Tbh I don’t care if your Igbo or not. I’m just tying to pint out what they did wrong that provoked the counter coup. Why will the Igbo fame the ember of discord by killing ethnic leaders and not expect retaliation. It’s just nature that came into play and they should get over that singular act.

The issue here is that u still calling igbos as the person that led the coup and u been reminded that nzeogwu is not an Igbo man.

A keynote speech presented by Dr Chukwuma O. Nwaonicha at the Anioma Convention and Fundraiser, held from July 6-July 8, 2018 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
*His Excellency, Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Okowa, the Executive Governor of Delta State
* Our revered Anioma Traditional Rulers
*National President, Anioma Association, USA, INC
*Members of Anioma Association, USA
*Distinguished guests
*Members of the press
*All protocols duly observed.
My beloved Anioma brothers and sisters, it is a great delight and honor to be in your midst today, to deliver a keynote speech titled: "ANIOMA AND THE TRAGEDY OF IDENTITY CRISIS: ANYI BU NDI ANIOMA".
I want to start by first appreciating the National President of Anioma Association, USA, Dr. Edwin Obune, a worthy son of Abbi, in Ndokwa West Local Government of Delta State and the entire members of this noble association for this great re-awakening and clarion call to contribute towards the growth and development of Anioma. I say kudos to you all for identifying with your roots and place of origin irrespective of the comfort you all enjoy here in America.
The first question: It is good and important to begin this speech by asking; what is the meaning of Anioma and who are the people of Anioma?
Anioma is a vernacular word meaning, "good land". Its people are known as, Ndi or Umu Anioma (The children of Anioma). Anioma is strategically located in the West Basin of the River Niger. It is one of the three senatorial districts that make up the present Delta State, an oil rich State in the Niger Delta Region (South-South), Nigeria. The Anioma people occupy the Delta North Senatorial District of Delta State. It has nine local government areas, namely: Aniocha North, Aniocha South, Ika North East, Ika South, Ndokwa East, Ndokwa West, Oshimili North, Oshimili South and Ukwuani Local Government Areas.

Aniomas are not Igbos. this got me into some research and I discovered that anioma are conglomeration of different people groups, call it tribes if you may, which consists of Benis, Igalas, Igbos, Ishans, Urhobos, Isokos, Ijaws and Yorubas. These people have their various languages and dialects mixed up with little Igbo due to proximity to the East and the constant influx of the East in the Aniomaland till date. (Most of our farmlands are occupied by the Igbos in form of camps. Many have been there for ages). As the people mixed up through inter marriages, the original dialects of the people were compromised. Then the church came with the early missionaries by the way of the River Niger, and Anioma was home to them.
Both the Aniomas and all of the East have different dialects based on their migration. The church then instituted the "Central Igbo Language Bible" which cuts across the barriers except for the Aniomas whose primary language or first language was not Igbo.
As the missionaries plants churches and CMS schools, they began to teach the Aniomas Igbo language for effective communication and understanding of the bible. At the church schools, we were though ABCD as A, Bi, Gbi, Di. Then, they introduced the pastorship exchange program whereby converts from Anioma are sent to the East to pastor vice versa which got worse with the Pentecostal movement championed by the Igbos of the era who had fervently embraced Christianity. The Igbo gospel hits were all over the airwave with gospel artists like Herbert White, Voice of the Cross, Voice of Salvation etc. By so doing, the Aniomas continued to loose their language and dialects singing Igbo songs and reading the Igbo bible under an Igbo pastor.
A few days ago, I listened to a supposed Anioma song by an Issele Uku man with utmost dismay. While this music was played with the Anioma "apele or otulaka" the wordings were void of Anioma, Issele Uku dialect. It was more of Igbo accents than Anioma. That actually gave birth to this article as I cry for my people.
I fear an extinction of our dialects in the very near future. The core Anioma languages are fast evaporating. I continue to find myself use some words that the current generation does not know what I am talking about. This is puzzling.
Finally, Anioma is gradually migrating into the generation X kings who knows little or nothing about our language, culture or history. Some of them reside overseas. This further poses a threat to the Anioma. I therefore with due respect plead with all the Anioma kings to hold on to our God given culture, tradition, and language. Address your people in your dialects and not in English. Uphold our Anioma values. It is a gift from God.

