Was The Holy Prophet Bewitched? by AlBaqir(m): 5:00pm On Jul 14, 2018
INTRODUCTION

There was an excerpted video from the lecture of Sheik Imran Eleha (Director of Daru na'im International school, Lagos) where he condemned the practice of Juju (a fetish, charm or amulet of West African people).

The Sheik in this lecture claimed the only way to avoid being influenced or affected by this magical power is never to engage in it at all. He said it's like a network connection from one end to the other, and that only those who engage in it can be affected by it from others who also practice it.

The video (in Yoruba language) can be access here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WDqDs3TeTio

Few days after this video went viral on the social media, another Sheik by the name Alfa Aribidesi with utmost respect called the attention of Sheik Imran Eleha to what he perceived as mistakes from the latter's lecture.

Sheik Aribidesi objected to the submission that only he who engage in charm can be affected by it. He submitted the fact that Prophet himself was a victim of charm evil effect when a man casted a magic spell on him.

This video of Alfa Aribidesi can be seen here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQYQawU7hJs

Like a chain of reaction, a young Sheik who seemed to be a student of Sheik Imran Eleha or his follower, also took to the social media to counter Sheik Aribidesi on what he submitted to counter Sheik Imran Eleha.

Both Sheik Aribidesi and the young Sheik (whom we know not his name) raised several issues and counter arguments; however, we simply want to limit ourselves to the magic part. Hence, the title of this article: Was the Prophet bewitched?

ALLEGATIONS

Sheik Aribidesi is of the opinion that Prophet was bewitched. This believe of him is rooted from few ahadith in Sahih Bukhari, Sahih Muslim,  Musnad Ahmad and other books which clearly stated that Prophet was bewitched.

On the other hand, the young Sheik counter Sheik Aderibisi in a very strange way. He is of the opinion that magic (سحر) spell though was casted upon the Prophet but did not had any effect on the Prophet rather what is "known" as "tubbu" (طب) was what affected the Prophet instead.  The young Sheik cited this hadith where "tubbu" (طب) and "matbub" (مطبوب - one affected by tubbu) were used instead of sihr (سحر):

Narrated `Aisha:

that Allah's Messenger (s) was affected by magic, so much that he used to think that he had done something which in fact, he did not do, and he invoked his Lord (for a remedy). Then (one day) he said, "O `Aisha!) Do you know that Allah has advised me as to the problem I consulted Him about?" `Aisha said, "O Allah's Messenger (s)! What's that?" He said, "Two men came to me and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet, and one of them asked his companion, 'What is wrong with this man?' The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic.'...

Sahih al-Bukhari 6391
https://sunnah.com/bukhari/80/86

The young Sheik's video can be seen here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbh5cmJuqzM

This young Sheik claimed that "tubbu" is far lower than "Sihr". And he claimed that had "Sihr" affected the Prophet, it would have killed the Prophet.

This young Sheik was able support his claims with the view of al-ma'lami al-Yamani
in his book titled "al-Anwar al-Kashifa" page 265.

OUR INVESTIGATION

First, what our young Sheik failed woefully to do (as he was trying to convince us) was to define what "sihr" and "tubbu" are, and how each works to make them differ from each other. He only claimed that "tubbu" is lower in effect than "sihr" and that had the latter affected the Prophet, he would have died.

Unfortunately, all his claims are baseless.

Second, our young Sheik again failed woefully to consider all the ahadith of different sigha (version) on the issue of Prophet being bewitched. Do not forget, the only hadith quoted and relied upon by this young Sheik only used the word "tubbu" and "matbub"; therefore, his claimed that "Sihr" did not affected the Prophet.

Now let us consider other ahadith. We only consider the relevant parts.

SIHR IS THE SAME AS TUBBU

1. Hadith one:

Narrated `Aisha:

"...(Prophet said)The one near my feet, asked the one near my head (pointing at me), 'What is wrong with this man? The latter replied, 'He is under the effect of magic (matbub - مَطْبُوبٌ‏) that is  (mashur -مَسْحُورًا) ..."

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6063
https://sunnah.com/bukhari/78/93

In this hadith, "tubbu" is said to be "Sihr"; that is, "matbub (one being affected by tubbu)" is the same thing as "mashur (one being affected by Sihr)".

