Eddie Nawgu (born Edwin Okeke) was a Nigerian self-proclaimed "prophet of God" and Occult practitioner.[1] He was popularly known in the mid-1990s as "Eddy Nawgu" amongst the igbo speaking people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.[2] His nickname "Eddie na Nawgu" came about because he was from the Nawgu community, a town situated in the Dunukofia LGA of Anambra State, Nigeria.

Early life
He was born in Anambra State which is located in the eastern region of Nigeria, a geographical location and settlement inhabited predominantly by the Igbo speaking people of Nigeria.[3][4]

Ministry
At the young age of 29, Eddie "Nawgu" Okeke claimed he had been touched by the Biblical God and was given the ability to "see" and "perceive" what the ordinary human eye or other four senses could not intercept,[5] shortly after he began his ministry, he built a church-like structure and named it 'Anioma Healing Centre' [6] he stated that the reasons for creating the 'Anioma Healing Centre' was to heal the sick people in the community and restore hope to people who had thought previously that their existence on earth was meaningless and was without bearing. The physical location of the 'Anioma Healing Center' was at his compound in his community at Nawgu, Anambra State.[7]

Recognition
During the mid-1990s in Onitsha, Anambra State, Eddie Nawgu had started to grow famous,[4][6] as he had some how managed to gather a good percentage of the community as followers, who thought of him as a charismatic religious leader and also it seemed the "Prophet" kept to his words as tales of how he had enriched and bettered the lives of various individuals began to spread.[6]

Personal life
He was married to a certain Joyce Okeke and had a sum total of 8 children.[8]

Controversy
In the year 1999/2000, Eddie, the self-proclaimed prophet of God had become a person of interest in numerous crimes committed not only in the community, but across Anambra state as a whole. As a result, he had begun to attract the attention of the Bakassi Boys; a vigilante security group which was set-up and spearheaded under the tenure of Chinwoke Mbadinuju, former governor of Anambra state, as anarchy had soaked deep into the land.[9][10]

The Bakassi Boys weren't like any other vigilante group because they supposedly harnessed very great "metaphysical powers"[11] to aid them in intercepting thieves and law breakers in general.

Eddie Nawgu had been accused of kidnapping, aiding & abetting infamous criminals, partaking in rituals involving use of human body parts, i.e. (the human skull) illegal possession of firearms and human sacrifice.[12][7][13] This took him to the top of their "most wanted list".

Sorcery
The Bakassi Boys who had been credited for being able to apprehend every defaulter of the law with minimal effort due to their supposed "metaphysical abilities" had come to meet their match when they failed 13 times[12] in attempt to capture Eddie Nawgu, and when at their wits end, they thought it wise to invite their supreme leader named, "Ngwuro" to help in the capture of this menace.

The capture of Eddie was indeed difficult because the self-proclaimed "Prophet" was, as reported by the Nigerian media; a sorcerer [12][4] who allegedly could defile the rules of Physics and had the ability to teleport; that is to say; he supposedly could instantaneously move from a point A to a point B regardless of distance and also could achieve this feat without physically walking. As a result of this, his apprehension was tagged the most difficult for the vigilante group.[12] Not until the intervention from their leader "Ngwuro" who managed to strip the sorcerer of his alleged mystic abilities were they able to finally capture the self-proclaimed prophet of God.

Eddie "Nawgu" Okeke's alias was "Alusi N'eje Uka" this literary when translated to the English language means "The Diety Who Goes To Church".[5][14]

Confession and death
Eddie Nawgu, when apprehended on the 14th trial by the vigilante group, was taken to their base of operation for further questioning and interrogation.[4] His release to the Nigerian police was vehemently opposed as the Bakassi boys argued the police could easily be influenced.

High-profile government workers and officials allegedly interceded for the release of Eddie Nawgu as reported by the head of the vigilante group; Mr.Ngwuro. Although, the names of these officials were never mentioned, it wasn't impossible that this sort of request was made by the elite individuals in the Nigerian society as the Nigerian media had severally reported long before he was captuted that Eddie had become closely associated with a good number of influential persons.[12][13]

During his stay as prisoner in the apartment of the Bakassi Boys he allegedly made startling confessions and acknowledged he was guilty of human sacrifice.[4] He was eventually beheaded by the Bakassi Boys at the Ochanja Market.[15]

In 2003, Nigeria’s new nominee for ministerial post, Dr. Chris Ngige was taken to Okija shrine to swear an oath of allegiance to his political godfathers to keep his side of agreement to them on winning the Anambra governorship election.

