LOUT is the correct English word to mean what most Nigerians use TOUT for. Tout originated from pronunciation ineffectiveness. Tout has its correct meaning which isn't negative

Colonial masters basterdized "Ameer" (an Arab word close in meaning to leader) to "Emir" and incorporated it into their English language. Is Emir an Arabic word? No!

In Nigeria, I can 'toast' a girl and be held in 'go-slow' but in English semantics, not possible.
In Nigeria, Noobody shouldn't be a TOUT but because this is English, he is a tout. So are all of us "touting".

Chief, save yourself from sophistry.
Try know more about Creole, hybrid variety of English, and international English, with an open mind.
This is English in discuss, not another language.
It's very simple, what does tout mean in the English language?

In what English variety does tout have a negative meaning?

Are Nigerians native users of English?

If Britain was the origin of English, are non-British, but native speakers not native users of English?

genabc:

It's not in my attitude to reply people with rude mannerism but let me educate you. Firstly, there's nothing like approved meaning in language but conventional accepted at a particular period of time. That's why in the 17th and 18th centuries, gay means "good" but now "homosexualism" meat means "bread" but now "flesh" etc. U see, the Oxford dictionary is worldly accepted because it's from British which is the origin of English and it will limit d level of disparities both in meaning & pronunciation (phonetics). However, when it comes to semantics and pragmatic level of linguistics analysis, it's open. That's why we have local (might be slang) National (Tout in Nig) and international usage of of words, it's all beauty of Language. That's why legal practitioners will study a document within the ambit of law and it jurisdiction ( local, national and international law). These are English words that have different meaning in different countries- "Brat" means brother in Poland, "fart" means speed in Norway, "gift" means poison in Germany, Kiss means "wee" in Sweden, in USA, bin means a storage container while in UK, it means trash Can etc... U can sue anybody that calls u tout for defamation of character in Nig, all u need is an evidence which prof.Wole Soyinka and John Clark dictionaries provide. Cheers✌

Chai, this is one of the reasons I log on this thread every single day, the thrills and excitement gets my blood pumping always. But for today no need for a heart attack. Lolz

You guys have spoken eloquently and I believe your points have been heard. But I think the sentence we all have been looking for here is called "Terms of Reference".

It changes both usability and meaning based on perception and acceptance. While we all agree that the usage of the English language varies it still does not change the "Original" meaning of the said word as rightly emphasized by Protein0, but the acceptability of a change based on location and need cannot not be overemphasized as portrayed by genabc.

All in all both parties are right if we look at it critically but the fact still remains that Nairaland is an international brand, though made up by "mainly" Nigerians but we have people from other nationalities playing an important role too. Just like we have Nigerians in different works of life all around the world being active members too, so it would be a great disservice to the English language if we were to pin our usage simply on the context of location and usage, cos many People wey dey yarn for here no dey Naija oh. Lolz

But the truth is this, The word Tout as used here tends to tilt towards its original meaning which in here simply defines a Vendor or a Reseller and it has been widely accepted and used. Though some may have reservations about it based on personal understanding and perception; the true meaning based on it's "term of reference" is a Vendor or Reseller and thus we should please bring this argument to a halt and continue our peaceful coexistence.

But come oh, make una no vex the people wey dem dey call Tout no vex for the name, Na dem dey even call themselves the thing why we dey tear our pant on top their matter? I rest my case.

Or

Maybe you prevented the apps from accessing the Internet.

You can also go to system apps updater under app and clear cache.

The app has full access to the internet and yes I have cleared cache and data but it's still the same. I still can't update any of the system apps

This thread is a mini-Nairaland on its own.

From phone talk (tweaks, buying and selling) to subtle romance (they know themselves) to little politics talk (Buhari matter must come up once in a while) and then to education (thanks to our English and economics teachers).
And not forgetting the fights...! cheesy

It's almost a complete package.