2. Hadith two:

Narrated Aisha:

Allah's Messenger (s) was bewitched...

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5765
https://sunnah.com/bukhari/76/79

Here the word used is سحر "Sihr" as against "tubbu طب".

In short, these ahadith clearly give no difference between "Sihr" and "tubbu" on one hand, and "Mashur" and "Matbub" on the other hand.

EFFECT OF SIHR OR TUBBU

Third, what is the evil effect of "Sihr" and "Tubbu"? Our young Sheik claimed with no single evidence that "Sihr" kills. Meaning "Tubbu" doesn't.  That is ridiculous.

Anyway, the same hadith gives the effect of what affected the Prophet (Sihr or tubbu whatever the case may be). The hadith says:

Narrated `Aisha:

that Allah's Messenger (s) was affected by magic, so much that he used to think that he had done something which in fact, he did not do...

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6391
 https://sunnah.com/bukhari/80/86

 Narrated Aisha:

Magic was worked on Allah's Messenger (s) so that he used to think that he had sexual relations with his wives while he actually had not. Sufyan said: That is the hardest kind of magic (Sihr) as it has such an effect.

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 5765
https://sunnah.com/bukhari/76/79

Narrated `Aisha:

The Prophet (s) continued for such-and-such period imagining that he has slept (had sexual relations) with his wives, and in fact he did not.

Reference : Sahih al-Bukhari 6063
https://sunnah.com/bukhari/78/93

In short, these ahadith are saying Prophet was hallucinated (losing his senses). In fact, according to the same hadith in Musnad of Imam Ahmad, what sahih Bukhari put as "such-and-such period" was out to be six months. We seek Allah's refuge from such silly accusations to the Prophet.

QURAN GIVES THE EFFECT OF SIHR

First we need to define Sihr.

In the book, "180 questions enquiries about Islam", Ayatollah Makarim Shirazi writes:

According to the dictionary, magic has two meanings:

Deception, guile, sleight of hand and legerdemain; and according to the book Qamus al-Lughah, magic means 'to deceive'.

“All such things, the causes of which are invisible and mysterious.”

In Raghib's book al-Mufradat, which is devoted to analysing words appearing in the Qur’an, three meanings have been mentioned for it:

a. Deception and imaginations, which are devoid of reality - like sleight of hand.

b. Attracting the Satans by special means and seeking assistance from them.

And there is another meaning that some have been given to imagine and that is: It is possible to transform the essence and form of people or entities by certain means; for example, transforming man by means of it, into an animal. However, this kind is nothing more than mere fancy, and without an iota of reality.

EFFECT OF MAGIC

Studying the 51 instances of the usage of the word سحر (magic) and its derivatives in the chapters of the Noble Qur’an, such as Taha, Shu'ara, Yunus, A'raf, etc., in connection with the stories of the prophets Musa (a.s.), 'Isa (a.s.) and the Noble Prophet (S), we conclude that magic, according to the Qur’an, can be classified into two categories:

Those instances wherein the objective is deception, jugglery, sleight of hand and legerdemain and possesses no reality, as we read:

فَإِِذاَ حِبَالُهُمْ وَ عِصِيُّهُم يُخَيَّلُ إِِلَيهِ مِنْ سِحْرِهِمْ أَنَّهَا تَسْعَـى

“Then lo! their cords and their rods– it was imaged to him on account of their magic as if they were running.” (Taha Verse 66)

Another verse says:

“So when they cast, they deceived the people's eyes and frightened them, and they produced a
mighty enchantment.” (A'raf Verse 116)

From these verses it can be ascertained that magic does not possess any reality such that it could exert control over things, and leave an impact and influence upon them. Rather, it is jugglery of the magicians that gives the impression of magic. That is one get hallucinated or imagined what is not real.

From some other verses of the Qur’an it can be inferred that certain kinds of magic do yield an influence (al-Baqara:102).

In short, from Umm al-mumineen Aisha hadith, what she claimed that happened to the Prophet was exactly what Qur'an says in the case of the spell of Fir'aun's Magician. Qur'an NEVER used the word "tubbu" rather it consistently used "sihr". All these render the claims of our young Sheik null and void.

