The girl coughed a few times, and Frank turned around to look at her, naked under the sheets. Her bronze complexion shone under the white lights of the room; slim waist, wide hips, and big round butt. She told him she was 24, and when he told her his age, she didn’t even flinch. It was a rule of his never to go below 25, but with this girl, he had to make the exception. Apart from having a great body, her personality was so appealing to him. She reminded him of his ex wife earlier on in their relationship.
Never had he thought he and Esther wouldn’t work. They had been so much in love for years, but things changed after the marriage, and Esther’s family members started getting in her ear. It had gotten worse when Frank had started losing weight all of a sudden, and rumors started making rounds that he had gotten infected with the deadly virus. He had gone from having a 6 ft 2 athletic body, to an unattractive lanky stature that clothes looked horrible on. Esther didn’t care at first, but the freaking bloggers wouldn’t let the story die. People around her started asking about it was all the time, and she ended up losing her banking job over it.

Money from his writing wasn’t coming in abundantly at the time, and things got pretty hard. Esther finally decided to go for a test, and when she found out she was negative, she left him; five years of marriage gone. They didn’t even have a kid together. Even when he finally went for a full medical checkup and found out he was also negative, and that he had lost all that weight because he was diabetic, she still didn’t want him back. He wouldn’t say he was a saint either, as he had had a couple of girls on the side at the peak of his career. Now, he was 41, 4 years after the divorce, and he still hadn’t found love again.

A flash of bright light from the Plasma TV on the wall caught his eye; he robbed his nose bridge a few times and Put his glasses back in place as he focused on the TV. There was news about a terror attack in Paris. A couple of Arabs had gone on a crazy rampage, stabbing and killing multiple people in a park, before they were gunned down by the police. He wondered how the family members of the victims would feel knowing their loved ones had lost their lives. Why do innocent people always have to die this way? He thought to himself.

The girl turned around, and without opening her eyes, she found his arm and put it over her body, making him resume the spooning position. He moved in closer, holding her tightly. She moaned silently and went back to sleep. After his divorce, he had sworn not to ever fall in love again. He didn’t ever want to put another woman through what he put Esther through, so he lived a solitary life, and paid for sex whenever he needed to. Tomorrow morning, the girl in front of him would be gone, and maybe he would never see her again. He felt it was best that way; no one gets hurt, and everyone leaves happy, no strings attached. The way he looked at it, he always got inspired to write a new novel with every new girl he got with, so at least he got something out of his philandering ways.

His phone started to vibrate on the side stool by the bed on his side, and he quickly turned around to get it, not wanting to disturb the girl’s sleep. He scratched his beard as he stared at the caller ID, wondering why his agent would be calling him this late. He sat up in bed before picking. “Hello.” He said into the phone as he sat up in bed.” He said with a low voice.
“I knew you would be awake.” The person on the other end said.
“Why are you calling me this late? It’s…” He was saying then stopped to look at his wristwatch.
“I have a job for you, and you need to get here ASAP!”
“What are you talking about? Where is here?”
“Are you at home?”
“No. I’m…I’m somewhere on the island.”
“Perfect. Please come right now to Federal Palace hotel. Someone wants to meet you.”
“Who?”
“Fatai Mohammed.”
“I don’t know who that is.”
“Fatai Lion.”
“What tha…” Frank was saying and lowered his voice before continuing with, “Why does he want to meet me?”
“He wants you to write his biography.”
“What? Can’t you get him someone else to do that?”
“Frank, I can’t tell him no. Just get here as soon as you can.” His agent said and the line went dead.
I don
This got me asking for more! Nice one bro

Chapter 9

The brain is a magnificent organ. In times of danger, it could speed up its process to ten times its normal capability. In the split second it took the bullets from the AK 47 rifles to hit the SUV, Frank’s mind had raced through about a dozen things; why he agreed to take up this job, how much pain he would feel before he dies after the bullets hit his face, how his bloodied up body would look, what the headline of the story would read on the blogs the next day, why the sun looked so big and red as it set in the distant ahead- these and many other thoughts filled his mind before the first set of bullets hit the SUV’s windshield.

He blinked a couple of times, but he was in a frozen state. The two guys dressed in black had gotten off the back of the bikes and were walking slowly towards them, firing nonstop. It felt like heavy rain drops hitting the windshield horizontally, but the bullets weren’t penetrating. The SUV was bulletproof. The driver had put the car in reverse gear, and was backing up, but as he swerved for the car behind him, he veered off into the bush on the side of the road and hit a tree hard. They jerked back and forth in the car.