Nigerian Police Raided Okija Fetish Shrines and Made Gruesome Discoveries of Dead Bodies and Human Parts

On August 5, 2004, Nigerians and the world were horrified at the news that Nigerian police raided the Okija shrines on August 4, 2004 and made gruesome discovery of over 70 dead bodies, human skulls, hundred and possibly thousands of human parts openly displayed and at various levels of decomposition, some still fresh and headless and some were in their coffins; the same shrines Dr. Ngige and his gang had gone to perform oath-taking rituals in order to be illegally installed governor of Anambra State.

The police also recovered over five registers containing the names of the patrons of the shrine. Among the cronies that reportedly accompanied Dr. Ngige to the shrine were members of the federal, as well as, state legislatures and other very influential politicians.

The police arrested over 40 workers, keepers and attendants of the Satanic shrines. These workers, keepers, and attendants are called ‘priests’ and ‘custodians’ of the shrine. The police also collected some full dead bodies and lots of human parts such as skulls and bones.

That set off speculation and unconfirmed reports filled the air that human being was sacrificed during the rituals. However the police investigation and actions of Gov. Ngige’s Anambra State Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice raises more questions of cover-up than answers.One Hon. Chuma Nzeribe, a member of Nigerian House of Representatives (a federal lawmaker) and few prominent individuals gave press interviews accusing the Anambra State Governor, Dr. Chris Ngige of patronizing the shrine and requested the police to quiz the governor regarding the dead bodies found there.

December 28, 2004: The Police Inspector-General Tafa Balogun stated in a press conference that forensic and pathological examination show that some of the dead bodies recovered from the Okija shrine had head injuries, which are signs that they were murdered.

March 2005: The Police concluded its investigation, granted bail to the ‘priests’ and transferred the case file to Governor Ngige’s Anambra State Ministry of Justice for prosecution.

July 2005: After almost five months of studying the case file, Ngige’s Anambra State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice dropped a bombshell when he stated there would be problems prosecuting the ‘priests’ because the charges preferred by the police against the ‘priests’ could not support the facts uncovered by the police investigation.

August 24, 2005: Chief Magistrate freed the 38 surviving ones on the grounds that there was no evidence to sustain the charges against them.

Few months later, Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo dismissed The Police Inspector-General Tafa Balogun and accused him of numerous frauds and corruption. Tafa Balogun was arrested, charged to court, convicted and served prison time; the first and only Police Inspector General in the history of Nigeria to be arrested, charged to court, convicted and served prison time.

It is unknown whether Anambra State funds went to the direction of the convicted corrupt police boss.

The Anambra State Police has arrested a metal fabricator identified as Ifeanyi Okpoko a.k.a Anagwanti, over the death of a 16-year-old boy and alleged ritual.

A metal fabricator identified as Ifeanyi Okpoko popularly known as Anagwanti, has been arrested by the operatives of Nigerian Police in the Ogidi area of Anambra State, on suspicion of ritual murder.

According to reports, Okpoko who hails from Umunnaama, Eziowelle town in Idemili North Local Government Area of the state, was accused of abducting a 16-years-old boy, Chidera Ezeanya in Eziowelle area of the state on Sunday, October1st, 2017.

It was gathered that he allegedly tied and hung him on a hand-crane and by the time Chidera’s dead body was discovered the next day by the youths in the village, some vital organs were missing from his body.


An eyewitness, Chukwudi Okafor said the deceased, Chidera, was in his compound playing on that fateful afternoon with his age mates when Ifeanyi Okpoko called him. Okafor along with Chidera’s play mates had thought that the man wanted to send him on an errand since all of them are from the same Umunnaama village.

Okafor said when they waited till night without seeing him, they went to their various houses, adding that the next morning being Monday October 2, when they learnt that Chidera had not come back, they all went to Ifeanyi Okpoko’s house in search of him, only to see find him tied and hung on a hand-crane.

He said; “We shouted and ran out to call elderly people in the village but before we came back, Okpoko had untied the body, put it in his car and drove out of his compound. It was later that we heard that his body had been deposited at a mortuary in Ogidi.”


An octogenarian, Pa Ezekiel Uzomah who expressed shock at the incident said that what Okpoko did was an abomination. He said the youths had wanted to burn the suspect’s house but they were restrained from taking the law into their hands.

However, he said the village has tied palm frond around Okpoko’s house as a sign of ostracization.

Pa Uzomah said that according to their rule, they don’t bring police into issues in their village, adding that the gruesome murder of Chidera by his own kinsmen is beyond the village and prayed that justice should be served for the slain boy.
