Residents of Evbuotubu community, in the Egor Local Government Area of Edo State, on Monday staged a protest over the deplorable state of infrastructure in the area.

The angry residents, who carried placards, lamented that the community, said to be the second most populous in the area, had allegedly been neglected for too long.

They said the bad condition of the roads, in addition to the irregular power supply, had not only subjected them to hardship but also threatened their means of livelihood.

The protesters also warned political parties planning to organise their campaigns in the area to steer clear until the needs of the residents were provided.

The protest grounded commercial activities and traffic in the area temporarily as some of the youths chanted anti-government songs.

One of them, who did not want to be named, accused Governor Godwin Obaseki of failing to fulfill his promise to fix the bad roads during his electoral campaign.

The resident stated, “We do not have good roads, from Asoro bus stop to the main community. The situation is very bad.

“The community school is always flooded when it rained and the children do not have a playground. If the roads are not fixed, we will not cast our votes for anybody. We will not allow political campaigns.”

But reacting, the Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, said that the state government had acknowledged the state of the roads in the area and penciled them down for reconstruction.

Osagie, in a statement, said, “Specifically, the Evbuotubu road leads to the Benin river port, which has been scheduled for dualisation to accommodate the heavy vehicular traffic to and from the seaport on completion. Only recently, the state government awarded a contract for the construction of Ugbor-Amagba road to bring succour to the people in the area, kick-starting a series of the award of road reconstruction projects.”
