I could actually change the schools I was to report my scores to long after registration. I think they had a rule concerning being able to change them until 10 pm or so, the night before the d day. I did change mine a couple of times before writing. But once that deadline is met, you would have to pay for any other scores reported.
It might just be that there's a new policy.
Macaulay10 send TOEFL contact an email. I have done so recently and I believe they would respond soon enough by rectifying this issue.

My people i finally wrote the GRE on Thursday, my scores was so poor.

Verbal... 156
quant... 141

Please does it mean you can’t get admission with this score?
I really want to know and understand better please

The experience was quite awful on my part. I failed to practice ahead of the test.
Make sure you read all available materials and do practice test using powerprepII, I wasn't lucky to use the powerprep because I didn't have a laptop.
Also, time factor, this is very important, I didn't manage my time very well that day. Time fly like a bird especially on the verbal section it was as if they used stop watch, while the quantitative section was slow like a snail.
Thanks bro.

I can get admission with the scores but the chance of gettting funding is very slim.
If you are looking for funding make sure you ace the GRE, at least 310 upward .

you can get admitted depending on the school's. Some schools accept below 300. Truth be told, some schools don't really use cut off GRE scores.

Hello Folks. I can see a lot of progress here. A lot of Good GRE scores as well. If you need to retake the test, do not despair. Follow the invaluable advice from veterans here. It will help you.

Unpopular Opinion: Your Statement of Purpose is actually the most important document in your application when you are looking for PhD positions in the STEM field. When a Professor or someone in the admission committee reads it, it make him or her curious to see what the student has to offer. Though it is not a technical document but it should give a glimpse of the applicant's future aspirations and the reasons he or she is an ideal candidate. Many Professors take your future goals quite seriously. They believe that should fix your motivation to do a PhD. That is why doing a PhD simply because you want funding is not a good idea.

Your SOP should sell your candidacy to the anonymous person reading it. He should be curious about what you have to offer. Naturally, he will then quickly glance at your CV (Academic CV off course). Then, if he is convinced, he takes a look at your Transcript to see if you possess the prerequisite to succeed. i.e. Do research, think and develop ideas. He or she will probably want to see what a colleague or someone of like mind thinks. That is where you Letters of recommendation plays a major part.

The use of the GRE is debatable. It is mostly used to screen out applicants. Some claim they holistically consider all parts of the application. Since not only one person considers all the applications, there is likely to be some bias for certain aspects. How will you feel if your application was not read at all and just screened out because of poor test scores? Try and get a good score especially in the Quant. Most universities do not have a minimum score. Some professors do not believe in its ability to predict anything useful.Even if they badly want an applicant, you must satisfy the set minimum. Taking it is very important especially as an international Student. Everyone knows the GRE is a weird test in some regard. Doing well in it especially as an international student dispels some bizarre myth about certain foreign degrees.

There is alot of bias in the admission process. You cannot take that away from it. Human beings have that unconscious bias that they are not even aware off. For example, A Chinese Professor may be inclined to accepting a student from Tsingua University because he knows the school and will be skeptical about admitting someone from the University Of Benin. These things happen. Though Professors have to explain their choices, many cannot be questioned much because of their reputation and the grant funds they bring in. Put in your best. Take time to draft your SOP. Do not plaglarise.

Publish if you can and also try to attend conferences. Contact students in the lab you wish to get into. Trust me, they know how their Professors pick graduate students.

By the way, it is a good thing to know what your potential supervisor has been doing lately, in terms of research. Check their webpages or check databases and see their recent publications. It will help you in drafting your SOP or amplifying your areas of strength in your CV and SOP.

Cheers.

If you are offered an RA/TA, you do not need to upload a statement except if there is a short fall or a balance you need to pay(It is rare in good Programs). Also, most times, the decision for admission and funding are not made at the same time. Many of these schools have a way they process admissions. Some will ask you to upload a financial document as soon as you are offered admission. That is just normal administrative procedure. You do not need to respond as long as you still waiting for a funding decision.

Just received rejection mail from Michigan Tech citing low GP as the reason for the rejection. Though I applied for the spring admission as a litmust test as I av my eyes set on fall admission. I applied for direct PHd civil engineering.

My profile
My GP is 4.26/5.0
GRE 313(Q154, V159)

Should I drop the idea of direct PHD admission based on my GP and concentrate more on MSc. If otherwise, Pls suggest a school that is safe for me. I've applied to UW and UArK. I'm about to apply to USF but kept it on hold due to the outcome of Michigan Tech.

hey guys whats up?
i just retook the gre yesterday and i actually improved .
q=161
v=152
0verall=313
wanted a 160+ for my quant and i got it. gotta say tho,i have never been the guy to stress over an exam. i have always been that nonchalant guy when it comes to tests but GRE man that gets to you BIG TIME. NEVER HAVE I EVER CAME ACROSS A MORE STRESSFUL TEST THAN GRE.
could be mainly cause i made it a big deal in my head or maybe it is. most people say it was the same for them too so thats that. cheesy

so yeah i got QVQVQ and i did not study vocabulary or anything this time around.
advice for all the math/engineering applicants- focus on the quant section since ,i believe, thats the admission committee would look for(most schools). i wish i scored 170 on than but it is what it is and i am happy regardless.
one thing i noticed your score does not reflect how many questions you got wrong ,some questions weigh more so getting them wrong means a lower score so practice hard questions to increase your chance of answering them correctly with the time you have.
as for study prep , nova(very helpful for the math section!!! specially for remainder questions which i got two of them yesterday) ,Manhattan all series and official ETS prep guide is enough.i think anything else would be an overkill.
and one last thing practice trumps reading/studying. evenif you are not familiar with the subject practice questions on that would go along way than to contemplate on the topic for days.
if yall have questions about gre ,i am here to share my two cents.
thanks.
on to the next headace.....SOP and THEM grin

