What Should I Expect As An Accountant With No Experience? by vickertony(m): 8:02am On Aug 09, 2018
Greetings everyone,

Am a graduate of Accounting, I have not written ICAN tho and am currently serving, notwithstanding I want to start applying for jobs.

Anyone with experience? of what I should expect, what should I know? which particular skills should I have? , I never worked in an office before, I'm actually looking for a little job because am preparing for my MSc abroad.

I just need contributions & insights from anyone here, as a fresh graduate.

Experience and ICAN before Msc, you don't really need MSc much unless you are intending to go into Accounting academics, sit for your Ican and complete it asap. Ensure to apply for the big 4 graduate trainee programmes. If you cant make the big 4, there are decent medium sized accounting firms, the focuz is to build a foundation, If you don't have a good foundation, you may be a quack for life, so just take the pain now.

During your practice, you will learn several skills.

I understand you perfectly Boss, unfortunately I don't plan to work in Nigeria.

After service, I plan to migrate to the USA, hence I'm not that interested in writing ICAN.

Am not going into education tho, MSc is a stepping stone for my Career, I plan to minor in management information system after my undergraduate degree in Accounting
with a dream career as an IT Auditor or Business Analyst.

I just want to know what you think I should know incase I
get a job in an office here, maybe small firm not the big four, what will such firm expect I should know?

what accounting softwares should I be proficient with, things like that.

We didn't do IT during my university days, so I don't have any experience working in an office yet.

Stop deceiving those that wants to go for Msc.Its not only for teaching prospects.Better jobs nowadays will specify Msc as the minimum requirements. Bsc is for graduate trainees that they will use as contract staff and pay less than 80k.Msc is a research programme. Which org doesn't need researchers?

Madam kindly read and understand. I'm sure you are a graduate. I never said Msc is for only teaching prospect; all I'm saying is that as an accounting professional your professional qualification like ICAN and ACCA is more important, infact completing the ACCA qualification is equivalent to having an Msc in a UK university (see pic of my letter of equivalence after qualifying under ACCA)

You do not sound like an accountant, so I believe you shouldn't be commenting here because even the Big 4 accounting firms do not put an Msc as part of their recruitment criteria for Trainees and Experienced Hires (It is of lesser importance than professional qualifications). Also isn't it clear that the OP is still a fresh graduate? There is hardly any company that will require a fresh graduate to have an MSC.

Again OP, as an accounting professional, getting accounting professional qualifications is more important than academic qualifications. I entered into a good accounting firm with a Bsc above those that applied with Msc because of the stage of ACCA I was. Even as an experienced accounting professional, I still dont plan on doing Msc yet, MBA will come first if at all cos I am in the professional world, not academics.

I entered into my firm with little or no understanding of Microsoft Excel (very important for accountants) not to talk of accounting softwares. In most cases, for a trainee position no one expects too much from you, just learn on the job as quickly as possible.

However, to ease your job and increase your marketability, I suggest you watch videos of how to use excel on youtube (at least for the basic functions and formulars), later on you can progress to advanced excel tutorials. Also try to learn populat accounting softwares like Sage 50, Quickbooks.. etc, just to give you an understanding of how accounting system works.

Finally and more importantly; be very good at the basics: Ensure you are very confident with double entry principles of accounting and that you are familiar with basic accounting standards (e.g IAS 16, IAS 2, IAS 10). It's not uncommon for trainees to be tested on basic accounting standards in interviews. Be sure to sharpen your analytical skills by solving professional exam questions (I suggest ACCA study packs).

With this you will be fine to start well in any accounting firm.

Hei,I have written skills level in ICAN.will be through with my course work for Msc by September. An Accountant can qualify for as a certified accountant as well as adding Msc to it.Lawyers go to law school and get certified. They still pursue LLM.If a fellow wants both, they can get it.The first place I worked after graduation in an accounting firm.Msc is good as well as professional certification. The most important thing is he didn't dump his prospects for more knowledge.
