Lemme clarify some things. Beorn is mixing things up because he doesn't know how they work.



In every story, there is a principal theme, then a secondary theme. The principal themes are consistent and drive the plot, whilst the secondaries are recurring, and subtle. The principal themes are the genres, whilst the secondaries are subgenres. Now, genres are loud, and clearly visible. Subgenres are silent and almost invisible - you won't see them unless you know they are there and you know what you're looking for.

For instance, How to Get Away With Murder has several overlapping genres, namely:, Legal drama, mystery, crime. Those genres are the themes that drive the plot/storylines, hence, every other secondary theme is unimportant, even if there is another genre somewhere in there. They are not important, and the show will not be judged and critique based on these silent genres, rather, they will be judged on the loud themes, namely; legal drama, crime, mystery. So to all intents and purposes, HTGAWM is a crime/Legal drama/mystery tv show.

Sci-fi doesn't always have to be futuristic, you know? Sometimes, it's occurring in the present, and the science and tech used are the ones we use today. We call these kind of movies and tv shows, contemporary science fictions.

Searching certainly qualifies as a contemporary sci-fi because lots of 21st century electronic gadgets were used, and collectively played the most important part in plot advancements, no?

Sometimes, there are silent genres attached to movies, and it's up to you to figure them out. For instance, the tv show, Mr. Robot , contains some element of cyberpunk, but is categorized as drama/thriller. However, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that it's also a sci-fi, because of the cyberpunk aspect.


Bottom line, there are things you've to figure out for yourself, but only when you know what you're looking for

ok , out of the 2 series and one movie listed i have only seen Mr robot extensively, and i an say from that redit post mr robot has elements of cyberpunk based on the following reasons

the setting, the themes etc these are stated in the reditt post , and also esmail's major influences on Mr robot comes from some heavily themed cyberpunk driven movies.

Good. I was half-expecting you to dispute the fact that the show is cyberpunk influenced. It's the subgenre though. The primary genres are crime, drama, thriller. The cyperpunk aspect is merely the underlying theme.

Imitation game's subgenre is techno-thriller, no? The term techno-thriller denotes a high tech thriller (typically military technology). and since enigma code qualifies as high tech, tell me why the film shouldn't be classified under a cyperpunk category? The underlying themes certain look cyberpunk to me.

Remember, it's the silent genre (subgenre), and different from the loud genres (genre) that were drama, biography and thriller, and shouldn't affect the film's general classification (different from subgenre classifications) in any way. I don't know if you understand the point I'm trying to make? Please, indicate if you do.
