How Does One Avoid The Nipost N500 Service Charge? by adanny01(m): 10:50am On Sep 25, 2018
We all know Nipost has increased the service charge from N200 to N500 for receiving international small packet.

This is discouraging especially for such items we order that are worth less than N1000.

I called the Nipost customer care to comfirm the legality of the charge, they did confirm its legal. That means one has to pay.

At the post office, i met a Reverend father who made a plea for donation of a Piano from US, it came quite alright, but Nipost put a handling charge 2 times the value of the Piano. As we discussed, the issue has been on for 2months as he has refused to receive the item sent to him for free.

Yes i agree handling charges should be charged but Nipost should find a standard way of charging not abitrarily like they do.

Secondly, i made a small order of 9 items collectively worth N5700, Nipost is expecting me to pay N4500 for all items even as one item is wort $1 but i have to pay N500 for it. They suggested next time i should ask the sender to just put the item in a ordinary envelop like a letter and they will not charge a kobo.

Who has experienced doing that especially with AliExpress?

You wont believe how small mine is. I wasted over an hr and threatened to abandon some of the items but they insisted, if i want my package, i must pay N500 each.

Like i said, i called their customer care line, they said the charge is so.

Now, is the charge location depending?

I have 5 items i am expecting, they told me alot of people are complaining and i am not the first to reject an item based on that charge. Its either i pay or they keep it for 3months before initiating return.

What qualifies one to be free?

How is the packaging?

It begins to look like the charge is location and packing dependant.

White parcel is free.. Brown was charged..
Both parcels were valued at $3
Free parcel weight 0.019kg
Paid parcel weight 0.002kg
So i can't really say criteria for pricing

Most small packet items like phone cases, cable, chargers accessories are free. I do receive so many packages free, depending on the weight. The 500 the staff collected from you for a small packet is not official. Anytime you’re charged for a small packet, request for a receipt or change your address to where there is a big post office

Baba, show me the way.

I still pay 500 naira for the delivery I received today.

Is there a special format or formula to systematically avoid paying the 500 naira.

I have collect/receive delivery using different post office both on the mainland and island yet I was still asked to pay 500 naira.

The money is justify when post office bring it to my address like today and some delivery but when I have to go to their office and still required to pay 500 naira, that isn't justified. grin cheesy

I spent over an hour in the post office trying to see if they would budge to my request to pay 1k for 3 packets but they adamantly told me to choose which to carry.

This is the catch, i didnt receive the item in the main post offfice of the state, my post office is Kafanchan in kaduna state. The main post office being Kaduna central and the sub mains are Zaria, Kafanchan. I was told that the Kaduna main would register all the international packets before forwarding to Kafanchan a known number, Kafanchan in turn has a specific account (a first bank acc) they deposit N500 for each international packet they deliver and they have to account for such monies with Kaduna.

This detail i got made me give up, because if someone was charging extra, i was not in the right place to appeal.

I requested for a receipt, they told me non was available. I had to force them to give me the small stamped slip i posted in the opening post. I even faked a call to the secretary of the Nipost post master General but they were unshakable.

I don't use to pay at ikorodu post office. In fact the woman told me that I don't have to pay for small packages.. It was kind of strange to me though at first because I do pay at oshodi post-office before relocating

There are packets that you are expected to pay for and there are some that you don't pay for officially. Received 5 packets last week and didnt pay for any but whenever I pay, they issue original EMS receipts (a cheque lookalike) not the type OP posted. If I'm demanded to pay any charge contrary to the official rates, I decline!

That shouldn't be, at least, my PO do give the EMS receipts. If they can't provide that, then, its fraud. #MyOpinion

Thank you for this eye opener.

Meanwhile, i used the information to engage their Twitter handler. It seems they cannot help cause he kept posting me back and forth.

After my last received packet, 2 weeks went by and no packet came when i was still expecting 5 of 9 items ordered. I thought they hijacked my packets as punishment for complaining. I went by to inquire if i had a packet to collect but non. I recieved a call this morning that i have a packet.

So i emailed my complain to pmg@nipost.com.ng which i found on their website. I was promptly called by the pmg's assistant, he asked me to go get packet and not to ask for receipt or argue but do as they ask, then call him before leaving. I did as he asked and called, he asked me to give the phone to the person who attended to me. The man refused saying he is not authorized to speak for the office. I asked, "who is?". He said, "he is not around". The man over the phone asked me to tell him if he does not take the phone his job is on the line. Instead, I begged the attendant to have a min conversation as it is just to confirm somethings.

He accepted the phone, answered some few questions but at a point refused to talk and handed back the phone to me that he cannot answer further questions. The man over the phone said he has gotten what he needed and will take it up from there then get back to me.

From his tone, he was furious.

So far, i have spent N2500 to receive 5 packets worth $6.73 cumulatively (approx the same amount) weighing 0.040, 0.030, 0.013, 0.050 and 0.030kg.

I'm happy you took that step. PMG is very responsive and decisve when contacted. Let's see how this goes, but be rest assured, you'll see the difference soon.

We are our problems in this country.
