Austin Okafor, a 300 level Entrepreneurship student of the Department of Management Sciences, University of Benin, has died as a result of what his colleagues called insensitivity on the part of the school management.

According to reports, Okafor had gone to the Health Centre on October, 2, 2018, for medical attention and was referred to the Uniben Teaching Hospital, on Wednesday morning, after he started urinating blood.

It was gathered that despite the emergency situation, the ambulance conveying him with no life support facilities, was still made to stop at the Student Affairs Division to obtain a clearance permit before he could be treated at UBTH.

However, after about a 35-minute delay in getting him to UBTH, Okafor died while doctors were struggling to resuscitate him at the Accident & Emergency Ward after another 15 minutes of negligence.

As a student of any federal higher institutions in Nigeria, just bear in mind that you’re on your own health wise.

Same issue happened in yabatech few years ago.

Unnecessary protocol

They should sack all the officer or protocol in that student affair.

Emergency health care in this country is generally non-existent. People die everyday from accidents and health conditions that would easily get fixed in a proper health care system in accordance with international best practices.

One of the fears I have, living in this country, is exactly this. Having an health condition that requires urgent care such as getting in a RTA, having a heart attack, coma, poisoning, severe allergic reactions etc, you're as good as dead, even if 90% of the time you'd have been saved in a proper system.

The emergency rooms present in the dilapidated health centers lack basic expertise and resuscitation equipment required to offer care. The health workers seem scared to help a dying person, if they are even available that is.

It's a gamble going out there and coming back in safely. What's more shameful is that there's nothing that's gonna be done about it. Nobody's even giving it a thought. Too bad.

My greatest regret is being a Nigerian....

This is not the first...and I'm afraid it won't be the last

We need to reform our health system, especially those at the helm of affairs...else doctors won't respond to cases like this as emergency

What makes it more painful, is that the man ruling you have no SSCE result.

We do not understand the meaning of the word Emergency in our healthcare system in this country.

We also don’t understand the value of time in an Emergency situation and how it can affect a patients life.


Most of the health/campus staffs are poorly trained or display non professional attitude to work.

It's a pity. Nigeria is full of failed systems and unnecessary protocols. He could have gone home earlier shah. may his soul rest in peace
