Computer Science is far better than Mech. Engineering. You will thank me 10yrs from now if you follow my advice. If not, I hope you don’t regret it.

I'd need a candid advice on this nairalanders. I'm a 300L mechanical engineering student but after my 200L, I noticed I was no more drawn to mechanical engineering as I'd have to do some courses I've no interest in.

So far, the only courses I've come to really like in mechanical engineering is mechanics, strength of material and machine designs. Reason being that I want to major in robotics.

I've had thoughts of switching to electrical and electronics engineering because of my interest in embedded systems. But, it'd take me back to 200l and I'd have to spend extra 2yrs in school. But I thought of borrowing some courses from Elect and then switching over to computer science as I've been into programming that it makes me drop my mechanical engineering's textbooks too often.

Because I had lost some money last year and my detachment from mechanical engineering, I had dropped from 1st class to 2.1 which stands at impeding my chance of getting a scholarship to further my studies in Robotics. I will not be able to come up to a first class unless I borrow tons of courses. Being that scholarships are highly competitive, I'm considering switching to computer science because it harbours my love for programming and electronics. I'm 25, and considering that I'd drop down to 200L as opposed to the 400l I'm heading towards, I was supposed to graduate by '20 but I'd be graduating by '21 if I change to computer science which is just a year difference. By then, I'd be 28.

Am I making the right choice? I really don't have the passion for mechanical again. I need some pieces of advice and possible outcomes of my decision.

Follow your hearts desire. Your age does not matter; besides you sound quite intelligent. What matters is your interest and passion in what you choose to do. My daughter had a passion for mass communication even though I would have loved her to be a lawyer. She went for mass com and she is doing very well. She has done internship in media houses here in Lagos and on each occasion she is offered a permanent job which she has so far rejected because she wants to complete her studies. Chinua Achebe switched from studying to become a doctor to English language. So my dear follow your desire.

Bro I was in this same situation a couple of years ago and finishing in mechanical engineering was probably the best decision I made. Did the same course in my second degree, my masters project was on Fuzzy logic which as you might know is related to robotics cos its mainly about automation. You can always do anything computer science later, at any time and there are professional institutions who offer what you need. You can then apply whatever you've leant to mechanical engineering. If at least you'd make 2.1 out, finish it, trust me bro, mechanical engineers are needed everywhere. Don't limit yourself now when you can broaden your horizon. Finish it.

Guy,

If you love computer science study it as a side interest.

Job prospect for Mech Engineering are higher than Co sci in Nigeria.

Especially with our oil and gas industrry. You may or may not get a job in the oil and gas/manufacturing industry but i suggest you cross that bride when you get there.

Hope your grades are still in 2.1 range?

Very very important abeg.

A dont need a degree in co. sci to get a co. sci job, but no one will hire a co.sci to do the job of a mech engr.

You are not in the US, Apply Sense abeg.
lol do you know computer science would take him to places beyond his wildest dreams if he excels in it. Oil and gas is dead, if you think I am lying study an oil and gas course then leave Nigeria you will suffer for lack of opportunities. We are talking of electric cars, renewable energy infact the world is moving away from oil. ICT is the oil of the future and if Nigeria doesnt innovate we will start drinking our oil. Even here in Nigera, these IOCs would leave yoi to drink your oil. Thats why the middle easterners are now investing in tourism because they know in no distant time the oil dependent economy would crumble.

You're thinking too much bro, just continue your mechanical engineering. You can always do your programming along side And focus properly after graduation.

Electrical and electronics is the bomb. Abandon mechanical and choose computer immediately. Mechanical has the fewest opportunities. But if you hit in mechanical, no engineer will be richer than you.

I appreciate everyone's input and I'd like to thank the mods for moving this to the front page swiftly...

I want to stay in academics as I'm quite academical and also bridge between the industry and academics.

I had always considered the fact that I've always been affected if dive into computer science deeply while still being in mechE.