There was chaos everywhere. Cars were reversing, and some people were abandoning their cars and running into the bush. The Volvo was now parked awkwardly on the road; the two bikes blocking their path to the right, and abandoned cars to their left. There was a ringing in Frank’s ear; he could see Fatai Lion saying something to him but couldn’t make out what was being said. Everything was happening so fast. To his left, he could see one of other two SUV’s navigating through the rough driving of the other cars, trying to get to them. The third SUV was nowhere in sight. Fatai Lion was on the phone, barking out orders. The guys had noticed the car was bulletproof and had shifted their attention to shooting at the tires. Loud popping sounds of the tires busting could be heard as dust filled the air. The driver put the car in drive and was about to move forward when Fatai Lion put his hands on his shoulder and said, “Don’t move; stay here.” Frank looked at Fatai strangely, and he Fatai said to him, “Don’t worry. They can’t get to us.” The bullet rain kept going on outside. To their right, the riders of the bikes had gotten off the bikes and were heading towards the Volvo; one of them was dragging a heavy looking white sack on the floor.

One of the shooters shifted his focus from them to the SUV the security detail was in. They could have rammed the guy with their SUV, but there was an obstruction in between them. Two cars had tried to reverse, but out of panic, had hit each other, making sort of like an upside down ‘V’ sign with their cars, before getting out and running off.

When the shooter ran out of bullets and made to change cartridges, Pascal instructed the rest not to shoot before jumping out of the car. Pascal was Fatai Lion’s French army trained Togolese bodyguard. At 6 foot 4 inches tall and weighing 130kg, he was a hulk of a man. Without a gun in his hand, Pascal jumped over the bonnet of the two cars blocking him from the assassins, reaching the one closest to him just as the guy was about to raise the AK 47 and start firing again. A quick head butt left the guy woozy in the head; Pascal then proceeded to jacking him up and throwing him at the other guy who had slowly started shifting his firing aim towards Pascal. The two guys went down, letting off a few accidental discharges that had leaves and tree chips flying in the air. He was about to head over to finish them off when he noticed the other two assassins were now pouring petrol on the SUV. One of the other bodyguards was by his side now, holding a stainless steel Smith & Wesson model 500 handgun. Pascal signaled to him to finish off the two guys. Two deafening shots rang out from the large-caliber revolver as Frank walked to the other side of the SUV.

With shaky hands, one of the assassins struggled with a matchbox as he attempted to set the SUV on fire. The other one started swinging the machete in his hand at Pascal. Swoosh! Swoosh!! Pascal jumped backwards twice, and then jumped forward just before the assailant swung the machete at him the third time. He held the man’s machete hand with his left hand, swiftly turned around so that his back was to the man and the man’s arm on his shoulder; he then hit the back of the man’s elbow hard and a loud “Ahh!” was heard as the man’s bone snapped and the machete dropped to the floor. Pascal then proceeded to throw the guy over his shoulder. The guy hit a tree trunk face first, and collapsed to the floor.

The car was on fire now, but the other bodyguard had successfully gotten everyone out just in time. The guy that set the car on fire had the bottom half of his body on fire; running round in cycles, and screaming as he tried to take off his jeans. He eventually ran for the bushes. The car burned lazily like they had used Kerosene and not petrol; but still Pascal could feel the heat. He took a few steps back and assessed the whole area for a second before running off to join the others. They all got in the other Volvo, went in the reverse gear for a few seconds, turned around swiftly, and drove off in top speed.

Chapter 10

Kiki had dozed off shortly after Frank left. She was awoken by the constant sound of gunfire from the movie showing on the TV. She rolled over in bed to grab her phone by the nightstand. There were no missed calls or messages, and the screen showed it was 19:25. She thought it would be later as it felt like she had been sleeping for hours. She got out of bed and headed to the bathroom.

She turned on the tap and threw water on her face a few times. With hands on the wash hand basin, she stared at herself in the mirror, thinking of how she would tell Frank the truth and how he would handle it. She sighed after a while, bent over, got water in her mouth, gaggled a few times and spat in the wash hand basin.

She stopped by the kitchen on her way back to the room and rummaged through the freezer for a few seconds before coming up with an ice cold bottle of Bigi Cola drink. For many years, Pepsi had been Coke’s main competition in the country, but it seemed like Bigi Cola had edged out Pepsi out of that number two position and even gunning for the numero uno spot.