OUR POSITION ON THE HADITH

Interestingly, our young Sheik never believed "Sihr (magic)" could affect the Prophet. He beautifully submitted that "Sihr (magic)" is among the works of shaitan, and Qur'an says:

 Surah Al-Hijr, Verse 42:

Surely. as regards My servants, you have no authority, over them except those who follow you of the deviators."

This belief which we also share was what influenced our young Sheik to rather twisted what allegedly affected the Prophet as "tubbu" and not "Sihr". Even if he was right, was the effect of "tubbu" any better than "Sihr" and were the two not from handiwork of shaitan?

The fact is our young Sheik need to either believe in the Qur'an or the hadith of Sahih Bukhari.  The two can never be married together. As for us we do not believe in the said part of the hadith that "Sihr or tubbu" affected the Prophet for any period of time whatsoever. Our position is the above noble verse and similar verse.

LAST SHOT

Allah refer to whoever believed or accused the Prophet of being bewitched as misguided.

Surah Al-Isra, Verse 47 - 48:

We know best why it is they listen, when they listen to thee (O Muhammad); and when they meet in private conference, behold, the wicked say, "Ye follow none other than a man bewitched (mashur)!"

See what they liken you to! So they have gone astray and cannot find the way.

MISCONCEPTION

Some are of the opinion that if magic did or can not affected the Prophet, how come Allah revealed to him the muawidzatain (sura falaq and sura Nas) especially when one verse says:

 Surah Al-Falaq, Verse 4:

"And from the evil of those who blow on knots."

No doubt, blowing knot with certain incantations is a form of magic. Many scholars of Qur'an even tried their best to link the incident of Prophet being bewitched as the sabab nuzul (reason of revelation) of the muawidzatain. Unfortunately, there is absolutely no link.

The entire Qur'an was revealed for the guidance of mankind on the lip of Muhammad who teaches and purify us with it. Those suras were for the benefit of the Prophet's Ummah. Yes! Prophet led by example by constant recitation of those suwar but that does not meant he was affected by magic hence, the reason of revelation or recitation of the suwar. Prayer of the Prophet for himself is light upon light for him as he never get bored seeking refuge from his Lord or thanking or seeking forgiveness even if he has been assured of Allah's immunity.

We conclude this piece by commending our Sheik Abdulmajeed Imran Eleha for having the lion heart to dissuade people's mind away from Juju, magic etc. Indeed our environment has been plagued by this evil acts to the extent that people even justified this evil acts twisting Qur'an and ahadith.