What did it cost you to register for GRE

Hi. Sorry about your score. Sucks when you put in much effort and don't get your desired result. I hope you identified areas you were lacking in while taking the exam. Your RC for instance needs to be worked on. I suggest daily reading of articles on aldaily.com, aeon.co, scientificamerican etc. This would help you get familiar with recondite articles and in turn help your assimilation of the RC passages. I don't know if you did this in your first attempt but taking a lot of practice tests will help you work with time.

I think if you work on your deficiencies asap and take the exam by december, you can still meet most deadlines for funding. As regards your ms admit in the state uni, I can't make the decision on your behalf but if I were the one and I had no alternatives, I would pick the MS in the Uni while I work on my US applications. If it works out, japaa, but if it doesn't, I'll complete my MS and be better armed for PhD applications in the US.

Goodluck with everything. I trust you'll bounce back and get a better score.

#Fall2019 #YesWeWill

Please, I have few questions to ask.

First, for me to be able to apply for fall 2019 do I have to write my GRE by december I was actually looking at January, why so soon does it take a long time to get your result?

Secondly, I'm rounding up my master program in Nigeria probably before december. I intend to use this result to apply for another master in the US due to low gpa (undergraduate) don't really have the strength for a phD, and my main goal is full funding, will I be able to meet up for fall 2019.

Hi. You get your Quant and Verbal scores immediately after the exam and the official scores (including the Analytical Writing) about 10 days after the exam. It's best to write as early as possible as most top schools have their deadlines in late december to early January. You therefore want to ensure that you have written the exams before then. However, you can still get some other schools with Feb/March deadlines that offer funding. You just have to make adequate research and contact the graduate coordinators for all your prospective schools.

I don't know how feasible it is to apply for a masters program in the US using another masters degree. You should really consider the PhD. PhDs are better funded and your masters degree will give you an upper hand. Think about it.

Goodluck

No, no stipend was given to me and the scholarship wasn't in form of stipend - if that's what you're asking.
The cost of the degree was c. $50k then they gave me $20k

The program I got into was under their business school - Fisher College of Business
I am not sure of the admission proceeding for other departments but I was not required to submit any financial statement. I also didn't even apply for the scholarship. I guess it was considered with my normal application.

They were tougher than what is in the Manhattan 8-book series. Only Magoosh's Quants and verbal sections were comparable. Never had issues with TC and SE, so was always using ETS Big Book RC compilation with timing to improve RCs - it worked like magic, those practice questions were of the same level as the real test itself.

Good day guys. Please do you think Dec 6, would be appropriate for GRE retake? By my calculation, the official score would be ready by 15th December (10 days after the test). And this same 15th is the deadline of some of the schools I want to apply to.

Do you think it's advisable to consider 6th December for a retake?

you can definitely retake the test while you prepare your other documents ready(SOP and what not ). and yeah i was able to increase my 152 quant score to 161 cause i practiced a lot of questions basically.
see the thing is it depends on the school you want to apply to. are you from engineering background? is the program you intend to enroll at math intensive or is it more verbal reasoning intensive? did you see what the scores(average scores since the scores vary) of students admitted to your intended program are ?
the last time i took the test i just took it for the sake of taking it and i was studying in balanced way half of my time on verbal(stressed alot on this cause my first language is not English )and half of it on quant. and i took it ,sadly i got 305(152 quant).
so i started contemplating a lot looking at yocket admits and their gre score. thats when i realized i needed 160+ score on the quant since my intended program was data science or cs,to be competitive that is . i thought if i score good on the math atleast i wont get rejected on the basis of my gre score.
so comes the strategy....focused on math since thats what i am better at. i did Manhattan back to back and nova and the official guide.
i practiced what i thought was challenging me(basically taking me time to figure the problem out since most of them are solvable but the how fast is the key) like remainder questions (got two of them on the test, use nova for this) ,probability and counting(got only one question) and standard deviation(had difficult ones the last time but fortunately none on this time around)
i did almost zero ,yes zero study on verbal cause last time i took a lot of time studying vocab and i did not see none of them so this time i sad Bleep it!! grin i aint worrying about vocab. i did some RC questions from the GMAT though.
uhhh whatelse, thats it i guess. sorry if im all over the place.
check out the diagnostic report and see which sections you messed up so you can try to improve.
if you still have questions let me know smiley

Thank you so much!! Just saw your message..
Yes oh, I'm from an Engineering background! (It's embarrassing) and I intend to use it for PhD applications as I'm rounding up my M.Sc. I've checked the schools I want to apply to, majority of them want a score close to 160 for Quant. I'd work on all you said.
Thank you.
