1. Aburi Accord was an agreement hurriedly put together by individuals acting on emotions rather than deep thought, reason and extensive debates that characterize genuine law making process, hence it was bound to be fraught with a lot of loopholes that would have later created room for constitutionally approved lawlessness and eventual anarchy.

2. Aburi Accord was a proposal for confederation contrary to the sovereign will and choice of the people expressed as federalism in the we-the-people Independence constitution of 1957 drafted in London by duly elected representatives from every federal consituency thus in line with universally accepted standard procedure of constitution drafting.

3. Unlike the 1957 Independence and 1963 Republican constitutions, Aburi Accord was drafted by the military establishment which had already subverted and destroyed our sovereign constitution without us demanding a construction review in the first instance, and without them explaining to us why they did so. Also involved in the illegality were unelected civilians and civil servants who, by the civil service anonymity principle, should not be heard let alone participate in politics and the legislative process which derives from it.

4. It is a universal principle of democracy that it is civilians that make laws for military, and not the other way round as we have with Aburi Accord. The military must be subject to civilian and in fact elected politicians' authority. But while drafting the agreements in Ghana the soldiers in attendance, including Ojukwu, mocked and derided the politicians all through and even accused them of causing the crisis which was actually caused by their own mutinous fellow army officers who staged a coup that had no place in our constitution.

5. Among all the seven points of the Accord, there was no agreement on return to civil rule which majority of Nigerians were expecting back home, no fixed date for any election, nothing! it was all agreements on how soldiers were going to share power henceforth among themselves along regional lines. It was a regional army proposal. Where on earth is regional army ever operated?
Those soldiers with the shared regional powers would have later had their emotional wounds healed with time and then unite into one big family which would have evolved into a perpetual and United power hegemony over the country.

6. With the implementation of the Accord, a precedent would have been set that any set of soldiers who don't like our sovereign constitution can just wake up from the barracks one day, allege corruption against the civilians, kick them out of power, throw away the constitution, pack themselves to a far away country, bring up another constitution from their own whims and caprices, return to the country, foist in on the people and go scot free. Then after sometime, another set of soldiers reapeat same, and it continues like that.
You know soldiers always have a "good" reason to dislike an existing constitution drafted by politicians.
Was that the kind of Nigeria you wanted?

But Aburi Accord itself did not even promise to return power to civilians. There was no agreement in it on return to civil rule let alone a fixed date for election. What killed Nigeria is not the rejection of Aburi Accord but the first distortion of our Independence and Republican constitution by Ironsi.
Please recall that the Independence constitution was an agreement that got the approval of everyone including even Ironsi's kinsmen hence was the first and most broad based mutual agreement in the history of Nigreria. In fact on his inauguration day as army GoC Ironsi stood before the whole world and solemnly swore to defend and protect that constitution regardless of the circumstances. However, he later reneged on that solemn oath of office and manufactured an excuse to attack and subvert that same constitution. That was the singular action that convinced everyone in Nigeria that agreements are not really sacrosanct after all. So from that experience no one saw Aburi Accord as sacrosanct. Even if Aburi Accord had been implemented, what was the assurance that another Ironsi wouldn't still have come out from nowhere to violate and subvert it going by the previous experience?

Nigeria is better now than how it would have been had Aburi Accord been implemented.

1. The first province to experience economic explosion would obviously be the Western Province. The Oduduwua Master plan will be revealed. There would be trans-regional 4g internet fiber connection/rail/subways/highways/power grids etc. Yoruba will become the 2nd official language. They are relatively united. They have oil. They own academia. They have mega corporations. The WP would be the first to have stable 24/7 power supply! Foreign money will flood the province. More Forbes recognized billionaires will arise. Some of them will be internet billionaires. Lagos will be relieved a little from overpopulation as railway lines from other states will make living elsewhere and working in Lagos a breeze.

After the west, this province will be the 2nd to have 24/7 electricity. They will start exporting food as a major revenue generator.

exports, tourism development and food production/exports. This will become a food hub in West Africa. They will export more food than any other province. Mega mining and food corporations will arise. This province will have foreign inflows through tourism development greater than any other province. It will host the most beautiful places to live in Nigeria.

4. The Eastern Province will transform into the Auto Industry Hub of Africa. Indigenous manufacturing of vehicles that will start competing with foreign vehicles will commence in earnest. This will grow to manufacturing of airplanes, helicopters, tractors, cranes, heavy duty construction equipment etc. Forbes recognised billionaires living in Anambra will arise. The Biafra agitation will fizzle out since formation of the EP will be seen as a Biafra success in another form.