Praise be to Allaah.
The hadeeth of magic against the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) is a saheeh hadeeth which was narrated by al-Bukhaari, Muslim and other imams of hadeeth. Ahl al-Sunnah accept this story and no one denies it except an innovator. There follows the text of the hadeeth, its source, its meaning and the refutation by the scholars of those who deny it.
It was narrated that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: A spell was put on the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) until he imagined that he had done a thing when he had not done it. One day he made du’aa’ then he said: “Do you know that Allaah has shown me in what lies my cure? Two men came to me and one of them sat at my head and the other at my feet. One of them said to the other, ‘What is ailing the man?’ He said: ‘He has been bewitched.’ He said: “Who has bewitched him?’ He said: ‘Labeed ibn al-A’sam.’ He said, ‘With what?’ He said: ‘With a comb, the hair that is stuck to it, and the skin of pollen of a male date palm. He said: ‘Where is it?’ He said, ‘In the well of Dharwaan.’” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) went out to the well, then he came back and said to ‘Aa’ishah when he came back: “Its date palms are like the heads of devils.” I said: “Did you take it out?” He said: “No. Allaah has healed me, and I feared that that might bring evil upon the people.” Then the well was filled in.
Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3268; Muslim, 2189.
'A comb
and the hairs stuck to it and.' The first one asked, 'Where is that?'
The other replied, '(That is) in the well of Dharwan.' " So
Allah's Apostle along with some of his companions went
there and came back saying, "O 'Aisha, the color of its
water is like the infusion of Henna leaves. The tops of
the date-palm trees near it are like the heads of the
devils." I asked. "O Allah's Apostle? Why did you not
show it (to the people)?" He said, "Since Allah cured me,
I disliked to let evil spread among the people." Then he
ordered that the well be filled up with earth
Al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
Al-Maazari said: The innovators rejected this hadeeth and claimed that it detracted from the status of Prophethood and cast aspersions upon it. They said: Everything that leads to that is false. And they said that accepting that meant that we could not be sure of the laws that he prescribed, because it is possible that he imagined that he was seeing Jibreel when he was not there, and that something had been revealed to him when nothing had been revealed. Al-Maazari said: All of this is to be rejected, because the evidence that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was truthful in what he conveyed from Allaah and that he was infallible in conveying it is well established. The miracles bear witness to his truthfulness and accepting something when there is evidence to the contrary is false. With regard to some worldly matters for which he was not sent and which have nothing to do with his message, then he was exposed to the same as all other human beings, such as sickness. It is not far-fetched to say that he could be made to imagine something with regard to worldly matters that was not true, whilst at the same time he was protected against such things with regard to matters of religion.
Some people said that what is meant by this hadeeth is that he (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) imagined that he had had intercourse with his wives when he had not done so. This is something that people frequently imagine in their dreams, so it is not far-fetched to say that he could have imagined that when he was awake.
I – Ibn Hajar – say: This is what is stated clearly in the report of Ibn ‘Uyaynah that is narrated by al-Bukhaari, which says: “until he thought that he had had intercourse with his wives when he had not done so.”
‘Iyaad said: Thus it is clear that the witchcraft prevailed over his body and physical faculties, not over his discernment and beliefs…
Al-Mahlab said: The protection of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) against the devils does not mean that they would not try to harm him. In al-Saheeh it is narrated that a devil wanted to spoil his prayer but Allaah protected him against him. The same applies to witchcraft; the harm that affected him did not have any impact on his conveying of the message, rather it was akin to any other kind of sickness that afflicted him, such as having difficulty in speaking or doing certain things, or experiencing illusions that did not last. Rather it passed and Allaah foiled the plots of the devils. End quote.
Fath al-Baari , 10/226, 227
Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said:
How the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was guided to treat the spell which Jews cast on him:
This has been denied by some people who said that this could not have happened to him, and they thought that it was a shortcoming and a fault. But it is not as they think, rather it comes under the heading of sickness and pain that befell him; it is a kind of illness which befell him just as he was also affected by poison – there is no difference between the two. It is proven in al-Saheehayn that ‘Aa’ishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) said: “The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) was bewitched until he thought that he had had intercourse with his wives when he had not done so, and that is the worst kind of witchcraft.” Al-Qaadi ‘Iyaad said: Witchcraft is a kind of sickness which happened to him like other kinds of sickness. That cannot be denied and it does not detract from his Prophethood.
With regard to his imagining that he had done something when he had not done it, that does not have any impact on his truthfulness, because of the evidence to that effect and the scholarly consensus that he was protected from that. Rather it was one of the matters of this world which are not the reason for which he was sent, and which are not the basis of his virtue and in which he was like all other human beings. It is not far-fetched to say that he might imagine some things that were not real, then things became clear to him later on, as indeed happened. End quote.
Zaad al-Ma’aad , 4/124
So it is clear that the hadeeth is saheeh, and that it does not detract from the status of Prophethood. Allaah, may He be glorified and exalted, protected His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and made him infallible before this spell was cast, during it and afterwards. The spell did no more than make the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) think that he had had intercourse with his wives when he had not done so; it had to do with a purely worldly matter, and had nothing to do with his conveying of the message at all. The words of the scholars quoted above are sufficient, and whoever wants to know more may refer to Fath al-Baari and Zaad al-Ma’aad .
And Allaah knows best

Qur'an clearly stated that whoever says Prophet is bewitched is misguided who cannot find way to the right path.

So, is Qur'an also "innovator" for this belief?

Alhajiemeritus, endeavor to read and digest thread before posting please.

Magic, witchcraft are from the works of shaitan. Ahlu Sunnah ahadith claimed Prophet was bewitched so much so that "he had no knowledge of what he was doing". His wife only cited an example that he used to hallucinating he had sex yet he does not.

