‘Displacing Buhari will be tough’, ‘Start from where we stopped’ — five things Obasanjo told Atiku

by Chinedu Asadu

One of the most interesting stories in the history of Nigerian politics played out on Thursday when former President Olusegun Obasanjo reconciled with Atiku Abubakar, his deputy while in power. Obasanjo and Atiku had fallen out during their second term in office and until Thursday afternoon, the two had been on warring paths while all the attempts to make peace fell like a pack of cards.

But the race to dislodge President Muhammadu Buhari seem to have ended their more than 15-year row as Obasanjo has endorsed Abubakar for president.

Abubakar led some prominent personalities to Obasanjo’s residence in Abeokuta, Ogun state, and during their meeting, Obasanjo told Abubakar that he had accepted his apology.

What were other key things he said during his meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate?

ATIKU HAS CHANGED FOR GOOD

Obasanjo told his former deputy that having reviewed what went wrong in the past, he (Atiku) has “re-discovered and re-positioned” himself.

According to him, “as I have repeatedly said, it is not so much what you did against me that was the issue but what you did against the Party, the Government and the country.

“Obviously, you have mended fences with the Party and fully reconciled with the Party. That’s why today, you are the Presidential Candidate of the Party.

In addition to appreciating all that the Party has done for you, may I advise you to work together with all those who contested for the Party’s flag with you as a team for your campaign.”

DISPLACING BUHARI WILL BE TOUGH

Obasanjo, who has at various times said Buhari has failed Nigerians, also said among the other presidential aspirants in the PDP, Atiku is the best fit to displace the president during the 2019 polls.

He also hinted the road to 2019 is going to be a “tough” and “dirty” one.

The former president said: “For me, relatively and of all the aspirants in the PDP, you have the widest and greatest exposure, experience, outreach and possibly the best machinery and preparation for seeing the tough and likely dirty campaign ahead through.”

‘ATIKU BETTER THAN BUHARI’

Obasanjo added that Atiku has what if takes to run a better government. According to him, the PDP presidential candidate has the “capacity to perform better than the incumbent.”

He said Abubakar “surely understand the economy better” and has “business experience, which can make your administration business-friendly and boost the economy and provide jobs.”

“You (Atiku) have better outreach nationally and internationally and that can translate to better management of foreign affairs. You are more accessible and less inflexible and more open to all parts of the country in many ways,” he added.

‘START FROM WHERE WE STOPPED’

He noted there have been gaps created between the time both of them left office in 2003 and now, and urged the presidential candidate to remember the “democratic” government they ran between 1999 and 2003. He also asked Atiku to always consider merit against blood relationship, against nepotism which some Nigerians have accused Buhari of.

He said: “When you become Nigerian President which, insha-Allah, you will be, remember what we did together in government – we ran an administration by Nigerians for all Nigerians where merit and performance count more than blood relationship, friendship or kith and kin.

“Although some time and ground have been lost, you should endeavour to start from where we stopped and recover some lost ground, if not time.”

OBASANJO HAD ONE DEMAND FROM ATIKU — RESPECT FOR RULE OF LAW

The ex-president also told his former deputy to always remember that the Nigerian constitution “must be scrupulously defended.”

“Please uphold truth, integrity, principles, morality and fight corruption, crimes and insurgency,” he requested of him.

“I make one demand and one demand on you today, I need you to say before God and man that you will always remain irrevocably committed to upholding all the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the whole country will remain your single indivisible constituency.”

He didn’t end without taking a swipe at Buhari in that regard: “Constitutionalism, popular participation and inclusiveness are pre-conditions for reversing the deficits of the past three and half years,” he said, adding: “They will ensure abiding faith in our indivisibility, oneness and faith in the survival of all against none.”

Amazingly, even in the face of a reality, some people still hide the truth. Nigeria has never been this devided since independence. It's glaring that the government of the day is of nepotism, religious bigotry and tribalism. Our constitution allows us to practice any religion of our choice. Shii is a faction of Islam, which buhari and elrufai joined force to attack, for no reason. There are various factions of Islam. We have the sunnis, the Shiites, ahmadiyya( whose leader was Ahmad, a pakistanis), etc. Wetin konsain buhari konsain religion? Elzakzaky was granted bail on a couple of occasions yet he has refused to allow him go. There's no respect for rule of law in this country under buhari. He claims to be fighting corruption yet, tinubu who has mortgaged our Lagos, rotimi amaechi, elrufai who almost sold Abuja remain untouchable. When kemi adeosun left, her replacement should be from same region because her tenure hadn't expired and the replacement should have been a Christian. Instead, buhari went and picked a Muslim northern lady to replace her. That's impunity. In a country like Nigeria, any leader who puts religion on his head won't go far. Buhari is simply fulfilling his religious agenda. Scores were killed by herdsmen in the Christian dominated north central but he turned a deaf ear to their plight. A herdsman was killed and the killer was quickly tried and handed a sentence of death by firing squad. What a leader! He could proscribe ipob in a hurry, the organisation agitating for a sovereign state which is allowed under our constitution , those who do not carry firearms but has refused to proscribe herders who kill, rape and maim on a daily basis. His service chiefs disobeyed him but has refused to remove or replace them. People were killed in benue but refused to condone them. Instead of going to benue, he headed for nasarawa, asking ortom to meet him there. What a leader. We don't want such a bad leader anymore. We want to be united again.

If restructuring was compatible with the constitution each region would already be self dependent.

How does Atiku hope to achieve restructuring with this oath?

An APC Top Analyst Writes On Atiku's Chances

*FROM A CORE BUHARIST:*

Atiku : Why the Maths Scares Me
~ Isah Mansur

Yes, the Maths scares me. Atiku will sweep SS and SE; sweep most of NC especially Benue, Kwara, Plateau and Kogi (forget about Yahaya Bello's boasts); he will have significant votes in Taraba, Gombe, Adamawa and Kaduna. If he's able to carry Kwankwaso, Lamido and Tambuwal along, he will have significant votes from Kano, Jigawa and Sokoto states respectively. Even in Katsina, his relationship with the Yar'adua family would count on his behalf especially in Katsina central.

Furthermore, being a contest between two northerners, the religious and tribal sentiments that played against GEJ will not be there. Atiku will get votes from many northern states especially those that have been PDP before 2015. The economic hardship people are undergoing at the grassroot, something this government seems to take for granted, will also count on Atiku's favour as well as the below average performance of many APC governors.

The SW is also not a good vote bank for PMB presently. The margin between APC and PDP, judging from Ekiti and Osun elections, is still very narrow despite all the might of incumbency deployed in those elections that may not be there during the general election. The Tinubu political camp is now barely surviving by the whiskers in the southwest.

With all these pointers, I feel the government and its supporters must tight their belts if actually we want defeat Atiku. Dismissing him as corrupt and not trustworthy, as the Presidency seems to be doing, is not enough to defeat him at the polls. Many Nigerian passing through unprecedented hardship would hardly understand the benefits of fighting corruption and having an honest leader at the top. The APC and the government must be able to show Nigerians why they are better than Atiku in improving their lives rather clinging to the now worn-out "we are the honest people" argument. Hungry Nigerians would hardly understand that.

This is my humble opinion, looking at the reality devoid of my Buharists sentiments.

Isah Mansur.

I don't know if someone else feel this way with me.
I have hatred for Buhari from the first day he assume the number one position in the country.

Since he became the first man of this country , I have always been careful not to pronounce the word "PRESIDENT" attached to Buhari's name.

That man is not my president.

I wish Atiku will seize this opportunity to drag him out of that office.

I hate that man, no be small.
