This upgrade was abandoned and too much emphasis placed on the teaching hospital in Awka. However, the Specialist Hospital, Onitsha will save more lives when it's finally fully upgraded into a center of excellence as Obiano promised to do.

You see, this skyscraper really look nice but the problem is, a tree can never make a forest. Why not onitsha city center with its already established skyline? Development is not anchored on strong individual but on strong government institutions. Anambra govt should have shown this man the appropriate place meant for his type of building. If he does not consider other parts of the state as home then he is not a true son.

There are tens of Anambra sons and daughters a hundred times wealthier than Dr Maduka. Let them go and build their own in Onitsha!

Anambra as Attractive Investment Destination

As bargain hunters comb the length and breadth of the global financial market for fertile ground amid dynamics of competing economies, African countries continue to receive the attention due a region of strong potential.

The trend has lifted some countries and their sub-nationals to a spotlight of accelerated economic growth as investors probe virtually all the sectors. One of these sub-nationals is Anambra State.



Anambra is ranked among Nigeria’s major foreign investment destinations according to report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

The statistics bureau in its 2018 second quarter (Q2 2018) report released recently had shown Anambra among top 10 Nigerian states, including Abuja, was preferred by foreign investors during the review period.

The others were Abuja, Lagos, Abia, Ogun, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Bauchi, Delta and Ogun states.

Anambra has increasingly attracted foreign investment since October 2017 when a total of $3,771,000 was recorded (in Q1 2017), which represented the total capital inflow for the year. Accelerated investment inflow was recorded in Q1 2018 when capital importation of $5,000,000 in March dimmed $4,975 that trickled in earlier in January, bringing the total inflow for Q1 2018 to $5,004,975.

In what appears investors’ increased confidence in Anambra, capital inflow amounting $5,000,000 was recorded in April 2018, bringing the total foreign investment in the state for 2018 to $10,004,975. Overall inflow for 18 months (January 2017 – June 2018) was $13,775,975.00, according to data mined from NBS website. The increase in investment inflow to Anambra contradicts the trend in overall capital importation in Nigeria during the period.

The NBS report showed that Nigeria recorded a decline of $790 million in foreign investment in the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2018) as a total of $5.51 billion was received during the period compared to $6.3 in the preceding quarter. This represents a drop of 12.5 per cent (quarter-on-quarter) against the preceding period (Q1 2018).

However, this represents a whopping 207.62 per cent increase compared to the corresponding quarter of 2017 (Q2 2017) when $1.79 billion was recorded. The NBS attributed the drop-in investment inflow in Q2 2018 to decline in ‘Portfolio and Other Investment’ categories which dropped by 9.76 per cent and 24.07 per cent respectively.

Analysis of capital inflow received through Portfolio investment showed a total of $4.11 billion representing 74.7 per cent of total inflow during the period. (Q2 2017 was $770.51 million.) This is followed by $1.13 billion in the Other Investment category accounting for 20.5 per cent of total Q2 2018 capital inflow. ($747.47 million was received in Q2 2017.)

Inflow recorded in the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) category (mainly equities, equipment, machinery) was $261.4 million or 4.7 per cent of total inflow for the quarter under review. (Q2 2017 figure was $274.37 million.)

“Capital Importation in the form of Money Market Instrument stood at $2,670.93 million in the second quarter, which was a 24.29% decrease over the previous quarter. Investments in both Equity and Bonds (under Portfolio Investments) reported steady quarter-on-quarter growth, with 49.43% and 19.13% respectively.

“It is worth noting that investments in bonds under this capital importation type has been steadily increasing since Q2, 2017, and in Q2 2018, it accounted for 9.71% of total portfolio investment,” the report explained.

Governor Willie Obiano had intensified industrialisation and agricultural development in the state which attracts huge foreign investment inflow. Anambra has queued-in into the Nigerian government diversification agenda by expanding the frontiers of non-oil sectors in the two areas thereby creating thousands of jobs in various capacities.

For instance, the state’s agro-allied export scheme initiated by the Obiano’s administration attracted foreign investors’ attention that moved in to participate in the project when it was launched in 2016.

This led to the construction of a $150 million export processing facility in Ogidi – a suburb of Onitsha, the state’s commercial nerve centre, meant for conditioning and processing of export-oriented food items to Europe.

When ABX World which had agreed to partner with Anambra in executing the project reneged, Obiano moved to seek a replacement immediately to avoid the initiative relapsing into oblivion.

“Anambra’s recent emergence among the league of topmost capital importation destinations in Nigeria is not a surprise because Obiano has maintained the tempo of industrialisation and agricultural development in the state.

“The state’s agricultural development programme has resulted in Anambra being a net exporter of locally produced rice and expanding the frontier of economic diversification. Foreign investors know where to put their money; when it is right, they know it.

