PAKISTAN ASSURES NAF OF INCREASED STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIP IN EQUIPMENT ACQUISITION, TRAINING, OTHERS The Islamic Republic of Pakistan has assured the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) of its readiness to strengthen its strategic partnership with the Service in equipment and spares acquisition, research and development, training and other relevant areas to further enhance professionalism and build capacity for the effective and efficient employment of Air Power. This was made known yesterday, 4 October 2018, by the Pakistan High Commissioner to Nigeria, Major General Waqar Ahmad Kingravi (Retired), during a courtesy visit to the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, at the Headquarters (HQ) NAF Abuja. While speaking during the visit, the Pakistan High Commissioner expressed his appreciation to the CAS for the warm reception accorded him and the Defence Adviser, Colonel Shahid Aziz, who accompanied him on the visit. He said he was at HQ NAF to assure the CAS of the commitment of the Pakistan Government to strengthening the existing cordial relationship between Nigeria and Pakistan, which had spanned several decades and yielded several mutually beneficial military collaborations. The High Commissioner noted that he, having once headed the Army Aviation Corp of the Pakistan Army, was familiar with peculiar requirements of air operations and would pay particular attention to ensure that the ties between the air forces of the 2 countries were taken to even greater heights. Major General Waqar also used the opportunity to commiserate with the NAF for the tragic air mishap that occurred on 28 September 2018, which led to the death of Squadron Leader Mohammed Bello Baba-Ari. In his remarks, Air Marshal Abubakar welcomed the Pakistan High Commissioner to Nigeria and thanked him for visiting HQ NAF. The CAS confirmed that the relationship between the Pakistan Air Force (PAF) and NAF was extremely cordial and had continued to grow over the past few years. He noted that the story of the successes recorded in the counter insurgency operations in the North East could not be written without mentioning the support rendered by the Pakistan Government. He recounted several occasions when the PAF had gone beyond the usual to assist the NAF. Air Marshal Abubakar therefore assured the High Commissioner that the NAF would continue to provide the necessary support and cooperation to enable him succeed. The CAS however used the opportunity to canvass for closer coordination in order to fast track the process for the acquisition of the JF-17 multirole fighter aircraft from Pakistan. He also appealed to the High Commissioner to liaise with PAF to develop a special programme for the conduct of basic fighter training for NAF pilots. It seems i was wrong on the JF-17 acquisition however based on widely available public comments, it did not seem like the NAF was still interested in the aircraft. That being said, i still wonder the reason for the delay? It is still my opinion that with the purchase of the Tucanos, the JF-17s are not the best fit for purpose aircraft for the Nigerian Air Force. |

Henry240:I think I have mentioned it in the past. Priority is for the PAF and they are trying to ramp up the numbers and increase the number of squadrons. They also haven't got the capacity at the moment to churn out enough platforms yearly at the moment. This will probably change with more orders and/or when the PAF order has been fulfilled. This is my take on it. |

Henry240:The JF-17 may not be the best aircraft out there, but lets take a look at the equipment, weapons etc integrated to it and what it will bring to the NAF. 1) PL-9C WVRAAM : we already have this, just needs a HMS with it . 2) SD-10A : will assure our air superiority needs within the region with M2000 and F-1 jets around. 3) C-802 : we've never had this but it will surely be a game changer in the gulf of guinea axis with our neighbours storing up land based ASHM's. 4) Various Chinese guided bombs and missiles for use in CT/COIN operations. 5) Aselsans ASELPOD : a recon and targeting pod. 6) Finally it can use Chinese,Israeli,Russian,American, andTurkish weapons and equipment. So the JF-17 is cheap to buy and operate is better than what we have and is almost sanctions free. |

Does Egypt still operate the Alpha Jet jet trainer, L-39ZO and L-39E jet trainers, Tucano (EMB-312A) basic flight trainer, and Grob G115EG introductory trainer? Looking for some recent pictures and numbers in service for a project. I know they operate the K-8 Karakorum jet trainer so not sure why they would keep the older jet trainers (Alpha Jet and L-39). |

numbered:I once came across an excellent article on Quwa about how the JF-17 Thunder and Denel Dynamics should partner and offer a combined fighter and munitions package using their respective products. According to the article, the JF-17 can serve as a native platform of sorts for Denel Dynamics to use as a means to market its munitions, specifically in the context of becoming a preferred vendor for countries unable to acquire sufficient numbers of Western or Russian fighters, or at all |

lionel4power:For a country like Nigeria that manufactures few defence products the JF-17 offers us a variety of options in the case of sanctions. If the Pakistani's can't fulfill our order we can copy Myanmar and order directly from China. |

lionel4power:First things first One can't win a religious socio political conflict with military might. U can contain it to manageable levels via military might. Victory lies elsewhere. As for naf CI ops it will be best to invest in additional heli borne all the round clock lift capability and fire projection capability. 2nd invest in additional isr capability with 24hr on demand persistent and availability. Overall effectiveness is directly proportional to clear cut political will and hence a clear cut military strategy. CI ops effectiveness versus cost is dependent on the availability of credible and actionable Intel. And the means / assets to do it in real time Russian way or Western way or mix ? Ones needs the means to do the above 3 , if u have the means / capability then yes the onus lies on the commanders. But do u have the means available to US NATO Russia ? But as I say ones man food another man's poison. U got to find ur own poison U want to do aerial blitzkrieg on what ? U will need targets for that My advice to naf is confidential ![]() |

Russian weapons no American weapons/equipments no Turkish weapons/equipments yes provided they have the clearance for US/EU components used in their systems. And provided somebody is willing to invest money and time for the integration of the same. Also no weapon is sanction free perse, provided u manage to piss the right guys |

nemesis8u:My understanding is the JF-17 is on open source architecture,so we don't have to be restricted to one supplier/nation. |
| Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by Nobody: 5:34pm On Oct 05, 2018 |
numbered:what is open source architecture in the first place ? It is something which most of us take it literally , if that was the case then cross platform integration would have been a breeze across all fighters around the world. Only Gripen to some extent has managed it. There r limitations to what u can integrate and it depends on lots of factors like SWaP , access to source codes , compatibility with various LRUs and onboard sensors etc etc And importantly the willingness of foreign OEMs to integrate their products on a foreign aircraft which in the first place is subjected to geo political realities. |

"What's the first thing you're going to do when you get home?" Go riding with the Parabats, of course! First weekend back home: Ebola free, no malaria (sorry to disappoint you Alex/africaken ) and with my girl on a business trip in Europe, am riding, golfing and sampling craft beers in the Free State with Parabat mates .

numbered:Yes and also what can be integrated without any problems Weapons or avionics integration is a time consuming and expensive process and not necessarily successful or feasible on a case by case basis Eg. Python 5 WVR AAM was being integrated on LCA, during test flight the aerodynamic interaction of python 5 with LCA windflow was creating vibrations on the missile itself leading to risk of unsafe seperation. The solution will require changes to either the missile or the fighter which neither party is willing to risk as the risk of very high cost and time required is huge. No OEM will do that. So u see nothing is as simple as it sounds. |

For now we know the NAF is soon to receive both the Super Tucano and JF-17 Thunder. Pending delivery and induction, what stopgap measures should they implement?
