Good morning house,
Please is it possible to start laying blocks for the first floor about four days after pouring concrete for the slab?
Yes it is, since the supports under it are still intact .

Hello house. Please how many bags of cement roughly will a septic tank (10ft x 8ft x 10ft) and soakaway (7ft x 7ft x 8ft) consume. This include the setting of the blocks, 4 pillars/columns, big beam in the middle and full casting. Many thanks.

I saw some discussion about window hoods in the last two pages, sharing some I am doing now in some sites....

This is the plaster thrown window hood, no form of precast required, just made by experienced workers.

When completed and painted, it will look like this........

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by spyder880(m): 9:46am On Jul 11, 2018
Then there's the pre cast window hoods.....

Re: General Topic Thread-To Discuss Anything And Everything in Building Construction by spyder880(m): 9:54am On Jul 11, 2018
If you live in a dusty area, the precast with lots of curves will be getting dirty often, making you repaint the house after some time.

This was also thrown by a plastering artisan. Not pre cast.

Architects in the house,

Please whats the difference between ARCON certificate and Architect Practicing Licences?

Ministry of Urban in PH is requesting for Architect Practicing Licences but my architect says he will get me ARCON certificate instead.

Thanks a lot ...I actually want something this simple. so it means it can be done while plastering? Do you think anyone who does plastering can do this?

Experienced plastering hands only, I've seen some horrible ones done by amateurs.

Rubbiish:
Advantage
*Saves cost ( if it is a duplex or high rise structure)
*Saves space

Disadvantage
*Low pressure for water supply
*Requires periodic maintenance to control water spillage on slab & walls
Sorry for bring this up again, I have always been curious about this, for me erecting a steel or concrete structure purposely for the tank is unsightly and I hate the idea with a passion.

I am starting a project soon and I plan on placing the tank on a slab above the bathroom, all designed into the building from scratch. The tank itself will have a 2 way safety valve and if an overflow occurs, the run off water will be directed into a concealed gutter etc.

I cannot over emphasize how much I hate to see standalone Water storage structures.

Nice one. The fashioned hood is very simple and basic. For some this fits the bill, deal done. But for me, I prefer the precast. It has character and displays craftsmanship that defines the building.

From your experience, what's your cost differential?

The precast is much more difficult to make as it entails careful working with cement and sand on the ground, allowing it to dry and then using concrete nails and binding wire to hang the cast. Due to this difference, about N1000.00 will add to the labor cost of doing precast, add another N500 to the cement and sand increase.

I've always admired Australian home designs. Most parts of Australia are just as hot and humid like Africa, so in my quest for a functional home design for retirement, a home with good flow, connectivity, airy and light, I had a look downunder Australia. I was so pleased.

The achitecture is so simple but versatile and modern. No gragragra and wasteful features and fixture like most Nigerian blend. No unnecessary Roman columns, expensive parapet. It's really the floor plans that I'm just in love with.

I've sampled some Australian floor plans for critique. From duplex down to four bedrooms, three bedrooms. What I like is the flow of the the whole house. The blend of the kitchen, dinning and living area. So one can be cooking and still engage with the family and then the master class is how this living area flows seemlessly to the Afresco, what we would normally build as a boring balcony. And then what they call the media room which is effectively a reception room for visitors. Yes, some of the plans attached my need minor adjustments according to personal way of life, but I think in the grand scheme of things, Australian floor plans are better suited for hot climate than our current design in Nigeria. Our homes are designed to depend on AC and fan too much. Too many dark areas with no natural light or even ventilation. I think our achitects can do better. What do you guys think?

Perhaps Australians don't have the same kind of security challenges that make Nigerians build prison yards for houses.

On the precast vs simple masonry design, I think a combination of both may look awesome. Precast on top and masonry finish on the sides and under. Some of the precasts are overkill sometimes.

So as a builder you advise to load a fresh slab after 3days, ok.
