Na wa oo and here I am being denied for vanquis CC after doing a soft search both online and via the telephone. Will just settle for building credit history through paying my direct debit jare.

I believe that own should also have a great impact right?

you've not been resident in the UK for long, so lenders will access you as being too risky for credit facilities.

do you have a current account? if yes, use the account well (make sure its regularly funded with your salary payments/decent sums) for at least 6 months and then approach your bank for an overdraft of £200 -£300 (preferably in branch - ask to speak to a Relationship manager). use the overdraft every now and then. this is another easy way of building your credit history.

it is easier to obtain an overdraft than a credit card

building one's credit history/file takes time and patience and sometimes careful planning.

direct debit does not help build your credit history.

whch of the amex cards are you applying for? is it one of the platinum cards? the platinum card, gold card, etc have stricter eligibility criteria.

my application was straight forward (applied online) and I wasn't asked for additional info.

give it another 6 months and try again

Gold card bawo... I never reach that level o. Na the British Airways basic one... Can't remember the name now. After that I applied for the Costco one. I'm just going to leave it next year Jan. to reapply.

Good evening fam,

God willing, I passed my theory today. Thanks to everyone who contributed tips.

To the next stage, how much does the practice test cost and how soon can it be taken?

Ps: for anyone who cares to know how I did it. I downloaded the free apps and left them on my phone. Fiddled with it few minutes whenever I felt like. Then bought the full app a day to the exam and binge studied till late in the night. Fell asleep, woke up and continued till I got to the exam center.

Oh, I moved house 2 days to the exam. Point? It's an easy exam. Thanks to fatima04 et al.

Cheers!!

Use a 5-star reviewed Driving school/instructor, and i hate to be racist, but avoid Pakistani teachers or Asian teachers...in my experience they treat Nigerians like they're punishing us for our bad behaviour or like ATM machine or like we're stupid, except if the Asian instructor is 5-star reviewed....and if he has 1 star and self-reviewed himself with 5-star...definitely avoid!

I heard AA is highly recommended

Wait direct debit doesn’t build credit history? So paying back what I owe on my credit card through direct debit won’t imorove my credit history? I’m sorry I missed the gist, how am I meant to build my history..

Reviews is very important in choosing a school and I chose one based on that, however my teacher is pakistani and quite good, patient and understanding and doesn't smack my leg at all like one did for me in naija.

So basically research on good schools around before settling

I am sure he meant direct debit for bills not CC if you pay that on time I believe ur history is being built with that. All the best in your test.

Thanks Fati. So it’s not not good to pay direct debit for bills? Is it better to pay via phone then? Isn’t that risky giving them your card details?

Direct debit is fine for utilities but doesn't mean it necessarily contributes to ur Credit score

Paying by DD does not impact your credit history, has a means of paying your CC bills (you can still pay over the phone or at the bank).....

What contributes to your credit history, is that you are paying your CC bills.

DD payment simply ensures you don't forget to pay your CC bills, because missing that payment would adversely affect your credit history......

I have always been following this thread and continually find myself always coming back for updates cos Iam still hoping to join you guys if God allows:
My questions are these:
1. is there any any prospect for a relaxed tier 2 system (for engineers, technical and trades people) following the exclusion of NHS peeps from the monthly caps on tier 2 visas.
2.How effective are recruitment agencies in the recruitment of Engineering personnel from outside the UK.
3. Will Brexit favour non EEA recruitment and settlement in the UK.

If you watch Netflix you are still required to get a tv licence. I believe you can be fined £1,000 and even taken to court if you are found out. These days they have advanced equipment to detect if you have been watching tv , through pc, iPad etc. Just save yourself future agro and pay it.

Ok. They specified LIVE TVthough. Netflix isn’t live tv. The money isn’t much but I’d hate to pay for something I’m not using coz of fear. Been there done that.

Even iPlayer is not live but you still need a licence.

Do you like gambling? This is a form of gambling, you don't have to place bets literally. And also its about candour and setting a right example, Paying your TV tax.

Lol. I agree you should pay if you use it. I just feel most people rush to pay coz of fear not use. I want to be sure I’m paying for services consumed, which is why I’m interested in people that have actually dealt with them. On the phone or in person.

Updated: I called them and discussed the things we honestly watch and the adviser said we do not need to pay so our records have new updated. If things change il let them know. I have plenty other uses for £150smiley please if you are watching live tv or on demand shows pay oh.

Okay no problem , I stand corrected, every day we learn.

I've just googled it.

The Government's website explains that you must have a TV licence if you:
•watch or record programmes on a TV, computer or other device as they're broadcast;
•download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch-up or on demand.

You can be fined up to £1,000 if you watch or record live TV without a TV licence.

Do you need a TV licence to watch Netflix?

No. You only need a licence for watching or recording content as it's broadcast live on TV. If you’re streaming on-demand movies or TV shows on Netflix, YouTube or Amazon Instant Video (or any other online video service) you don't currently need a licence.

It is very unlikely that they will relax tier 2 system for non medical roles. Supply outside of the the NHS is plentiful and relaxing it will definitely distort the job market.
The two Scala Devs in my office came through Oxford Knight but they were already working in Germany, the QA lady came directly from India but can't remember which recruiter she used either third republic or hays specialist. You can check them out.
If they shut the door, then non EEA will have a better chance but that is unlikely at the moment.

They will definitely come and inspect your property. Before they knock on your door they will park as close as possible to the address, seat in the car and just 'observe'. After a few days they will knock on the door and that is likely to be in the evening or when it's obvious the TV is on.

The first thing they will check is if you have any TV box around the TV, then check if there is an aerial cable around your TV. If any of these two items are present, you will be fined 100% and would have to prove to the court that you are not using them.

If you have any of these items, get rid of the cable and remove the TV box. The best thing to do is NOT let them into your property under any circumstances.

If you do let them in, don't give them any information as they will probably just use that information to summon you to court anyway, those guys work for Capita and they are on target that comes with commission.

If you have Iplayer on ipad, you will likely get away with it until they tighten things up but be a good citizen and contribute to their coffers smiley

They have no advanced equipment to detect if one is watching TV or not. It was a con invented to scare people into paying up. They use their database of over 31 million addresses to check which ones do not have a licence and that is where the fun of them sending you letters start.

If you have ever received any form of letter from TV Licensing, you would notice that it follows a set pattern:
- Your address has no Licence registered to it
- We will be visiting you
- We have opened an investigation and will call at your address soon.. After this stage, they go back to the 1st letter and the cycle will go on.

Rule of thumb is to never allow them gain entrance into your house, do not reply their letters or call them for any reason at all. If you inadvertently open the door and it is one of their officers, DO NOT let them in no matter how polite the person(s) is(are). Do NOT give them your name either. They have no power to arrest neither do they have any power to forcibly enter your home.

After all said though, to pay TV Licence that goes into the coffers of BBC or not is a decision only you can make.
