The Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has begun earnest search for his running mate as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) deadline for the submission of names of parties’ candidate expires on Monday.

By the 1999 Constitution as amended and the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, no candidature is complete without a running mate.
THISDAY sources close to the Atiku camp said at least three technocrats and two politicians have been penciled down for the position.

The technocrats are, former governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Prof. Charles Soludo; former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina; and former Managing Director of Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON), Mr. Chike Obi.

The politicians being considered for the number two position are, former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, and the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu.

According to a source, the candidate and the PDP hierarchy are still undecided on the zone the position should be allotted. But he said the scope had been narrowed down to the South-west and the South-east.

“We would have to weigh the electoral value of both zones and decide where we would allot it,” the source said, explaining that there was the need to maintain a balance between the existing political configuration, which requires the party to challenge the dominance of the APC in the high voting South-west by picking a running mate that would challenge the electoral advantage of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo; and the need to retain the loyalty of the South-east that had remained a PDP stronghold.

Both zones were believed to have helped Atiku to neutralise the Northern zones’ delegates’ votes that went to Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal during the presidential primary on Saturday.

A source told THISDAY that the matter would be trashed out tomorrow at a meeting of the presidential candidate with the party hierarchy.
Apart from zoning, Atiku is also said to be considering age and knowledge of the economy and economics as two major criterions for the selection of the running mate.

According to a source, the presidential candidate thinks his running mate has to be a much younger person as a strategy to appeal to the army of youths, which is already up in arms against the old brigade.

Atiku is, however, said to be insisting that such a young man must also have deep knowledge of the economy as his focus is on the revival of the economy to create jobs for the teaming unemployed population.

“His challenge, therefore, is how to strike the balance between getting a youthful running mate and an economy savvy candidate. Both must be rolled into one,” a source said, explain that this might have informed the short list that was revealed to THISDAY.

I prefer PETER OBI to be the VP come 2019. That guy is super dynamic and will do well in growing and building the economy of our great nation. He isnt only a politician, but also a technocrat that is well read and intelligent.

This bubble, no doubt will burst in 2019.

2019 is the final battle to liberate Nigeria from ultra corrupt politicians (imagine Atiku/Ekweremandu for a second!) spearheaded by Atiku, IBB, OBJ, Saraki and their supporters.

2019 is surely a battle between those who genuinely seek Nigeria's progress and those who want to return us to the dark days of corruption which witnessed wanton stealing of our common wealth.

One thing I am very sure of is that we still have more sane Nigerians than insane ones. The insane ones are louder though but we shall see.

Soludo and Akinwumi Adeshina.

If you know, you know.

If we are keeping tribal sentiments aside, these two men have worked in sensitive positions that has to do with growing our economy, pairing an industrialist who has worked with Customs and any of these two will be a great team.

PDP is in tight position now. You go for SW, there is possibility for SE not to support him. If they go for SE, SW will ask what will be their gain. It is very dicey... grin grin grin

Mehn! I never supported Atiku but his strategy is overwhelming. Even though I am Igbo, I will love him to settle for Adesina. He has a good mindset of what the Economy should be like and how to track it to perfection. But, my Igbo brothers wouldn't find it funny at all, as it will be seen as marginalization of the Igbo tribes.

The best option if he wants to win the hearts of the Igbos should be Peter Obi. He did justice to Anambra during his governance. He paved way for industrialization and good structures before Willie took over.

Soludo, he is a professor in Economics but was among those that ruined this economy. I once see him as a mentor but not anymore. I respect likes of Okonji-iwuala and Femi Adesina.

if Atiku picks a vp from SW, he should forget it. yorubas will not give him block votes, regardless. the SW votes will be divided ni. in the south we have 3 regions...SE,SS and SW...give the slot to SE and automaitcally the SS is yours as well. give the slot to SW and you loose the SE and SS and the yorubas(not SW coz more than 35% that make up that figure are from SE n SS) will still give you less than 50% of their votes. or are you telling me that 7m + 8m + 40% of 14m(5.6m for SE and SS folks in the west) which gives us 20.6 million votes is less than SW 8.4m votes?(14m - 40% of 14m for easterners and south south folks resident in SW). Atiku, looking at these numbers, 20.6m against 8.4m, I believe you know what to do.

to those quoting me saying these words of mine are lies, get out of your feelings. go to any school in lagos, for example, ask for the class register in the case of a secondary or primary school. Do the maths as to the proportion of SE and SS to SW pupils. what ever u get juxtapose it with their parents'/guardians/elder brothers votimg power. no emotions