Back in the room, she got in bed and opened her drink as she settled back to watch TV. She picked up the remote control and was about to change the channel when a scene in the movie showing on TV caught her attention; a bunch of soldiers with guns raised were walking hundreds of people through the streets. A little kid who couldn’t have been more six years old broke out of the file unnoticed and ran to the back of a building. He hurried into a back building, entered a big hall, pulled a plank up from the ground to reveal an underground compartment. There were about half a dozen kids hiding there, and they told him angrily to go and find another hiding spot as the place was filled. He put the lid back on the spot, and ran over to a large piano, lifted the top part, and met the same fate. He left the place quickly and ran to through a few rooms, till he got to a dark room. He lifted up a plank on the floor of an elevated part of the room and jumped in without hesitation. In there was shit, up to his chest. He was in a septic tank with three other kids.
The scene disturbed Kiki so much and she checked the movie details. Schindler’s List was the title of the movie, and it starred Liam Neeson in a lead role. It was a movie about the Holocaust. A movie Kiki had had on her list of movies to see for so long. She sat up in bed and turned up the volume.

Chapter 11

Kiki had been too engrossed in the movie and didn’t hear him come in till he coughed and made her jump. “Freaking Bleep, Frank.” She said out loud as she cleaned off the drink that had spilled on her blue floral blouse. “You scared the shiit out of me.” She added with a chuckle. She stopped what she was doing to look at him for a few seconds before saying, “What’s wrong? You look...perplexed” He didn’t say anything back. He just stood there, leaning on the room door, staring at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?” He finally said.
She looked at him confused for a few seconds and then sighed. “I’m sorry, Frank.” She said and bowed her head in shame. “You wouldn’t have wanted to be my friend if I did.” The room was quiet for a few seconds before Kiki continued with, “So…how did you find out?”
With a funny smile on his face, Frank shook his head a few times before saying, “You have put me in deep shit, Kiki.”
“Does he know?”
Frank didn’t respond to her question, but kept looking at her till the smile on his face disappeared and he asked, “How much of what you told me is true?”
“Well…I’m not a call girl. I never was. I was there that night because I was the one that suggested that he use you for his biography, so I knew he was meeting you.” She looked up at the ceiling for a while before adding, “Every other part is true. I’m an orphan that returned to Nigeria from UK to escape sexual abuse from my adopted father. I was working at a bar Fatai frequented a lot back then. That’s how we met.” She stopped to look up at him from where she sat, wanting him to say something. When he didn’t, she continued with, “He was trying to polish his English at the time, and got attracted to me because of my British accent. We started talking, and I suggested he start reading novels and watching American movies.” She stopped to clear her throat and take a sip from her drink. “He did all that but believed his English would improve faster if he spent time with me. So, he started taking me out on dates, to different places, and we would just talk, and talk all day. He learnt pretty fast.” She said with a lost look on her face for a while before adding, “Then we fell in love. Or so I thought.”
“What do you mean?” Frank asked, appearing to really be engrossed in her story now.
“Fatai is a great guy and all, but he is a chronic womanizer.”
“Mmm!”
“I think I wouldn’t have minded much if he saved some loving for me too.” She said and took another sip from her drink before adding, “It would have been bearable if he at least had sex with me.”
“What?”
“Frank, in the two years we have been married, he has never had sex with me once.”
“Are you for real?”
“Yes.”
“Wait, what of when you were dating?” He asked and she shook her head. “That’s strange. Didn’t you talk to him about it?”
“Well, at first I thought he was gay and married me as a cover, till I found out about his numerous girlfriends.”
“You went through his phone?”
“Nope; that’s not my style. One of his girls approached me”
“That’s interesting. What did she want?”
Kiki smiled before saying, “Actually, she is the one you would have gone home with that night.” Frank looked lost, and Kiki added, “The night we met…outside the club.”
“Oh!”
“That was busty Sarah; my confidant. She informed me about one of Fatai’s girl’s that was plotting to take my spot, and…” Kiki stopped talking and sighed before continuing with, “That’s a story for another day. Anyway, Sarah told me Fatai had done some sort of Juju that prohibited him from sleeping with me, his wife.”
“But he could sleep around?”
“Yea.”
“That’s some weird jazz.” Frank said and started laughing, and laughing. When Kiki looked at him wondering what was really on his mind, he said, “It’s funny that I’m here relaxed, listening to your story when I was almost killed a few hours ago.”
“What?”