The National Bureau of Statistics report on capital investment that goes to Anambra is encouraging”, said Peter Obiefuna, a stockbroker.

Of particular notice is that Obiano is pursuing domestic-oriented development and emphasising on efficient management of resources. It is on record that Anambra, unlike most states, did not collect the bailout fund extended to states by the Federal Government in 2015 to enable them to pay salaries, a “gesture” that increased the debt profile of the recipient states.

The debt has a repayment tenor of 20 years. “This is capable of crippling development efforts of the states, no matter the improvement in their revenue profile”, Obiefuna said.

With recent developments in the state, Anambra will record significant investment inflow in 2018 to consolidate the giant stride in industrialization and agricultural development. “It is commendable that the state is not lagging behind in the rapid industrialization that will happen in the South-East soon because the signs are already here”, Kenneth Okoye, an Onitsha-based businessman said.

Am surprised that people will embark on needless propaganda in a bid to score cheap political points. How can someone bandy digitally edited pictures of non existing projects just to satisfy there pay masters albeit to justify the pittance the collect. For your information, Anambra had not made any significant progress in terms of infrastructural development since the current administration came into power. This government promised to complete the only road started by Peter Obi in Ukpor, Nnewi south LGA during there campaign but unfortunately, that road seem abandoned for all who care to listen. Many roads in Anambra state are currently in a state of disrepair, due to reasons best known to the government. Ukpor in Nnewi south LGA has almost been cut off from the rest of the state due to non motorable roads, no electricity no water yet someone will be deceiving himself with digitally edited pictures. The Saint Paul's Junction to Umunuko road is so dilapidated that even motorcycles cannot ride through. This is a local government headquarters that we are talking of. Interestingly, the Speaker of ASHA is from Ukpor, yet she has nothing to show for been elected. So sad and unfortunate that Ukpor people are suffering under this administration. What has Obiano and madam speaker done for Ukpor?

True! I think Oba is the fastest growing city in Anambra today. The old Oba airport site and the area around Rojenny Tourist village are looking like obodo oyibo. Onitsha boys are littering mansions all over the place per second. Oba is the new Lekki of Anambra.

Anambra Girl, Tochukwu Anyigbo Among Bronze Winning Team Nigeria At The First Global Robotics Challenge In Mexico

Anambra - born Tochukwu Anyigbo from Ihiala is among the bronze winning Team Nigeria which scored in the top 40% of total teams, and won two bronze medals at the First Global Robotics Challenge which held in Mexico. A total of 161 teams (countries) participated.

The team won in the Outstanding Supporter and International Journey categories and comprised of five secondary school students schooling in Lagos state.

Team Nigeria, made up of four girls and a boy were selected after a competitive process that held on April 28, 2018 at the Syrian Club.

The students are Anjolaoluwa Olowokere (Lagoon School), Tochukwu Anyigbo (Lagoon School), Daberechi Onyeacholem (Green Springs, Lekki), Udodirim Iroaganachi (Queen’s College), and Samuel Ikenna Mbah (Osezele Secondary School).

Over a period of three and half months, they were coached on teamwork, commitment, problem solving, and critical thinking.

This year’s Global Robotic Challenge focussed on Energy Impact. Students had to build a robot that simulated providing energy using four energy sources: Solar, Wind Turbine, Combustion Plant, and Fuel Cubes. In addition, they were grouped with teams from two other countries forming a team of three on either side. In the process they had to strategize and plan with students on their teams from other countries learning the art of diplomacy, public speaking, and respect for other’s opinion. The students also learned about various sources of alternative energy.

Mrs. Remi Willoughby of Alofos Science & Technology Foundation which helped prepare Team Nigeria said; “the team visited the Egbin Power Plant in Ikorodu to understand our country’s source of energy, and they were able to reflect on how we can improve energy source in Nigeria”. Continuing, she said that, “while In Mexico they made friends with students from across the globe learning different cultures and even picking up a few words in other languages. This was a chance of a lifetime”.

Mrs Willoughby thanked His Excellency, Chief Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra State on behalf of Association of STEM Educators in Nigeria for the moral and financial support to the team, concluding that the team’s success was “made possible by His Excellency’s donation towards our team’s fundraising goal. His donation made our journey very smooth, and we were able to secure visas without incident”.

Speaking exclusively with Anambra Broadcasting Service, Mr Jude Anyigbo, the father of 16-year old Tochukwu Anyigbo said he is grateful to God and very proud of his daughter and Team Nigeria for their achievements, considering the hard work and sacrifice that went into the preparation even while preparing for the 3rd term exams.

According to him, “Tochukwu is good in Arts and Sciences. She is the Labour prefect of Lagoon school, We are exposing her to all possibilities to let her make her career choice”.

He also thanked Governor Willie Obiano and the state government for co-sponsoring the team.
