Living in a remote town in the Antarctic already means sacrificing quite a lot.

Officials in the Antarctic village of Villa Las Estrellas on King George Island ask residents to go the extra mile and sacrifice their appendix.

But they have a sensible reason.

According to the BBC, the operation must be carried out on people who plan to stay in the Chilean settlement because the nearest hospital is over 600 miles away.

While there are doctors living on the military and research base, none are specialist surgeons able to treat appendicitis, which requires immediate surgery.

This means that before going to the base, residents undergo a pre-emptive appendectomy to avoid any emergency situations.

Despite the remoteness of the settlement, it does boast a school, library, post office, radio station, bank and supermarket.

But conditions can be harsh, especially in the winter where temperatures dip as low as -47C and people have to stay indoors, or risk death.

How a Soviet doctor cut out his own appendix in the Antarctic.



During an expedition to the Antarctic, Russian surgeon Leonid Rogozov became seriously ill.


He needed an operation - and as the only doctor on the team, he realised he would have to do it himself.




Leonid Ivanovich Rogozov (Russian 14 March 1934 - 21 September 2000) was a Soviet general practitioner who took part in the sixth Soviet Antarctic Expedition in 1960 -1961.

He was the only doctor stationed at the Station and, while there, developed appendicitis, which meant he had to perform an appendectomy on himself in a case of self-surgery.

The pain was intolerable and he knew he was getting worse.

He recorded his thoughts in his journal:

I did not sleep at all last night.

It hurts like the devil. A snowstorm whipping through my soul, wailing like a hundred jackals.

Still no obvious symptoms that perforation is imminent, but an oppressive feeling of foreboding hangs over me ... This is it ... I have to think through the only possible way out: to operate on myself ... It's almost impossible ... but I can't just fold my arms and give up.

Operating mostly by feeling around, Rogozov worked for an hour and 45 minutes, cutting himself open and removing the appendix. The men he'd chosen as assistants watched as the "calm and focused" doctor completed the operation, resting every five minutes for a few seconds as he battled vertigo and weakness. He recalled the operation in a journal entry:
