I try to have breakfast at home before going to work but the last few weeks have been busy leading to me having breakfast at work.

Now, there is this popular family-owned-and-run food place. They prepare rice, beans, porridge and their numerous accompanying food. They work from Monday to Sunday, only skeletal service on Sunday though. Their turnover per day excluding Sunday could be approximately N500,000 in my estimation.

You can see that they have mastered mass cooking and service. It is relatively clean if you remove the uncovered drainage in front of them. Their food is not bad too and not overpriced. The masses flock there, I don’t know what they call this place because there is no signage and I don’t interact to that level with the community to know who goes there regularly and what they call it.

In all, they have their head in the right place and might be there for decades to come because of good all-round-service plus continuous improvement.

Business 2

I have to walk past it to reach the first foodseller I mentioned above. Being an adventurer, I decided to try them out. I entered and found someone sitting there as the madam. Her demeamour and look shows she is probably not educated but proud of owning/running the business. She has made an attempt to make it shiny with tiles, show glass and expensive cookware.

“Good morning, what food do you have?, I asked in Yoruba”. She proudly listed all sorts of swallow food and rice. “I will go for rice, don’t you have anything to accompany the rice?”. She retorted, “didn’t I mention beans and dodo?”

Showing customer attitude abi? I noted in my mind. “Please give me my food in a takeaway pack” which I knew was going to create challenge of change. I then wanted to combine beans and dodo to round it off to the nearest hundred. Our madam retorted proudly, “we don’t sell like that here”. I told her, “I am trying to avoid conflict of change, sell the 2 the way you sell (N50 each minimum)”.

How do you sell meat? Come and see drama, opened about 6 dishes with assorted fish and meat (in her mind, the presentation was something to marvel at).

“Goat meat N200, Chicken N300, Bokoto N200, Smoked fish N200 and she went on.

“Give me smoked fish” although meat and pomo would have worked for me at N100 (sebi na me be adventurer).

Time to add-up and collect change, my bill was N430, I gave her N500. Oya bring change, no N20 to complete my N70. “Don’t you have pure water? ” I asked. The proud madam replied; “we don’t sell it here”. She still found the time to insult a male assistant in Yoruba (effectively calling him a slowpoke) for placing a dish in a place she considered unsuitable . “Don’t you want to come back here?” she asked. “In fact, I want to be living here, I responded in my mind”. I told her cryptically, “my path just crossed this way”.

She managed to borrow N20 from a young guy sitting at the entrance to balance my change. As I walked out she announced, “we sell yam here too.”

Do you think I will be going back to her shop?

I won’t because her attitude has demarketed her business. My estimate of the cost of preparing her food offering would be about N150,000 and her sales for every day she opens could be between N200,000 to N250,000. However, her attitude would put many educated people off her shop because of 2 things, they can afford to pay more at places where there’s good customer service or decide to take less pricey options with good customer service and decent food.

Ultimately, her poor attitude means the business might not last long in comparison to the first business.

How was her food? Pedestrian.

Good read.. OP try White house @sabo close to ozone cinemas.. from my calculation they should be making more than a million every 3days.. Food used to be great especially Amala n Gbegiri n Ewedu with Ogunfe..This days the food is not that great again. But, people still patronise them a lot.

I only go there weekends to look for babes and pay for their food, then take them to Ozone cinemas or Silvercafe Bar for drinks, then my home for knacks".

This works any weekend I go there.. mostly those unilag babes, I like 3some and I can guarantee you will get it, if you smart.

This weekend I will be there..anyone wanna join?

If you think foodseller 2 is rude, come to Lagos Island, on Beckley street, a place called Iya eba restaurant. Good food, good environment, comparatively expensive when compared to other bukas and mehn, they are rude! The way they answer you, a first timer will think you are not paying for the food. Always grumpy, once you hesitate on what you want, maybe you are indecisive, they will behave like you have committed a crime but they still have a lot of customers. One day, it will affect them.

Most foodsellers are rude anyway. If you are attended to by the waiters only then you may not find out the real attitude of the owners but interact with them one on one and you'll be disgusted by their attitude.

Funny thing is that the second woman might be going to church to fight the first business owner for using juju to tie her destiny and business. I'm not to be a tribalist here but that is one thing I love about my Igbo brothers; they'll keep smiling with you even when you bargain ridiculously, but try that with a Benin woman, and you might regret why you opened your mouth to say anything. Again I'm not trying to start any tribal argument; just stating what I've experienced from living in Benin for 20 years.
