Ebullience:
Donald Duke, presidential aspirant of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), says he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because the “umbrella was breaking”.

Duke served as governor of Cross River for eight years under the platform of PDP which has umbrella as its symbol.

Speaking during the inauguration of Cross River SDP secretariat in Calabar on Tuesday, the former governor said the SDP is on a mission to save the country from bad leadership.

“People have asked me why I left the PDP, and I always tell them that I left because the umbrella was breaking,” he said,

“The problem with the PDP was that it does automatic things automatically. With me as the presidential candidate of the SDP, we will drown other parties.

“The SDP as a party is on a rescue mission from the danger the country is into, because there is no positive hope for Nigerians.

“We have come to put the country in the right direction; therefore, SDP is prepared and committed to take hold of the country come 2019. We have come to build, recover and restore our dear country from the bad leadership of the so-called APC and PDP ideologies.”

Funny Duke.
You are in SDP, but still fixated on PDP. Calling the "PDP" out four times in your interview and just the "APC" once, shows where your direction and angst is. Do you realize that it is the APC that is in power?

Imagine his last statement; We have come to build, recover and restore our dear country from the bad leadership of the so-called APC and PDP ideologies.”

As if he wasn't part of the bad leadership of pdp ideologies.

Amen. I thought Duke was wiser. But he just get fine face for nothing. Like many of those slay queens. shocked shocked

He made the wrong noises too much.

Himself, Amaechi and several others were madly envious of Jonathan. They thought they deserved VP that led to his presidency more.

GEJ didn't have to plot or scheme to get there. He was patient and relied on fate/God.

In fact Nigeria is suffering & will suffer more for the evil, bigotry and worse that we allowed power brokers to haul at GEJ.

I was a critic of GEJ in his first year as president. I thought being young, he should quickly make a mark on infrastructure, light & education (as a former lecturer). Because they might kill him, deny him second term, or scheme to impeach him. But by second year he was doing great things, economy was growing, repaired roads like Lagos-Benin road (neglected since early 90s), railway (also rotted away since early 90s), hundreds of Almajiri schools, new Fed universities, economy boomed, agric policy on track, electricity situation improved and more. I was impressed.

But the more he did, the more Lagos-Ibadan press lambasted him. It became clear to me that it was not about performance but sheer bigotry and "owners of Nigeria" not tolerating minority tribe ruler.

All that was again confirmed during Oil Subsidy protests. It was time to scrap oil subsidy, save money and repair refineries. But the SW and Northern people who largely own the companies scamming the subsidy system mobilised their large populations to protest.

Not to mention the masterminded political stunt of Chibok girls kidnap to undermine GEJ govt.

All will reap what they sowed.

I have no tribal kinship or political ties with GEJ by the way.

@Donald Duke. I put it to you that you left because of "interest"! It is either you are hopeful of getting a position allotment or you are trying to be SAFE from your excesses or mistakes while in office. I am not faulting that at all because it's all POLITICS!
But what I am trying to correct is the reason u gave for defection " the unbrella was breaking". My dear, why not quit moving in circles within parties? If the unbrella is broken, then BUILD AN UNBRELLA THAT WONT BREAK! smiles

Eeyahh... so basically, Donald Duke is no longer a real contestant. It will be hard for anybody to garner much votes outside PDP or APC.
Well... there's money to be made this election season, so I invite all contestants, potential winners and certified losers, to bribe me with 10k each... I won't refuse a bag of rice or even garri grin

If the whole of SS, SE and some parts middlebelts and SW don't massively vote for this man, I will never ever take Biafra or Niger Delta palaver serious again.

Good people of Nigeria, this is one man you must vote for because of several reasons.

Voting him in will also break the jinx of unwritten zoning to either North or South nonsense. And a different party from APC or PDP taking over will further enrich our democracy.

GEJ was a sorry political story no need of bringing him up here. His story is almost similar to Ambode's. He played his politics wrong. In the history of this country, the best and tactical opposition is usually from the SW, not this zig-zag gragra from the SE, and so a wise politician would carry that section of the country along or loses footing. He foolishly sidelined them and rushed in the last few months to correct his mistakes but it was already too late.

The summary is that GEJ was not wise and was not on top of his games, he just found himself there and the SW opposition of GEJ administration was not bigotry but a well calculated civilised successful opposition. Nigerians don't deserve a leader who is not on top of his game, like GEJ, no matter the records of projects initiated.

I have no tribal kinship or political ties with SW or GEJ.

In your opinion which politician since 1979 has done better than GEJ? Tell someone who actually witnessed all those regimes.

The hatred was that he shouldn't have been there. He was not meant to be there by power brokers. Not about his performance. In a brutish country, a gentleman is an anomaly. It wasn't do or die politics for him. Maybe in 50 years Nigeria will have civilised to that point.

You asserted that he was not on top of his game. Is game what is important or performance? You did not sensibly argue that he did not do all the things that I pointed out that he delivered.

People said oil price was high so he made much money. But nobody mentions that it also meant high landing price of imported petrol and high subsidy that he paid.

Now APC says subsidy has gone up because oil price has gone up. Was that not also the case during GEJ's time?

Buhari is still paying huge subsidy that he said didn't exist.

Buhari that cried, begged and tried in 3 elections before winning, and supposedly prepared, what has he achieved? Oluwole NYSC finance minister, NSA, IGP and others out of control? Over 7 million jobs lost, IBERIA and other companies who fled? Wow! What a great preparation. grin cheesy