Text of an Address Presented at the Anioma World Convention in Chicago, USA:
Copied
According to Godfrey C. Osakwe and Michael Brian Onyekali Odiakosa, the name, Anioma was coined from the alphabets of the first names of the aforementioned local government areas. A for Aniocha, N for Ndokwa, Ifor Ika and O for Oshimili. MA was added to form a complete meaning, "ANIOMA".
Anioma is a land endowed with both natural and human resources. It has produced many eminent and illustrious sons and daughters who have not only distinguished themselves in their different fields of endeavor but also, have contributed immensely to the growth and development of Delta State and Nigeria as a whole. Some of these eminent and illustrious sons and daughters of Anioma are the Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanye Okowa, the Chairman, Zenith Bank PLC, Mr. Jim Ovia, the Chairman, Heirs Holdings, Mr. Tony Elumelu, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor: Mr. Godwin Emefiele, theformer Minister of Finance, Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the CEO Rain Oil, Dr. Gabriel Ugbeche, Gen. Alabi Isama, retired, Real Admiral Mike Onah, retired, the Minister of State Petroleum, Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, Prof. Epitany Azinge, among other distinguished Anioma sons and daughters.
Today, we are proud to announce to the world, that one of these worthy sons of Anioma, Senator (Dr.) Ifeanyi Okowa is the executive governor of Delta State. Since his inauguration on May 29, 2015, Governor Okowa has been doing his best to move the entire state forward. He has been doing his best not to be a sectional governor. The speculation that the governor favors a particular senatorial district more than the other is not a fair judgment on him. We were aware of the activities of the Niger Delta Avengers, a group that almost crippled the economy of Delta State sometime ago with her continuous bombing of Oil facilities. So, Okowa's attachment with our brothers and sisters from Central and South senatorial districts was for a good reason but, that does not suggests that he favors them more. By and large Okowa is the governor of the entire Delta State and he will continue to serve the interest of all Deltans. As Anioma people, we should therefore be patient with our brother, give him our full support and above all, work towards his re-election in 2019 for he is not going to fail us. In short, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa deserves the support of the Anioma people, and indeed all Deltans for a second term in office as there is no alternative to the Governor in the 2019 gubernatorial election in Delta State. Governor Okowa has excelled in the areas of physical infrastructure development, empowerment of youths and women, job creation, promotion of peaceful co-existence and the floating of social welfare scheme for widows as well as the provision of efficient, quality and affordable health care delivery.
The Anioma people are peaceful, hardworking and accommodating. Besides Delta State, Anioma people can also be found in Igbanke, Ogan, Iru, Owa Nikeke, Ekpon and Abudu areas of Edo State, Onitsha, Obosi, Ogidi, Ozubulu and Orifite areas of Anambra State, Oguta area of Imo State and Ndoni area of Rivers State. The Anioma people are educated, industrious, innovative and exposed. The rich diverse and unique cultural heritage of the Anioma people distinguished them from other ethnic nationalities in Nigeria.
The second question: Are Anioma people Igbos?
There have been several debates about the true origin of the Anioma people and the language they speak. There is a strong belief that the Anioma people are Igbos and that they speak Igbo language. To keep the record straight, the Anioma people are not Igbos and they do not speak Igbo language. The Anioma people speak, "Enuani, Ika and Ukwuani languages". We are proud of our identity; our identity is our pride, strength and unifying factor. Our Anioma attire (Akwa Anioma) is recognized anywhere in the world. There may be similarities in some Anioma and Igbo names: such as Chukwuma, Chukwuka, Chukwudi, Ngozi, Udoka, among other names that have the same spellings, pronunciations and meanings like that of the Igbos but, the fact remains that we are not Igbos. We may also have some similarities in language that does not make us Igbo people.
The Aniocha and Oshimili though are closer to the Anambra people cannot be referred to as Igbo people. The same could be said of Owa people in Ika North East Local Government whose ancestral home is believed to be Nri, in Anambra State. The Ndokwa and Ukwuani areas are a mix of different peoples, some with a strong claim to Benin ancestry while others claim to different origin. The Abohs and some clans in the region claimed to have left Benin in the 16th century or earlier in the same wave of migration that established most of the Igbo speaking towns West of the Niger and even Onitcha in the East. Some sections of the Abohs believed that they are direct descendants of people from Benin while others look across the Niger into the Igbo hinterland as their origin, yet some even look far up the Niger, Igala as their ancestral home. The founder of Abbi, in Ndokwa West Local Government for instance, Amaha, the elders of Abbi are not sure of the location of his town but, it is believed to be in Eastern Nigeria. The Dein of Agbor Kingdom, His Royal Majesty Dr. Benjamin Ikenchuku Keagborekuzi I, in one of his recent meetings with his subjects at his palace called on them to stop promoting Igbo culture. He further advised that the Igbo red cap should also be dropped as it is not a native cap for Agbor Kingdom. The revered monarch's statement clearly gave credence to the fact that the Agbor people share the same ancestral history with the Benin people and not the Igbo people.
The third question: How do we promote and sustain our rich, diverse and unique cultural heritage?
We are proud of our heritage, history and background. We are unique people in the world. We should encourage those things that will help promote us culturally and also, cement our unity. We should learn how to project Anioma in whatever we do. The names of our children should always reflect our Anioma identity. Our Anioma traditional rulers should give more relevance to our festivals. The histories of the various Kingdoms in Anioma should be taught in schools. Above all, as Anioma people we should not allow our language to go into extinction. We should be teaching our children how to speak our native language in our various homes. Anioma is our land, our strength, our pride and center of unity. We should therefore, imbibe the character of showcasing and promoting the Anioma course anywhere we are in the world.
In promoting Anioma course, we should respect one another. There is strength in unity, as the saying goes; “united we stand, divided we fall”. We should not discriminate or quarrel among ourselves as we project this great course of Anioma nation. The Aniocha/
Oshimili man, the Ndokwa/Ukwuani man, and the Ika man, should see themselves as one. It is only when we work in one accord and in synergy that we will be able to achieve maximum result. Anioma is our home, we have no other place, hence, it is very necessary for us to stay united and build it to an enviable height. A height where even development could easily be achieved and a height where investors will be willing and ready to invest without any fear of insecurity.
In conclusion, we are Anioma people not Igbo people. We should be proud of our cultural heritage and background. I must say a big thank you to the National President and the entire members of Anioma Association, USA for the selfless works you are doing to move Anioma nation forward. I call on all Anioma sons and daughters in the United States of America to identify with this association for the overall benefit of all Anioma people. I am also using this medium to appeal to other Anioma associations or groups in Europe, Asia, South America and Africa to join efforts with Anioma Association, USA to build a better Anioma nation that we all will be proud of. Finally, please let us have a standing ovation for the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency Senator (Dr.) Ifeanye Okowa for the good work he is doing in pushing Delta State forward in terms of infrastructural development and say welcome to Chicago, Illinois.
Once again thank you all and God bless.
Dr. Chukwuma O. Nwaonicha.