So, I thought, maybe I should just stay in computer science and not multitasking myself in doing both mechE and comp sci.

Who is lying to you?

Oil and gas beats anything in this country anyday anytime. You think you are in the US?

If he was in the US, Computer Science would definitely be better, but in the Nigeria, Engineering is far better.

The best developers here are those that manage the few large and inbetween projects that come along.

The rest are at Andela doing what?

Oil will still be king in this country for at least in the next 20 years.

In the long run in life, 1 or 2 years lost doesn't really matter.

If you believe you have the zeal to complete Mech Eng, then do that and thereafter do PGD/Masters in Computer or related field.
Else switch immediately to Computer.
As i said the few years lost will not matter much in the long run.

Good luck.

I'd love to move to Elect but due to some reasons, I wouldn't be doing that. Reason also being that I would stay extra 2yrs in school as compared to staying extra 1yr in comp science.

I'd always borrow courses from Elect to complement my comp science in the area of electronics and microcontrollers.

I simply thought I'd fight over my nonchalant attitude towards machines but I couldn't.

Finish and become an Engineer. Study computer science privately to help your skills as a Robotic Engineer. As a Computer Science graduate, you are never an Engineer except you study Computer Engineering.

I'm doing this to also stand a better chance in getting a fully funded scholarship with a first class to advance my studies abroad.
I'm not particularly thinking in the area of working for anyone.

you intend on doing co.sci in the US as MSc?

If landing in the US is your focus, then move asap.

don't worry is a matter of time. I hope you know even in your oyel and grass a computer scientist can work there. Even they have more opportunites there than Engineers. By the way an Engineer that is not a computer science maestro is that one a 21st century engineer.

If I had the zeal, I'd not be here looking for some pieces of advice.

I've continually asked myself what I'd specifically do with thermodynamics and fluid mechanics, not that I don't know them nor that I don't know the application areas, but the thing is that I'm not particularly interested in working in those areas.

Everytime, I think about doing something with computers and solving lots of maths and looking for ways to interpret maths in virtually everything I do.

Thanks bro, I'd make a move towards comp science then.

I think u should finish mechanical engineering
u can do computer science anywhere and anytime , infact u can even specialise instead of learning the the useless stuff of computer science. graduate with a first class or 2.1 in mechanical and also learn ICT and trust me u can't be jobless

and let me tell u what I've learnt having a degree in computer science is not that meaningful as in unlike other departments the employer does not care about ur degree it's just about whether u can do the job or not in fact I even heard a guy say his lecturer said that u can't get a job with a degree in computer science alone u have to specialise further

u can never hear an application for a computer scientist , the employers are always specific in their requests like software engineer, web designer etc

so finish mechanical and learn what u want to learn about ICT

I will say you should try and finish your mech and be taking professional/practical courses in computer science during your vacations or at any convenient time, because with good professional courses you can do well in cs since that is where your interest and strength is. But if you think it wouldnt work, you can go back and start computer science, but you will still need professional courses or practical classes to triumph well in cs. I wish you best as you follow your heart

f never switch any shit to computer science besides programming is what you can learn in six months and apply for a certificate.. I am a programmer back then my tutor told me that learning computer science is a waste of time I remember him telling me when he graduated he knew nothing about programming (Nigerian universities are the worst to learn cs) search for a thread name my regretful bsc I won't want you to regret after wasting four years I won't say much so I stop here

Computer Science and Statistics Computer are pure waste of time in Nigerian Universities.

I will say remain in Mechanical Engineering since that is where your foundation is. Robotics, Mechatronics, Control Systems are all options in Mechanical Engineering that your programming skills will make you to be a sought after. Besides, I will like to tell you almost all other aspects of Mechanical Engineering now require some knowledge of Machine Learning which you have a flare for. I can tell you that even with a 2.1 in Mechanical Engineering and your programming skills, you will make it either in Nigeria or abroad. You can send me a PM, I am in the same option of ME. However, know that Computer Science is really a hot cake outside Nigeria.
