BREAKING: One Shot As Detained Soldiers Break Out Of 'Overcrowded Cells' To Protest Poor Feeding, Others At Nigeria's 8 Division In Sokoto

The source said some of the soldiers had been in detention for four to five years.

Asoldier identified as Lcpl Charles Ekefure with 17NA/76/1660 has been reportedly shot following complaints by some detained soldiers who broke out of their cells (guardrooms) in Sokoto State.

The incident occurred on Thursday at the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army in Sokoto amid the soldiers’ clamour for better food and improved living conditions.

It was learnt that the soldiers had demanded to speak to Major General Mutkut Godwin, the GOC 8 Division, Nigerian Army.

A source who spoke with SaharaReporters on Friday said over 100 soldiers were detained at the 8 Division with 10 soldiers in each cell.

The source said some of the soldiers had been in detention for four to five years.

The source said, "There are 10 rooms in the facility and each room is supposed to take maybe two persons, it's very small. But the rooms are now congested because there are almost 10 persons in a room and over 40 people are sleeping in the corridor.

"The incident happened on Thursday as the detained soldiers complained about their standard of living, broke the guardroom gate and demanded to speak with the GOC.

"Some officers later told them that the GOC was on the ground to speak with them but surprisingly the GOC was not there. But they opened fire on the soldiers. Lcpl Charles Ekefure and Lt Col JS Obot gave the order.

"Many soldiers are there who have not been receiving salaries for 2 to 3 years.

"While some of the soldiers in the detention have been there for 4 to 5 years now. Injustice has been taking place," the source added.

"Some of the soldiers have now been moved from the 8 Div provost guardroom where the incident happened to garrison guardroom, while some were moved to Airforce guardroom. Seven others were granted open arrest."

SaharaReporters learnt that the soldier who was shot had been taken to MRS Hospital in Sokoto.

"I understand that his bone was affected," the source said.

Meanwhile, all efforts to reach the Army spokesperson, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, were not successful as he didn't answer calls or reply to messages sent to his mobile phone.

100 soldiers detained because they were working with terrorists, bandits and kidnappers.

This shows how bad the recruitment of the military is.

You, this miserable piece of shiit, who told you that? Imagine detaining soldiers who are supposed to be fighting terrorists for 5 years over minor issues as we have seen it before!

Have you asked why they are there in the first place?

Should the Army closes her eyes to offending Soldiers?

Cowards! Cowards!! Cowards!!!

The detained soldiers know what to do. They should stop disturbing us with rubbish videos.

You kill innocent civilians
Made widows out of beautiful families
Rendered your citizens homeless
Leaving trace of sorrow tears and blood

Repent from your wicked ways

FG needs to review the Military constitution and give proper orientation to serving officers and soldiers.. anything relating to tribal or religious sentiments should not have a place in the mind of our gallant officers. A soldier has only God and his country to defend.

Now we don't know the true story.. whether it's the Christians among them they packed and imprisoned in Sokoto or it's the erring ones.. Noone knows for sure.

Some of them are there because they openly complained about lack of proper weapons and ammunition, and about corruption in the military, among their officers

The Nigerian army is a terrorist organization. From their training, conduct among themselves and how they treat civilians down to how they give logistics to invading herdsmen while burning down villages and raping indigenous women, it has been confirmed that there's nothing good about them.
Where in the world will soldiers say that they weren't given orders to help villagers calling out for help when under attack from daredevil herdsmen? Only in Nigeria.
They are a colonial relic that should be disbanded and reorganized afresh with the proper orientation to value human life.

COMRADES are astonished at this news
When will injustice come to an end in Nigeria? When will Nigerians completely have their freedom? How can FG be treating her citizens in such inhumane way? Nigerians deserve freedom either inside or outside of prison

Arrest is supposed to reform people but in Nigeria you come out harder than you went in..

why keep people waiting for orderly room trial for upto 4 years.. for what offence exactly.. must they be a soldier?! why not simply exit them from the force..

Try them, if they are guilty, expel them from the military, they automatically become civilians, then move them to a correctional facility

I know a commander that is facing serious trial because he has the phone number of a bandit.
I honestly doubt those soldiers worked with bandits.
and yes there's allocation for their feeding, why are they not being fed?
and why keep a man in detention for four years without utilizing his potential.
you better prosecute and dismiss them rather than jail them for years doing nothing.

This is why I hate military work, your commander can detain you for 1 year over flimsy reasons. Police orderly room is 30days max then dismissal to freedom/prison

Y'all can remember the Igbo lieutenant that stressed a soldier, the soldier shot him dead. Several of such cases abound
