Making saving from your salary is mission impossible if you're staying independently. But that notwithstanding, if you're determined u can save a reasonable amount over a period of time no matter how little you're earning to start up something doing on your own.
I keep on advocating for youth entrepreneurship empowerment especially for graduates. You can't continue to rely on employers who can can wake up one day to sack you so as to replace you with his or her relation.

You have to do something else on the side. If you want better things in life which am sure you do, 42k won't do. First thing, buy your foods in bulk as that saves money. Consider cycling to cut transport fare or talk to people that drives near your workplace for a lift and you pay them monthly. Set out few percentage of your wages for training or more education . You have to lift up yourself as no one will and batter training or education might help. Depending on your age, [s]girlfriend might be a no no until your finance improve or else the relationship will cost you a big chunk of your little income[/s].

Youngman are you serious? How's this related to the question he asked or in anyway necessary?

For you to give this kind of advice you must be an ATM maga for some girls before you get married.

I used to earn 120k, i saved 40k. Sent 15k and 10k to my mum and kid sis repectively. To be left with 55k which i was ok with. Now lets see what i would have done if 42k was left.

Rent monthly 7k (if its more than this, get a roommate to split)

Feeding 15k (if you eat a lot like me, but can be less)
Tips: cook your food yourself, use gas stove instead of kero, buy foodstuff in bulk, make your food basically balanced (e.g rice-beans and stew, not rice-beans-plantain-egg sauce and chicken......you go jus wreck). Try not to eat outside unless you have no time.
If there's a little piece of land at your backyard, plant ugwu, ewedu, pepper or okro, which would save you some money eventually.

Buy one piece of clothing in two months to add to your wardrobe (about 4k) Avoid asoebi like a plague. Avoid show off too (Bola is wearing Gucci, you want to wear too, what you don't know is that Bola begs for garri)

You have no business with a television at this stage, so....scrap.

Mobile data 1k (do i need to explain this?)

At this point, you've spent 25k for your very basic neccessities.

Savings 10k (use this for small investments which i'd talk about later)

You're left with 12k right?, you keep that for misc. (airtime, charity, treats, visits, get together e.t.c) but be prudent.

Now coming to investments.
You could buy clothes and sell at your work place, or grow some broilers (chicken) to sell before Christmas (breeding 50 birds shouldn't cost you more than 55k). Go into egg retails etc.

The truth is a Police man i know earns 45k, and i told him even if i earned that, i'd still "make it" after a few years. Just avoid show off and competition, because that's what makes people remain poor. Cheers!

No. I am wiser than you can ever be. I started my professional career in 2014 on a salary of 25k. I needed to learn new skills which were not taught in school and the experience of working in a corporate environment.

Six months down the line it was increased to 50k because I proved myself. Another six months (2015), it doubled and has continued to grow since then. Today, my tithe (if I dey pay am sef) is higher than the 42k we are talking about here but I started from somewhere.

You see why I said I am wiser than you can ever be? If 42k is not enough for you, TRY UNEMPLOYMENT which pays ZERO as salary.

My fellow nairalander pls advice, what can i do with 42k salary, am single buh i have a lot of bills to pay,

Even if you're prudent with your spending, you'll soon get married. That money without a passive income, because I don't subscribe to using your employer's time for side business, you can't break even, and also depending on which city you leave in.

Meanwhile, with just 5k, you can start a business without leaving your job and earn a nice extra income in the telecoms sector in Nigeria. It is called Virtual Top Up, VTU business.

In one year, you'll sack your boss.

If you need more information, send a whatsapp chat to 08063423482, and mention VTU BIZ.

All the best.

To let you further know how unwise you are, there is something called DEDUCTIVE INFERENCE.

From the evidence of your reasoning, I can deduce that you're not wise.

............

@Op.. 42k isn't bad, yet not good enough.

Bills would come, sort only in the order of priority. You can't completely get over with this.

Never take a Loan!

Cut your expenses according to your salary.

Make sure to save at least 2k every month.

Bros, what the young man said above is very possible. Clerical officers on 3:1 earn a little above 30k where I work and they're building houses. Such houses can't be your own taste but sure they're living in their homes. I work somewhere in Oyo state.
Civil Servants survive with cooperative, without that, one can't achieve anything.

try this for six months, then youll see that even 42k is even too much to start something that'll turn big.
and let me guess you sell those books?
