Been a very long time I posted here. This thread was instrumental in my basic understanding of GRE and the application process. Tho still learning...

I wrote my GRE today at JKK Lagos and it was quite an experience. I didn't consider my self well prepared as I registered in July while following the thread, but bank work didn't avail me much time to study, I'd say my preparation is roughly up to a month, I downloaded the materials and bought kaplan hard copy which I studied from Parle to Parle with occasional checking of e copies once or twice.

Cutting the long story short, thanks to God almighty

hey guys whats up?
i just retook the gre yesterday and i actually improved .
q=161
v=152
0verall=313
wanted a 160+ for my quant and i got it. gotta say tho,i have never been the guy to stress over an exam. i have always been that nonchalant guy when it comes to tests but GRE man that gets to you BIG TIME. NEVER HAVE I EVER CAME ACROSS A MORE STRESSFUL TEST THAN GRE.
could be mainly cause i made it a big deal in my head or maybe it is. most people say it was the same for them too so thats that. cheesy

so yeah i got QVQVQ and i did not study vocabulary or anything this time around.
advice for all the math/engineering applicants- focus on the quant section since ,i believe, thats the admission committee would look for(most schools). i wish i scored 170 on than but it is what it is and i am happy regardless.
one thing i noticed your score does not reflect how many questions you got wrong ,some questions weigh more so getting them wrong means a lower score so practice hard questions to increase your chance of answering them correctly with the time you have.
as for study prep , nova(very helpful for the math section!!! specially for remainder questions which i got two of them yesterday) ,Manhattan all series and official ETS prep guide is enough.i think anything else would be an overkill.
and one last thing practice trumps reading/studying. evenif you are not familiar with the subject practice questions on that would go along way than to contemplate on the topic for days.
if yall have questions about gre ,i am here to share my two cents.
thanks.

Hello! Nice scores you've got there! I also wrote my exam yesterday but with a very low score of 288. I started practicing with Manhattan 5lb but switched to Magoosh videos midway. I also didn't do practice tests under exam conditions until this week. I was super nervous from the evening before the exam up until I got in.
One question, how were you able to increase your score this time around? Could you please share materials you used? I'm not in a hurry to take another test but at the same time, I am working with deadlines for fall 2019.
Would love to hear from you soon!

Hello people,i finally took the gre yesterday and got an abysmal score of 280.i was so disappointed esp after putting in months of active study.well i have to move on so i thinks ishould retake the exams bur i need to be sure i can get better scores so for those who had to retake the exam, what particular thing did u do.before the exam i was already having serious headache, the RC made it worse.i love to read but time factor did not allow me assimilate the passages to answer correctly so pls i need strategies for Rc.
Secondly,if i decide to retake in january 2019,would it still be possible to meet up fall deadline? Finally i just got admission to msc in one of the state universities here in nigeria,do u think i should follow through with it or wait to see if the abroad works?pls i need urgent advice my people.thanks

Hello guys,

Tried following the thread from beginning though I skipped some pages

I want to apply for a masters in business analytics in the US

Elect/Elect engineering 4.67/5.00
1yr consulting work experience

GRE: December 2018
TOEFL: January 2019

GRE approach (please help critic this):
AWA - Kaplan & Barron
Quantitative - Barron, Gruber, Nova & Manhattan
Verbal - Gruber & Barron

Schools I am considering are:

Georgia tech
University of Maryland
University of Illinois Chicago
University of California, San Diego

I know I am yet to write the GRE and this may heavily influence the choice of schools but I would appreciate advice on these ones and possibly others I can consider to land full funding. At this point, I just want to have a large pool of options to review.
Target number of applications is three.

Please I am here to learn, every opinion is welcome

heavy CGPA... nice plan.Your GRE plan is cool. carry one. I know little of those schools. hopefully gurus here would help later.

fellow elect elect engr. thumbs up.

January is not bad to take the exam. But be sure of the deadline of the school. that should guide your target.

Hi. I think you're on the right track. You have a very good profile. If you're gunning for Fall 2019, you may have to bring your exams a little closer so you can meet the deadlines for most schools. Say late November/Early December.

For the quant, Manhattan 5lb Nova as well as the ETS Official Guide should suffice. Get used to the tricks and shortcuts as well as working with time. As a first class Elect Engr, this shouldn't be a problem cheesy You might also want to go through the Magoosh practice videos (Link few pages back)

For the verbal, ETS official guide, Princeton and the Magoosh practise videos should help. Also, use flashcards to memorize frequent GRE words. You can get the magoosh flashcard app from playstore or use this flashcard I made on quizlet (https://quizlet.com/_3chka6).

