mrrights:Nice. At least he has a head on his shoulder. I sometimes feel some of these guys can make more impact in the legislature or even as state governors. I hope we can have people like him at state levels too. More so, what we need mainly from Federal government is direction. |

Olawepo was a huge students leader in the 80s and PRO of NANS. He studied at UNILAG when they were real thorns in the flesh of any Nigerian government. The seat of Nigeria's government was Dodan Barracks in Lagos and it was always big trouble and embarrassment for the government whenever UNILAG students step out of their Lagoon side campus in protest. The Amnesty International declared him a '’Prisoner of conscience'’ in 1989 after his arrest alongside 3 other UNILAG students during an uprising against Babangida's government. At the end of the uprising, over two hundred people were estimated to have been killed by the police, a huge number wounded and some student activists detained. Olawepo was clamped into detention for four months in solitary confinement under the Detention of Persons Decree No. 2 of 1984 as amended. It was detention without trial. He was released after an epic legal battle led by his counsel, the late President of the Nigeria Bar Association Alao Aka-Bashorun, and an international campaign co-ordinated by the International Union of Students, World Federation of Democratic Youth, Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch. His case and that of Gbenga Komolafe adjudicated on by Justice Tajudeen Odunowo became the Loco classicos in Nigeria's legal history as it was the first time a court would order the release of a detainee under the draconian Detention of Persons Security Decree No.2. |
