Xiaomi is definitely a good brand with solid specs. But just like every other good Chinese phone brands; Huawei, Lenovo etc they are mostly dont or are very slow with Updating their software (OTA). Dont be surprised to know dat those that will ship with Android 7.0 will die with it, if ever yhey will be updated it will be miles after the top brands. Many of these Chinese phones are not developer friendly, go to xda, and their threads are lack developers support.

In the US, most carriers dont offer them, if you want one uou have to buy it outrightly not through their contracts and no one buys a 700 dollar phone if its not on a contract.

Their phones are cheap for a reason, Phone manufacturers pay google for their updates, pay for adverts, which these Chinese brands avoid to keep costs down. Most of them use the cheaper MTK processors rather than the more expensive snapdragon, although it doesnt mean cheaper is not better but they lack developers. Its just like comparing a sony TV to an LG TV, the price of Sony maybe almost double but LG is still good.

To make a Chinese phone will cost almost thesame in making a Samsung or iphone but if u put the price on thesame level, no one will buy it. Only in Nigeria, we dish out 300k to buy a phone. Abroad if its not on a contract then forget it.

Probably lack of phone security. In these days where privacy is a major concern there's a huge possibility the phone manufacturers sell your data to other companies for random reasons. It makes sense. Facebook sells every user information to monitoring agencies hence can acquire funds needed to expand and maintain their social network.
I don't trust Chinese brands because they're well known for taking ethical shortcuts in favour of profit.

I decided to ignore his post yesterday, many people don't know /understand what they say. I wonder which other brand get OTA updates as much as xiaomi. As I type there is already OTA for my device.

I thank you guys for ur maturity in ignoring my post without adding insults as is d norm on nairaland. I was just trying to give points why they are cheap, not trying to underate Xiaomi phones. I have held their phones n admire them too.

obviously iPhone is overpriced and Samsung as someone explained already.... given the costs of marketing and sales.... all these xiaomi avoids... their products speaks for itself consistently over the years and they provide updates for all their products from redmi 1..... security is second to none.. among the best currently available anywhere in the world

We are Nigerians, our system is faulty. If the Chinese are able to infiltrate people's and the government's information we give zero f-ucks, everything done here is based on pen and paper means of records storage.

I think oneplus has been caught with collecting info of the users and sending it to a dedicated server but from what I read, it was not for sale but it is still a security bridge. I think almost everybody does this but Americans blows things out of proportion once a serious non western countries tries to compete very well with them. On the issues of ban based on Trump's allegation of infiltrating government server, it is a well know fact that this is about silent war going on against China especially against made in China 2020 plan, american government is trying to do everything to kill China's ambition to dominates AI, chips, processors, robotics and all related technology by 2020. Hence the best way is to stop american companies from selling chips to Chinese company at the same time finds away to hinder the growth Of Chinese technology by blocking access to the largest market in the world.

In a nutshell, Chinese companies collects people's data which they use for different purposes based on your status in the society but it is not peculiar to Chinese, american does it more than anyone and almost all advanced countries does it. In fact your Samsung TV is eyes, ears and tracker to some government around the world while your Andriod device is ears, eyes and spy to american government. Boeing, Cadillac, GPS etc are also used by american government to monitor people.

That's spot on. In addition, some of those information are used by the 1st world countries to bolster their security. They easily fish out what constitutes a threat to them by monitoring what users do on their phones.

Buy a XIAOMI phone and try to unlock the bootloader. You will know the true meaning of frustration.