Can't really advise for the AWA as I didn't prepare for it. But I've heard the ETS guide and Kaplan's chapters on AWA are very good.

Good choice of schools btw. Should you do well in the tests, you really do stand a chance. You should look at UT Dallas too. They have a good Business Analytics program. Not sure it's funded tho. Search for prospective schools on thegradcafe.com/survey to have an idea of the funding opportunities for your program.

Goodluck.

Hi. Sorry about your score. Sucks when you put in much effort and don't get your desired result. I hope you identified areas you were lacking in while taking the exam. Your RC for instance needs to be worked on. I suggest daily reading of articles on aldaily.com, aeon.co, scientificamerican etc. This would help you get familiar with recondite articles and in turn help your assimilation of the RC passages. I don't know if you did this in your first attempt but taking a lot of practice tests will help you work with time.

I think if you work on your deficiencies asap and take the exam by december, you can still meet most deadlines for funding. As regards your ms admit in the state uni, I can't make the decision on your behalf but if I were the one and I had no alternatives, I would pick the MS in the Uni while I work on my US applications. If it works out, japaa, but if it doesn't, I'll complete my MS and be better armed for PhD applications in the US.

Goodluck with everything. I trust you'll bounce back and get a better score.

Used Barron's for math and Kaplan for verbal.

Didn't simulate the actual practice conditions during my study though. I just strove to finish all the topics in Barron's math and all the verbal in Kaplan. Also used the Kaplan for my verbal. If I had focused more attention on my verbal, I would've scored a 160 in it too.

All in all, 321 is manageable

You have a really good GPA there. All you need to do now is ace your standardized tests. Believe and work hard towards achieving a great score.
I would advice that you contact Professors Of Interest from now. I hear it is possible without having your test scores ready, but you will need to let them know you are going to take them soon (please I should be corrected if I am wrong). Also as suggested by masterforcell, Princeton and Magoosh materials are helpful. Magoosh has provided answers to most quantitative practice questions online. I think they have videos for this, although I didn't use them.
For the AWA (I got a 4/6), what helped me especially in the argumentative essay aspect is that every statement made has many possibilities. It is either true or false, or an assumption without stated evidence. Also in some cases where one statement holds false then the next statement would be made false. I hope I am making some sense. Always ask yourself could this statement be false and why. Then you would have some points to argue about. Kaplan helps with this. But make use of numerous materials to have a wide scope of what to expect. Each material has its strengths and weaknesses.
Also on the exam day time yourself well for the essays. I didn't have enough time to proof read my first essay due to poor time management. Also try practising using the topics on ETS website.

For TOEFL, Notefull videos are really helpful. Although I've never posted my scores here, I got 105/120, R-30, S-22 (quite low), L-25 , W-28. Notefull videos would help you a long way. Moreover the GRE drilling helped my perception and mindset towards TOEFL.
Please be confident on test day, no need to panic. Panic doesn't help at all.

I wish you the best. Write excellent personal statements and get letters of recommendation ready. If possible draft the LORs and ask your supervisors if they could use these letters. You would be surprised that they respond positively.

Fall2019. Yes we can. Sorry for any typos.

Would love to hear from you soon!
you can definitely retake the test while you prepare your other documents ready(SOP and what not ). and yeah i was able to increase my 152 quant score to 161 cause i practiced a lot of questions basically.
see the thing is it depends on the school you want to apply to. are you from engineering background? is the program you intend to enroll at math intensive or is it more verbal reasoning intensive? did you see what the scores(average scores since the scores vary) of students admitted to your intended program are ?
the last time i took the test i just took it for the sake of taking it and i was studying in balanced way half of my time on verbal(stressed alot on this cause my first language is not English )and half of it on quant. and i took it ,sadly i got 305(152 quant).
so i started contemplating a lot looking at yocket admits and their gre score. thats when i realized i needed 160+ score on the quant since my intended program was data science or cs,to be competitive that is . i thought if i score good on the math atleast i wont get rejected on the basis of my gre score.
so comes the strategy....focused on math since thats what i am better at. i did Manhattan back to back and nova and the official guide.
i practiced what i thought was challenging me(basically taking me time to figure the problem out since most of them are solvable but the how fast is the key) like remainder questions (got two of them on the test, use nova for this) ,probability and counting(got only one question) and standard deviation(had difficult ones the last time but fortunately none on this time around)
i did almost zero ,yes zero study on verbal cause last time i took a lot of time studying vocab and i did not see none of them so this time i sad Bleep it!! grin i aint worrying about vocab. i did some RC questions from the GMAT though.
uhhh whatelse, thats it i guess. sorry if im all over the place.