Chapter 12

After Frank narrated the whole ordeal to her, it was her turn to appear stunned. The room seemed to spin around and around, and she felt nauseated. She sat still, shocked for a while then she jumped out of bed all of a sudden and started picking her belongings from different corners of the room. “Was Scarface there?” She asked as she swung her bag across her shoulder and put her phone to her ear.
“Who?”
“The big tall guy with the nasty scar on his face…was he there?” She was speaking faster than usual now.
“Pascal?”
“Yes.”
“Yes. He was there. We would have been killed if it wasn’t for him.”
The person she was calling didn’t pickup, and with shaky hands, she put her phone in her handbag and hurried out the room.
“Wait.” Frank said as he rushed after her. She was by the front door when he got to the living room, and she reluctantly turned around slowly with a lost look on her face.
“What if the Assassins come back at night to kill me and Fatai?” She said as she let go of the door handle and sat on the couch closest to the door.
“Trust me, no one is coming back to do anything. What we have to worry about…” Frank was saying and then stopped to clear his throat before continuing with, “What we need to worry about right now is what Fatai would do to us.”
She sighed. Without looking at him, she asked, “Did you tell him anything?”
“No. He showed me a picture of you, and when he saw the look on my face, he asked if I knew you.”
“And?”
“And the assassins opened fire on the car. I didn’t have time to answer his question.”
“Then I don’t think there is a problem.”
“Kiki, your husband is not dumb. He would have put two and two together.”
“He would probably think we had something together before he met me. Fatai would never believe I would actually cheat on him.”
“But why, Kiki?”
“Why what?”
“Why did you do it?”
“I’m sorry. I guess I was really selfish. I just wanted to feel alive.” She was saying then stopped to look up at him. “I wanted to be like the female characters in your novels.”
“Mmm!”
She smiled at him before saying, “I know it sounds childish and stupid, but if you are in my shoes, you might see reason to why I did it.”
“So…where did you think it would lead to?”
“Honestly I didn’t think that far.”
“Mmm.”
The room got quiet for a while before Frank broke the silence with, “Has he called you at all today?”
“No. He sent me a text message a few minutes ago asking how I was.”
“That’s all?”
“Yes. And I replied with that I was fine and would be home in a few hours.”
“Mmm.”
“I got to go now.” She said and got up from where she was sitting. He walked behind her as she stepped out the door, and she turned back to face him. “I don’t think it would be wise to walk out your door with me right now.”
“Okay.” He said and stood there, staring at him. She leaned in and gave him a kiss on the lips, turned around and walked out the door.

Chapter 13

Frank leaned on the veranda, looking down at a quadrangle of open space. There was a standard ping pong table below with two amateurs female players trying their hand at the spot, and laughing every time either one of them played wrongly. Beside them was a more serious looking duo behind a large screen TV, playing video games. Frank focused on them for a while trying to guess how long they had been sitting there from how they sank low in their seats.

He finally got tired of the scenery below and turned around to face the cinema entrance. It was busy as usual for a Friday; people coming and going- some loitering, others taking pictures, and some others waiting for their movies to start before going in.

Then he saw her; a light skin goddess in red. Her lips looked so kissable with the right amount of lipstick on them. She caught him staring, smiled and started a slow catwalk towards him. Her red pumps, making a click clacking sound...the only sound Frank could here as she approached him. He searched his memory bank, trying to figure out how he knew her, but he came up with nothing. When she was inches away from him, she placed her hands flat on his chest, leaned in and gave him a kiss. And then she leaned in even more and whispered in his ear, "You should run." `As she pulled away, he smelt her fresh minty breath again, and her smooth, supple cheeks brushed his. He watched her sashay away to his right as he thought of what she had said. Then from the corner of his eye, he saw three men in black suit walking towards him. When he turned to face them, he saw them cocking the AK47 rifles in their hands. He tried to run, but it was too late. The first set of bullets hit his chest, making him do the Harlem shake dance backwards, before going over the railing. His glasses flew off his face, and a few more bullets hit his lower region as he started his decent down to the quadrangle. His hands and legs going here and there like a puppet on a string as he fell. The white native attire he had on was all bloodied up.

As soon as his body hit and shattered the ping pong table, he woke up in cold sweats; his heart beat irregular. It was a dream but it felt so real. He was still gathering his thoughts when his phone rang and startled him. Caller ID showed it was Fatai Lion. His heart beat went up again. He took a few deep breaths before picking up and saying "Hello" in a raspy voice.
"Hey Frank. Sorry for calling this early."
"No problem. You're the boss." Frank said with a little laugh at the end.
Fatai cleared his throat for a few seconds before saying, "So, the thing is, Pascal wants us to go to the police station this morning."
"Oh."
"It’s better we clear the mess early before they start looking for us."
"Good idea."
"So i called because a different car is coming to pick up."
"Okay."
"Yeah, you know the ride you normally move in was totaled yesterday."
"Yeah."
"So, Frank, expect a black Toyota Highlander by your house at 7 am sharp."
"Okay." Frank answered and grabbed his glasses by the nightstand. He looked up at the white wall clock on the wall in front of him; time was 5:45.
"See you soon Frank."
"Okay boss." Frank said and Fatai laughed lightly before the line went dead.
