of 2016, which signaled the start of a multi-year agreement with TECNO Mobile. This premium mobile brand became the Official Tablet and Handset Partner with Manchester City Football Club. TECNO is Nigeria’s most loved phone brand and highest selling phone in Nigeria.

“We are delighted to welcome TECNO Mobile to Manchester City’s growing repertoire of global partners. Its global focus coupled with a commitment to each of its local markets reflects our ethos and we look forward to working with them to connect with Manchester City’s global fan base” said City Football Group’s Chief Commercial Officer, Tom Glick.

During the first year of the partnership, TECNO Mobile unveiled its Camon CX MCFC (Manchester City Football Club) Limited Edition, to further celebrate its partnership with the English Premier League’s club.
TECNO Camon CX flagship is the latest in a line of photo-focused smartphones of the TECNO CAMON series; best known for their premium camera upgrades and pocket friendly price tag. The Camon CX MCFC Limited Edition is in City Blue body with the official crest of MCFC on its rear.

2. OPPO and FC BARCELONA

FC Barcelona and smartphone top Chinese phone manufacturer OPPO made official the sponsorship agreement that they signed around 2014/2015 season. The agreement is the largest investment ever made by a Chinese company for sponsorship of a European football club at the time.

At a press conference held in the Hotel Renaissance Beijing Wangfujing, the Club’s official sponsor unveiled the FC Barcelona Edition of the R7 Plus, which has been created to celebrate the three-year deal with the football club just the same way TECNO made the CAMON CX Man City edition to celebrate the partnership. The sponsorship may have expired but the love still stands.

3. SAMSUNG and Chelsea FC

Chelsea completed the biggest club sponsorship deal in English football as they announced a five-year contract with electronics firm Samsung worth just over £50m. Of course the SAMSUNG logo appeared on the shirts for the club’s centenary season.

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon declared: “We are absolutely delighted to have Samsung Electronics as our new official club sponsor. It was the biggest sponsorship deal in the EPL at the time worth around 50 million Pounds. This deal made SAMSUNG one of the most loved brands in the UK, however SAMSUNG ended the sponsorship deal as a way of cutting it’s expenses and Chelsea signed a more lucrative deal with YOKOHAMA.

4. BLU and VALENCIA

BLU is not exactly a popular brand in Nigeria but I still see their products in the Nigerian smartphone market. The meaning of BLU is “BOLD LIKE US”. BLÜ Products is an American consumer electronics company founded in 2009 and headquartered in Miami, Florida. The company designs re-branded, low-cost mobile devices, and primarily sells smartphones that run on Android software. On the 30th of May, Valencia CF officially announced the name of their new main global sponsor for next season: BLU Products, a multinational from the technology sector, whose headquarters are located in Miami (USA).

The relationship between BLU Products and Valencia CF was unveiled in an innovative way at an event held at Valencia’s City of Arts and Science’s Oceanographic Auditorium, where the Club’s new adidas kits for the upcoming season were unveiled to an audience of over 400 guests and members of the media.

5. InnJoo and RCD Espanyol

I don’t know what happened to the InnJoo brand in Nigeria, it used to be among the top selling brands back in 2014/2015 but we hardly here about them anymore. Looks like they’re pretty popular in Spain as they signed a sponsorship deal with RCD Espanyol which finished 11th in the just concluded La Liga season. The partnership was for the 2016/17 season.
Tim Chen, co-founder and CEO for InnJoo said, “I am a great fan of football game specially La Liga. And, when we decided to associate our brand, InnJoo we could easily identify ourselves with the Espanyol for its passion and spirit, as we also deliver the similar virtues with all our products. This partnership compliments both of us for the simple reason that we are both leaders in our games and always believe in winning.” InnJoo may not be popular anymore in Nigeria but it’s one of the fastest growing bands in Europe and The Middle East.
