Luxury means "something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely NECESSARY". With this explanation, iPhone is not a luxury good if I deem it necessary and can afford it.
this isn't the definition of luxury.
Luxury don't in face, add to pleasure or comfort

Like I opined earlier, by luxury, it means "non essential" but "desirable". Not a question of absolute necessity. Luxury goods aren't necessary at all

By all characteristics of luxury goods (both in economics and semantics, at any instance, the latest iPhone model is a luxury good.

Why should I settle for the cheaper option if I can afford an expensive phone?
This is one of the cardinal feature of luxury goods.
You buy them because you can "afford" them, not because they're "important". In other words, you buy them to express your status of which if you can't afford them, you wouldn't be affected.

Items as "simple" as fashion wears can be luxury.

Luxury takes the prices of contemporary items into consideration, forgetting about the extraneous perks

It has nothing to do with affordability. The fact that a man can afford a Louis Vuitton watch doesn't strip it off of being luxury even if he's not rich

So does the Multi Millionaire who buys a custom made $2M Rolls Royce Phantom if he deems it necessary and can obviously afford it..
Paying a Premium for a NECESSITY which has capable alternatives in my opinion defines luxury, that you can afford it is immaterial..

I disagree pls, like I said luxury is relative. All of us here can as well be using imose and bluboo phones since they are all phones na. If I can afford a phone of 200k which I feel I need and it's important to me maybe for reasons best known to me,how is that luxury?

You are shifting the goal post here, asked a question and you have not answered. Is the Google pixel also a luxury good or are we going to pretend that they aren't expensive?

apt.
Seeking luxury has nothing to do with affordability.
But affordability comes in when the question of "means of gratification of the wants" is raised.
And that's why a lazy "yoot" can go and sell his kidney or Gee just to buy Mercedes... Seeking luxury when they can't afford it.

Make una leave ppl to buy their iPhone na, whether luxury or non luxury, e nr matter, so long the buyer dey satisfied no wahala. Make una remember say to some people, na MTK processors dem need, going for snapdragon chips na luxury to dem grin. Different users get wetin dem need, for me for instance, aesthetics must be properly ticked, plus my love for symmetry means something like the 'notch' na dead on arrival as far as aesthetics is concerned. To some paying an extra $60 for additional 64gig of internal memory na luxury, to others na the other way round, to some, any phone above 40k na luxury (I meet this type every week), meaning anybody using the likes of Redmi note 4 and above na wasters according to their gospel, so make una stop pointing fingers because others dey point at una too grin. So wetin b d definition of luxury? From wetin I understand, we all are LUXURIOUS in one way or the other in the type of phone we use.

The Google Pixel as a brand is a Niche product and the Samsung Galaxy as a brand has MANY products to cater to ALL manners of demography and non of these devices are selling for $1500 like the iPhone XS Max.. shocked

Make una leave ppl to buy their iPhone..
It's simple.
If we are all to choose phones or cars without having to pay, I'm sure you'll chose redmi note 4 and Honda EOD, ba? cheesy cheesy

Given that price isn't a factor, that choice you'll make is LUXURY, not what you can afford.

I really don't have "apita" ds afternoon cheesy
Maybe I'm being critical about the meaning of luxury (especially the economics perspective of it)
IPhone Xs max ticks all boxes of a luxury product.

Anyone who disagree can research more on it. kiss

Exactly the point I was trying to make. Luxury is relative, na your need and money at hand go determine wetin person go use.