# Sufyan in the hadith even claimed that is the worst form of witchcraft.

# Imam Ahmad in his Musnad documents Prophet was in that state for SIX MONTHS.

Qur'an clearly stated that Shaitan can not have power and domination over servants of Allah. Yet, these so called Ahlu Sunnah have audacity to label whoever believed The witchcraft never had ANY EFFECT on the Prophet as Innovators because that's an opposition to "Sahih hadith".

Do you guys think at all?

# The bold. Unlike Iyaad, Mahlabi seemed to give what allegedly happened to the Prophet. And to say the effect does not last is yet another cover up.

Even if you do not believe in the Qur'an which clearly stated that Shaitan's power can never have effect on servants of Allah; anyway, if Sahih Bukhari and other Sahih could claimed that Shaitan And his troops used to run away from Umar Ibn al-Khattab, then how are you satisfied that Shaitan disturbed or his magic worked on the Prophet?

The moment they believe that magic cannot and would never have an effect on any Prophet talkless The best of all the Prophets, the moment the foundation of what they believe in start to shatter.

I see no difference between the salafis and the jews/Christians who Astargfirullah, claim that Prophet Lut (a.s) got drunk, then slept with his daughters in order to continue his lineage...

But the Quran has this to say about them

I see no difference between the salafis and the jews/Christians who Astargfirullah, claim that Prophet Lut (a.s) got drunk, then slept with his daughters in order to continue his lineage...

But the Quran has this to say about them

"When it is said to them: Follow what Allah has sent down. They say: Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following. Would they do that! Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided?"

Where is it in Quran or hadith that nabiy luth slept with his daughter

you should rather focus on the main subject and intelligently contribute rather than shifting post.

Rosul was bewitched because Allah wants it to happen.. So, what's the big deal.

Whatever happens to rosul is a message to us..
.. If any Muslim is bewitched, just read what rosul read.. That's all...

Kii wa lo n confuse yin..

Oloshi Keferi Yahya yen.. Said rosul ate aseje, said rosul chant incantation before he got well.. Labeling rosul with kufru.. Oloshi eyan rederede... So that he can do his kufru jalabi very well..

You do not believe in rosul

You have your own hadith
Your imams are you god..

See Takfir, so Salafis in your eyes are the same with Christians and Jews? Why not add Hindus and Buddhists?

So a great prophet hallucinated. No wonder we read so many imaginary stories in the scriptures like riding on a flying creature to the most high. smiley

# That the Prophet was allegedly hallucinated, that has been refuted at the op. Don't be lazy to read.

# And you can hopefully understand his night journey to the heavens in light of quantum physics :

What he used as means of transportation was al-buruq from the word "barq" meaning light. Do you know the speed of light?

Lol, so there is horse-like or is it donkey-like creature in quantum physics?

Before Science discover quantum physics, what was the Muslims excuse, belief on this subject?

Even saying it's a speed of light, how did someone in semi ancient middle east was able to travel through the space-time, open a wormhole that leads to an imaginary heaven, ok this sound ridiculous.

Please do not derail this thread further. What authentic ahadith say is "al-buraq". It is an ancient brain like yours that tried to rationalized it as horse or donkey as that was means of transportation then.

Again, kindly respect the thread by staying on its subject. Thanks.

Lol, you're now insulting for what I didn't claim, the hadith clearly said the Buraq is a donkey-like creature!

Now that modern science discover the possibility of speed of light, some of our Muslim brothers find excuses in this because a flying donkey sound ridiculous. cheesy

We cannot travel at the speed of light talkless of someone in the ancient middle east doing so.

Abeg make I no derail the thread.

notice where she said his (saw) travel is a blink of getting up from bed or chair and sitting back down while the bed is still warm. This was described exactly like this by sheikh Aboto. It means time stopped for him considering events that took place during isra/miraj which means he travelled to another world of space and time.

Long hours of travel means nothing in that world of space and time compared to our biological time. It is equivalent to how Angels and Jinns travel. Long distance has no meaning to them.

We can't travel at speed of light and there are consequences like time dilation.

If we're able to travel at speed of light, the biological world must have already been millions-billions years after or cease to exist when coming back, it's better to just stick to the magical flying donkey part, that make more ridiculous sense.
